This was a wonderful surprise treat to me. I came upon it on UA-cam this morning. I met Jonathan 15 years ago and thoroughly enjoy his insight. John Dear, wonderful event. Thank you!
This particular presentation here deserves the Nobel Peace prize for its all encompassing Truth.
Such an interesting and important presentation! Thank you Marie. It says a lot that I'm the first person commenting on this video and it's been up for 7 months. We Catholics have so much work to do in spreading the Good News that Pope Francis is presenting us through his faithfulness to the nonviolent Gospel message of Jesus the Christ.
Hello Father John. I saw you give a lecture at St. Joseph's College on Long Island in 2011 or 2012. Just wanted to say thank you for all you do.
Bravo! I had the good fortune of taking Prof. Nagler's class on nonviolence at Berkeley back in the 80s and it changed my life. Best and most important class I took in my four years there!
Thanks for your decades of witness to the nonviolent Jesus.
Loved it....Wonderful daughter of a great man!!!
Thank you for this. It was everything I needed to hear right now. 🌷

What an absolute lunatic.
John is sincere in all his peace efforts! But some of the characters (such as politicians etc...) he has to come into contact with are not!!! You can easily see some of this in the fact that he has been arrested over 85times for protesting against nuclear weapons/war!!! He has evidently been censored completely regarding the Israel-Hamas war since last October 7th 2023, but he wrote and spoke against the US supplying weapons to Israel for years previous to then. He was in Israel in 1982 and witnessed the planes flying over his head on their way to invade Lebanon, in which he said the US shared responsibility for killing 60,000 of their people with US weapons. This was when he first determined to become a peace activist! He was friends with Desmond Tutu who was welcomed in Palestine by the people of Palestine!

I would like to share a few paragraphs with you from A Course of Love, received by Mari Peron which I just read: 16.8 What happens when feelings of loneliness or despair, anger or grief join with the spacious Self? This joining occurs only through acceptance. Without acceptance, the separation remains along with the physical manifestation. 16.9 It is only in the present that acceptance can occur. There is no “going back” or reliving of the past required. There is also no escape, however, because in Christ-consciousness, you must become fully aware of the present. The present is the time of no time, wholeness, where all that is real and all that was ever real exists. While the physical manifestations of all that you feared and expelled were not real because they were projections rather than creations, the feelings were real because you felt them. Had you not feared and expelled them, you would have seen that they were nothing to fear. 16.10 You have no feelings that are bad. Fear is not a feeling but a response to a feeling. Emotions are responses. You have been told there are but two emotions, love and fear. What this is really saying is that there are but two ways to respond to what you feel-with love or with fear. If you respond with fear you expel, project, and separate. If you respond with love you remain whole. You realize that you have no feelings that are bad. You embrace sadness, grief, anger, and all else that you feel because these feelings are part of who you are in the present moment. When you remain in the present moment you remain within Christ-consciousness where all that is exists in harmony. To embrace is the opposite of to escape. To hold all within yourself in the embrace of love is the opposite of holding onto what you have already responded to with fear and made separate. There is no escape for there is only the embrace. The embrace is Christ-consciousness. From Day 16, Paradise Re-Found, A Course of Love, Mari Peron. 🙂❤
We know Jesus taught us not to judge by human appearances. Who are we all really (thanks to God) according to the early Christian writers after the authors of Scripture? Who in us believes in himself "I am Christ" when we believe it? "This is the work in which we may be doing the works of Christ, for even our very believing in Christ is the work of Christ. It is this He works in us, not certainly without us.” ~St. Augustine, Homilies on John, Tractate 71 (John 14:10-14) "I will restore you to yourself, when I shall have restored you unto Me." ~St. Augustine, Sermon 73 on the New Testament "He rightly returns to himself, because he departed from himself. For he who returns to God restores himself to himself, and he who departs from Christ rejects himself from himself." ~St. Ambrose, Catena Aurea, Luke 15:17 "What a joy for those who, after they have suffered for the love of God, know themselves in possession of an ineffably reward, which is no other than God Himself." ~St. Augustine "Blessed be God, for so bountifully providing for us that He even bestows on us His very Self." ~St. John of Avila, Finding Confidence in Times of Trial. "What God seeks, he being himself God by nature, is to make us gods through participation, just as fire converts all things into fire." ~St. John of the Cross, Sayings of Light and Love, #107. "Accordingly, souls possess the same goods by participation that the Son possesses by nature. As a result they are truly gods by participation, equals and companions of God." ~St. John of the Cross, Spiritual Canticles. Stanza 39. More: Wikipedia: "Divinization (Christian)" 😊❤
PURE LOVE is a PERSON. he is not both promoter of Lif and Destroyer.
In the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible a ftnte for Mt 5:38 makes a few references to Old Testament Scripture, the first one being Exodus 21:24, and the ftnte says that Jesus was forbidding the misuse of Mosaic Civil Law to justify private vengeance!!! (compare today's Israel killing over 35,000 Palestinian civilians, with 10,000 still missing under the rubble, in retaliation for Hamas killing 1,200 and still holding over 100 Israelis hostage, while Israel is holding about 9,000 Palestinians hostage in their prisons where even children are tried as an adult without representation through a corrupt trial without mercy!!! ). The ftnte says that Exodus 21:24 was meant to limit retribution; it was never an invitation to inflict punishment for personal injuries or extend personal vengeance beyond the injury suffered ( cf. Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21 ). The punishment had to fit the crime but not exceed it. Jesus eliminates such a policy of retaliation from personal life. ( cf New Testament Romans 12:17 ).
John around 30mins starts talking about Vss 37-38 from gospel of Matthew that Tolstoy spent the rest of his life trying to draw peoples attention to. Ghandi decided to take Tolstoy up on it and he read it and decided Jesus meant for everyone who understood it to apply it, and not just think of it metaphorically. Then Ghandi began his non-violent campaign and based his entire campaign on Jesus's Sermon on the Mount and the application of Matthew 5:38 regarding not reviling or not retaliating.
I know that John has a lot of compassionate feelings for the people of Palestine, and I do also, but I find it difficult not to have bad thoughts about those who are slaughtering them, inxluding all of us here in the USA, albeit indirectly, but it shocks the senses! Also I have my own personal reasons for defense against Zionist Jews and those who assist them in persecution of the labeled mentally ill, as they have never stopped conducting a hate campaign of malice/gaslighting of me for 50yrs now!!!!!!!!!! But just as they make up their own acceptance of themselves by God, I say that Jesus Christ the True One has accepted me and seperated me from them!!!
I did find it interesting (maybe funny?), the way John said that Paul never read the Sermon on the Mount.
Wonderful, John. I am enjoying reading your book the gospels of peace. I am a pacifist Christian, born Catholic but nondeminational since I was 17 years old, 50 years ago. I am just a follower of Jesus of Nazareth who always meant Divine Love and non-violence to me. Therefore, so is the Divine Loving Creator. They can hurt no one. They only Love us to Heaven. Personally, I see the cloak exchange for a sword, to mean Jesus saying, no longer worry about protecting the outer flesh, but exchange the outer 'cloak' protection , for the inner protection of your Souls by holding onto the sword of Truth and the Way of Divine Love that you must now have that I have given you. The same sword He mentions that He brings that will divide. May the pure untainted Love of the Divine Loving Creator and Jesus guide us all to become Spiritual children of the Divine Loving Creator. The Genesis account of Adam and Eve and the Garden seems clear that originally Adam and Eve and the animals were all vegetarians, and none of them had anything to fear from each other!!! Only after the fall did the knowledge of fear and violence start manifesting in all of them! Then God introduced us to jealousy when He showed what could happen if He approved of eating meat!!!!! Abel likely slaughtered an animal in a humane way and after cooking certain pieces, he offered it to God in the way of a sacrifice (the first sacrifice mentioned in the Scriptures), while his brother Cain offered fruit to God. But God was more pleased with Abel's sacrifice, noting the pleasing odor of the meat roasting like a barbeque, and Cain became so jealous and angry that he killed Abel over this!!! Before Cain killed Abel, however, God shows the reader from the beginning of Bible history that He knows every possible case scenario that can occur and He might let occur, by letting Cain know that He understands his jealousy and knows that it is leading to his killing his brother Abel. He tells Cain that he has not been acting rightly, and so disclosing that His choosing of Abel over Cain was not about what was offered, but the bad heart condition that Cain had developed regarding Abel. Cain did not listen to God despite His commanding Voice Presence!!! (Which is how we know we have free will). This is all recorded in Genesis 4:1-16 and becomes a first lesson in how violence only begets more violence, after Cain acknowledges that he killed his brother, God puts a mark on Cain that anyone who kills Cain, God will avenge and kill him or God will avenge Cain seven times¿??????? Jesus Christ is actually including all of this in his talk about how wicked reasonings come from out of the heart. (Mt 15:10-20; Luke 6:45).
I was all relaxed & ready for a healing message from Dr. Finley, and the whole thing was interrupted by an ad to fight toe fungus!
I am wondering what ancient writings that John is saying around 25mins translates the Greek word for Hemp the way that leads to the interpretation of Jesus in the Temple the way that John has described here???
I am not the only person in the USA who does not view the Black peoples movement to be of primary importance as it was in the past. Some of the Black leaders have sold their poorer population out big time, and it is insulting their trying to make people feel guilty for not supporting them, when they are imitating the campaign of Jews in labeling everyone who refuses to support them 100% as anti-semitic. Some Black leaders have obtained unequal power, prestige, and their banking systems now, funneling money for things such as arms for Israel, becoming a modern day mafia for them, and would probably make MLK Jr sick. These leaders are part of the NWO (New World Order), and their vanity (as king Solomon would say), is nothing more than all the other world leaders have accomplished in bringing about world destruction!!!
Starting at 1:12...... I am wondering exactly what Frank means by, they are killing people with armed drone warfare on the south side of Des Moines Iowa? Frank makes a horrified face but no context to support such a claim other than it is in the mission statement?
Wonderful to hear a follower of Jesus who understands what Jesus actually taught and meant. I am a pacifist Christian in Melbourne Australia and there are very few pacifist Christians here. Jesus warned followers when He said, "you call me Lord, Lord but do not do what I say to do." Jesus talked about Spirit over flesh. Heaven is a Spiritual world. We must awaken or arise into and become our True identity as Spiritual children of a Divine Loving Creator. Our faith in God, Jesus and Heaven helps us overcome every material challenge we will ever face in the flesh, even the death of the body experience at the end of our journey. We let go of all material securities and hold onto Spiritual securities. God bless. Christopher.
I agree that there are bad actors in the Christian community as with all communities. There are bad actors in the Christian community, the Muslim community, the Jewish community, the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, the LQBTQ community, Nationalist communities, fundamentalist communities, etc, etc, etc. I think it is pretty clear that Jesus taught non violence and every Christian person I have met agrees (not saying every Christian agrees, just the ones thatI have met). Love God and love thy neighbor....doesnt get much simpler than that. I feel like the bad actors in any community tend to be the loudest and most outspoken (and if those people have large sums of money that can cause great damage). We can't condemn or judge entire groups of people in a negative light because of a small portion of extremists.
The Jesuit Society has restuctured itself so much after Vatican ll that many of the Traditionalists side of the Church have said that they do not comsider them to even be 'Catholic" anymore!
Thank you for your deep discussion of Therese of Lisieux. Looking forward to reading this book on her
Sometimes the soundtrack is compromised. But with the transcript it can be figured out. Unless you know John's teachings, you will know what he is saying!!!
Moses is described in Scripture as "the meekest man on earth".
Hi, John, It is a whole year since I was with you through these Lent videos last year! I also have the New American Bible. Mine is the St Joseph Edition and it is also the 1986 Edition, although this translation was approved in November 2008 and September 2010 - I also have the New Testament Ignatius Catholic Study Bible. Named after the founder of your Jesuits!!!
Inspirational! Will be listening to this again and again!
If the USA starts coming under attack because of the Arab world triggering off an onslaught of feelings of offense against us from all over the world, then many people will not be able to be sitting pondering the things Br Quenon is saying, and he has indicated how fortunate we are. Many people from all over the world such as many in Ukraine and Russia now are too consumed with surviving war to think about peace in the way that John Dear has been preaching/promoting/teaching. And many of them would never consider it anyways, even when they had the chance to, before war truly hit them personally in their own flesh!!! Many of them enjoyed playing violent video games of war games, and encouraged their children to play them also!!! Those games are big sellers, but peace preached this way is not!!! John Dear did tell it just as it truly is at the start of this video, that there is no true peace anywhere in this world. Islam has invented a Jesus for themselves who is in subjection to their God Allah, and therefore he has to fight violently for them according to their rules!!! So, now they have a Jesus to blame for their violent behavior!!!
Hallelujah! ❤☮️ I’m a Quaker and I’m glad to hear you teach the truth that Jesus actively practiced and taught us to love one another and live in non violence. I pray this message goes out far and wide. Much gratitude.
Thank you. Cornel West is wonderful. We love our enemies because we ARE them. God is ONE. We and our enemies are one IN God according to the Western view; and according to the Eastern view, we and our enemies ARE God, at the deepest level of truth. There is really not much difference between the two. We ARE our enemies. If we hate them, we hate ourselves.
This talk helped. me so much. One of Jim's best. Thank you Jim for continuing to share your wisdom...I've known you for many years and your teaching helps me understand that I am understood. WOW BLESSINGS ❤
I agree with this wholeheartedly. Gentle and humble in heart, our beloved Jesus. We cannot serve two masters. We follow Jesus or we do not. It is not easy to practice non violence in a violent world. It is the only way to seek justice without perpetuating further injustice. Thank you for your offering on this. 🕊❤️🩹🪔🙏🏻🌻

Thanks to Sharon for her encouraging notes from Dorothy Day. I went by the Haley House in Boston about two years ago and there was a commemorative sign outside, noting the time Dorothy had been there, but I happened to walk by it just yesterday, and the sign was gone! I knew it would be! I had no reason to be walking around there, but felt both Jesus and Dorothy guided me to go take a look and see that the sign was no longer there, which was a sign in itself!
thank you !
@10:00 West distinction between joy and pleasure and that Joy is the fruit of love, that was wonderful. It is helpful to see Joy as the fruit of the kingdom of heaven and pleasure as the fruit of the flesh. How many of us indulge in pleasure as we try to find joy?
Thank you both so much, Jim Finley and John Dear. For me this video was like a gardener, clearing away the underbrush and weeds that had obscured a beautiful well.

I think Dorothy Day was right that things were worse by 1980. Every organization in existence was compromised from the already imperfect way they were through the 60s.
It is good to look at the positive first, but I don't let myself be mesmerized by the gloss on the surface. John Dear, David, and Frank are proper to speak of commitment to the Lord Jesus first. October 4th is Feast Day of St Francis.
