First of all, thank you, sincerely for watching, subscribing and sharing your opinion. Nobody can rightly ravage you for lovinga 991.2, specially one you owned and lost. As I said in the very first sentence of the video, all 911s are awesome, and if Porsche only made one, it would be fantastic and we would all love it. My judgment is based on the definition of a traditional sports car. There are plenty of air cooled 911 owners who think any water cooled 911 is too big, too soft and not a real 911. That’s OK, it’s their opinion and there’s a 911 for them for sure. I’m about to turn 59 and my opinion reflects my life experiences and the cars I grew up with. For me, a 911 looks like the impact bumper era, air cooled models of the 80’s. That has always been a 911 to me. I am fortunate to be able to drive my dream car, which is this 2011 911 Carrera GTS. If I wanted an air cooled 911, 964 or 993 I would have that instead. They are not as good as a daily driver because they lack safety, comfort, and other features that the 997 has. And they are painfully inadequate on track. As for the 991 and 992, they just feel too big and civilized to me. I feel, and I am far from alone on this, that they have transitioned into luxury GT cars. Again, nothing wrong with that, just not, as close to an ideal 911 in my view. I will say, it surprises me how many people agree with you that the 992 is far too big, but the 991 is not. They are essentially the same platform with styling changes, similar to how the 997 and 996 are essentially the same basic platform. Lastly, I think that since the 992 has crossed over into the GT car class, the Turbo and Turbo S versions are the best new 911. Too big to be sports cars, but I would take one over an Aston Martin, Bentley or Mercedes coupe any day of the week. Again, thank you for watching. I hear you and the criticisms you had of your 997 are certainly legitimate. They are older cars, and I guess those of us who prefer them, consider that part of their character or charm. @@GTSCarLife Your GTS is a beautiful car! Love the black leather interior. I do love my 2009 Carrera S, and I think it is a gorgeous car, so fun to drive, and it has been super reliable. I've taken it on several 500+ mile road trips, and it is so fun doing things like that. I think any 911 is so hard to criticize and it just boils down to nitpicking at that point! They are all so special and wonderful to drive. I think that is the best thing about Porsche. We are all so passionate about our cars, and they have done such a good job over the last half a century in giving each of us something we love. I love seeing any 911 whether its a brand new Turbo S or a 2001 Carrera with 100,000 miles, each of those cars would thrill me the same to talk to their owners and sit in it for a ride. As different as they are, I also love how very similar they are too. You can look at every 911 and know instantly it belongs to that family. Most other brands can't really say the same, at least not to the same degree. Thanks for the reply and great video!

Well first of all, thank you for watching, subscribing and commenting on my videos. I appreciate your support. I literally just came in from checking tire pressures in the garage, and sat down to reply to your questions. The most important news to share from my perspective, is that we are now less than 4 months out from 2 years since we took delivery at Porsche Experience Center, Atlanta and made the 1,302 mile journey home in January 2023. The Taycan has still not had one single failure which required any visit to the dealer, nor have we spent a single dollar on maintenance. Obviously all new cars incorporate a truly significant amount of software, and sometimes it amazes me that these car companies are able to make these things work at all, considering how many times I have to reboot my Apple iMac or iPhone. And there have been grand failures, the truly awful Fisker, all early Teslas and some early Lucid models among them. Even the early Taycans had their fair share of software glitches (maybe more than their share?) but the dealers I spoke with all told me that the cars were mechanically very sound, typically Porsche and that it was just a matter of making the software right. That is a superior position to be in to those of people who own cars, and yes I'm looking at you Tesla, where the mechanical bits and quality are lacking. Software can be fixed rather easily, but shoddy materials, fit, finish and build quality last the life of the vehicle. Because ours is a 2023, we were able to avoid the "excitement" of software issues that earlier purchasers had to endure, and I'm very happy about that because I understand how a few bad experiences can be enough to sour someone on the entire vehicle. As for your comment regarding range, in our experience (and I've seen similar reports all across the Internet) we see up to 311 miles of range at 100% charge, which we rarely charge to, and 248 miles routinely at 80% charge. The range of the Taycan is actually quite good, and has been increased further for the 2025 model. I just purchased my 7th Porsche, a 2011 987.2 Cayman S for my son, which I will be releasing a video on soon, and I am reminded how well Porsche engineers and constructs their vehicles, from our 40 year old 944 which just moved to it's new owner to make garage space for the Cayman, to our 2023 Taycan 4S Cross Turismo. And yes, of all the cars I have ever had the pleasure to own and or drive, this Taycan remains the most exciting car to drive that we've ever experienced. In my opinion, a CPO model from a reputable Porsche dealer is a great way to go. Please update me on what you end up getting!

I also daily my 2011 997.2 GTS coupe with PDK and track it frequently. To answer your question, it really depends on what YOU want from your car. For simple, pure driving around town, either as a daily or a Sunday cruiser, the Carrera S manual is more than enough 911, will cost a ton less these days (the 997.2 gen GTS is going crazy now - there is one on BaT right now that will probably set the new record, surpassing the $166,000 set by a Macadamia Brown GTS a few months ago. This black GTS is already at $150,000 with several days to go) My 2003 Carrera was a base manual and it remains one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. But for me, I fell in love with the idea that the GTS was the final, best version of the 997 generation, and I wanted to own the best. Also, as someone who is on track frequently, PDK is vastly superior for accomplishing fast lap times. The F1 racers aren't using manuals, they are racing with a PDK style transmission, so any conversation that mocks people with PDK is silly. Tell Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso that they aren't real men because they dont drive an old school manual! If budget is a factor, or if you will never rack your ar and just want the finest generation of 911 ever made, buy the Carrera S manual. You will have no regrets. Let me know where you end up!

I am leaning to the GTS and only considering the S because it is manual. I like that the GTS is more rare, was made in limited numbers, the wider body, more hp. I think the GTS is where I will go. I’m glad you like your interior. It’s well documented that the switches, leathers, plastics and painted surfaces in the 996 are not as durable as those on the 993, or the 997 that replaced it. I also owned a 996 which is the car in the video, and also a 997 and the 997 materials are definitely of higher quality. But the 996 is a fantastic 911 and is even more fun to drive than the models that followed it. Thanks for watching, subscribing and commenting!

You’re never too young to email. I used to write letters and send them out snail mail. Sometimes I got responses. I assume you’re accomplished at karting? Verstappen and Norris signed their F1 development deals very young, as early as age 15 or 16. So at 11 if you have video of your karting accomplishments, by all means share them online! The best way to work into a racing career at your age is to demonstrate you are faster around the tracks than the other guys and to put together small businesses that will sponsor your racing in exchange for awareness and recognition. I said the last thing In want to do is fill my tire with fix a flat gunk. I stand by that. It makes a mess of your valve stem, wheels, everything. I carry a plug kit because if I need to repair a flat on my own, I simply plug the hole and use the factory supplied compressor to fill it back up. Presto. @@GTSCarLife If the nail is closer to the outside of the tire, we can see it, a plug kit can be used; but most of the times it is impossible to use a plug kit without first removing the wheel(s). Do you also keep a car jack for lifting the car to remove the wheel(s)? Which brand plug kit are you using for your tires?

@@ClarkIsraeli For front tires, just turn the steering wheel and you can see and access. For rear, just move the car forward or back a bit until you see it from the rear. There is plenty of space to work if you need to.

All true. Each new generation of Porsche can be counted on to be faster, stick better and brake shorter. And cost more! So had this been a comparison on performance, the results would have been flipped. But the question was, which 911 is the best sports car, the best 911. The newer generations, starting with the 991 have transformed more into luxury sports coupes and lost the traditional sports car characteristics. This week, the head of Porsche design himself admitted the 911 has gotten too big and he wants to figure out how to make them smaller again. NASA. Join NASA for an HPDE1 track day event. NASA is a sanctioning body and runs at tracks nationwide so you can grow with them and you won’t likely outgrow them anytime soon. You’ll work your way up through HPDE 1,2,3 and 4, then into TimeTrial and then earn your Competition License through them. Local tracks include MSRC, Hallet, COTA and MSRH. From there you’ll be able to enter races with them and a host of other sanctioning bodies nationwide. The sooner you start, the faster you’ll get there! I believe you made the right decision- the 997.2 was the final, best evolution of what I, and many professionals and enthusiasts alike- believe to be the greatest generation of 911 ever. As for your 2 Caymans, they too are fantastic sports cars, livelier and in some ways even more fun to drive. I assume your other Cayman was a 987? @@GTSCarLife Thank you, my 1st Cayman was a fun 2008 base Gen1. Was scared of the engine so traded up to a 2014 gen2. I actually enjoyed the 08 without bell & whistles more than the 2014 (fully loaded), and yes with electric emergency brake... Looking forward to seeing the video on your Cayman.

This is awsome! My friend and I were never car guys but got into Motorsport about a year ago. We’re now trying to learn everything we can and get into spec Miata! Any tips? (We’re both going to go through basic and advanced auto mechanic school in our area to try and help with some repair costs)

@@mike617 Thank you for watching and for your comments! Spec Miata racing is excellent and one of the most finest and competitive single series race classes in the world. Also, Miata are very reliable, and easy and inexpensive to keep running. A truly great and popular series. There are plenty of shops that service these cars at races and also rent the cars out for races, so you should have no difficulty gaining access. I think it is smart that you and your friend are learning how to work on the cars yourselves. That will of course save you a lot of money, but also will make you better and faster drivers since you will understand the mechanical connection. I would encourage you to find a NASA race weekend near you and go watch the races yourself, talk to the drivers and their crew. You will not only gain excitement (as if you need it!) but also you'll find the guys (and girls) are very happy to show you around and share their experiences and knowledge with you. But I thought that your vid was pretty much spot on, so keep it up! 👍 I'm in the North East, so I try to hit up all of the big tracks here, WGI, LRP, NJMP, Palmer and some others, and typically just instruct at HPDEs with FCA, BMW, PCA, SCDA, and some other clubs. I mean, going back to my post, it even costs me over $5k a year in tires, brakes, gas, hotels, etc. despite having the events free. Moreover, a Nico Rosberg vid was recommended to me after you, and he said that a top tier 12 year old Go-Karting season in Europe costs in excess of $250k Euros....Crazy!

@dvas2686 I am from the D.C. area originally. Lots of great tracks in the east. We have one up north from DFW in Jennings, OK called Hallet that reminds me of the vintage eastern tracks. The main straight flys right past a restaurant. Definitely one of my favorites. I watch Nico as well, he’s a fun guy. And I hear he once beat Lewis Hamilton on track in equal machinery 😎 Like anything, if you want it bad enough you can find a way. It’s been done. And if you have deep pockets, then yes, it’s easy to spend a lot. But getting a license is pretty easy. What you do with it depends on the individual and of course a little luck. @@GTSCarLife Agreed, if you want it bad enough, it can be done. I have many friends who started as HPDE students, graduated to Instructing and have now been club racing Spec Miatas, E46 M3s, etc. A close friend, through sheer determination, went from HPDEs in his late teens, to Club Racing, to winning an AER Championship, to getting a drive in IMSA for a year. Another close friend - who was lucky, and more importantly talented enough - to go through Skip Barber at 16, race against Danica Patrick and AJ Allmendinger in the Junior series, and get a test in Indy/Cart. It's also helpful to point out that beyond spec racing, club racing, SCCA, and the wide range of semi-pro and professional racing series, there's also other opportunities to get wheel to wheel. There's also go-karting, Lemons and other lower cost categories. Finally, there is an option to rent a seat with an established team and be one of multiple drivers per car, in something like AER. And assuming, you don't crash, it's a low commitment option where you can do a race here or there and not have to buy and maintain your own car and do a full year. So, for sure, where there's a (very strong) will, and (hopefully lots of your own, family, or others) money, there is a way to make it happen. Thanks for the offer at COTA. It's certainly on my bucket list but a long drive without currently having a trailer. In the meantime, let me know if you're ever in the North East, especially at Lime Rock, which is really my home!

You don't like the outcome, so your automatic go-to is to accuse the person of saying it with being something. How is that working for you in life? I can afford to own and drive any 911 I want. I chose the best one for my use - a street model with track chops, that is still small enough to feel like a sports car instead of a personal luxury coupe. If the 991 or 992 came out better, I would have that instead. As I literally say in my opening line, all 911s are awesome, but only one can be considered the best. The market and my fellow automotive experts and journalists agree the 997 is the greatest generation, whether you understand that or not. Have a great day!

@@GTSCarLife ‘the best’ for a guy that spends his days often on the track. That is my issue with this review. Most people drive exclusively on the street, and then your conclusion is way off in my opinion.

@Lecruque Ok, fair enough. But most of the areas where I found fault with the 991 affect it in daily driving use and traditional sports car feel. The 991, as I stated, is actually superior on track. Each new generation of Porsche 911 always improves on performance and track times.

@GTSCarLife the 991.2 is the perfect blend of tech and analog for me with plenty of power that can easily be tuned up >500hp if so desired. There are other reasons too, including size, looks imo, view of hood near dash, razor, lower grade materials imo, etc.

@@GTSCarLife l do live in northern Bavaria close to Würzburg. My 997 is black with bicolor leather in beige/black. Bought it with 37000km on its clock, now we are at 92000 something. In the first 10 years nearly nothing went wrong, after visiting the Nürburgring Nordschleife last year it is slightly annoyed (small clutch problem and a cooling leak lately)

@oliverpfister3972 So we are from the same part of the world! Two-tone leather is super rare. Sounds like a beautiful 911. Don’t worry about the service it needs now. Preventative maintenance is expected on all cars and your 997 is no different. Get the major service completed and you’ll be good for another 90,000. The track doesn’t harm them at all, just makes you go through tires and brakes more frequently. I’m at Circuit of The Americas right now and I’m on track here 10 times a year. I have 72,000 miles now and she runs like new. Cheers!

@@GTSCarLife Have fun on the track! The 2 problems he has had are solved and just cost me 600€. The next service is scheduled to be in September. The Nordschleife is a different beast: one lap is 20.8km long, you got different tarmac and it goes up and down a lot not just left and right. For my laps in 2024 l am going with a track ready rental l think..

Not quite. But several million and it’s incredible. I was fortunate to be able to go for a ride in it later that day for a few laps at speed on Circuit of The Americas. The sound was like nothing else.

First, thanks for watching, subscribing and chiming in. As for your question, do you not want to drive a stick? I will say that the manual is much more engaging for pleasure driving. But for traffic or track use, the PDK is superior. Tiptronic is very reliable but would only be an advantage in stop and go traffic. Having said that, if you are going to buy an automatic anyway, at least you’ll also be able to enjoy driving a 911 instead of something less fun. Let me know what you decide!

Thanks for watching. As I started the video with, any 911 is a great car and if there was only one, we would all love it. But the 997 really is the high mark in the history of Porsche’s famous, now 60 year old sports car. And yes, the market agrees which is even more meaningful than my opinion. I now have over 71,000 miles on my 997.2 GTS so obviously I am not driving to preserve my cars value. But I do believe the 997 and especially the 997.2 which is mechanically superior and also was built in significantly lower numbers, will only increase in value from this point. I ordered a 2015 Macan S loaded with a $75,000 sticker back in March 2014. It was indeed incredible and even embarrassed some respected high end sports cars on track. But I missed the sounds of an engine behind me and I never got past the feeling that the cars abilities were all from electronics wizardry. But yes, very impressive what Porsche can do! Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts. My previous 911 was a 2003 996.2 C2 manual. I loved that car and drove over 95,000 miles. For daily driving the 996 was even more fun because the M96 motor just sounds so good and the chassis feels lighter. Aside from some style and materials upgrades, your 996 is really all we need and definitely a keeper. I will say on track, my GTS is worlds better. And as an instructor , I track often. But if you don’t, the 996 is perfect!

First of all, congratulations on being disciplined and working towards your goal. Few feelings in the world better than setting goals and working hard to achieve them. As for the scarcity of 997.2, yes. Porsche made very few in the first place because the timing coincided with the great global recession. So few made to start and the ones that are for sale often times have been modded or wrecked or both. All very bad for desirability and value. But the sellers know how strong the demand is for them, so they will still ask top dollar. As for interior color, black is so boring but the most desirable choice simply because it wears well and hides blemishes. And yes, PDK was the shiny new toy so more than half of buyers chose it. I have always owned manuals and would never buy an “automatic“ sports car. But when my wife finally allowed me to replace my 2003 996.2 manual with a 997.2 GTS, which I wanted from the moment it was first introduced, I too struggled with finding my perfect example. So I settled for PDK and got most of the other features that mattered to me. I just bought my son a 2011 987.2 S with the 6-speed manual, and driving it has served to remind me how much more fun and involving a manual truly is. But I do spend a lot of time on track and PDK is definitely better on track, so I just enjoy my car and focus on how much I love it. You will find your car. Use AutoTempest, PCA classifieds and use the Porsche pre-owned website DAILY. Best of luck in your search and please let me know when you achieve your goal! It was very quick and rated the best handling car in America by Car and Driver when it was new. Today it is still very well built and gives so much pleasure with its quality and beautiful styling. But yes, a Tesla Model 3 will blow it away from a stoplight.

I’ve seen some nicely done examples. But I’m too much of a purist for that! Can’t imagine a Chevy engine (even the admittedly amazing LS) in a Porsche! 🙈

It also costs a fraction of your 930, and has the same seats! 😂 We just picked up our 7th Porsche 2 weeks ago. It’s fun being able to experience the different versions of these world class sports cars!

Thanks for watching. You are entitled to have your opinion. But if you actually think this through, it would make no sense for me to just be biased and what, make an entire channel and do various road tests to what, further a bias? No. I just bought my 7th Porsche last week. I can own whichever cars I determine to be best. I am fortunate that I have the opportunity to drive and ride in some of the finest sports and GT cars in the world, usually on a Formula 1 track, and so from my extensive experience I have drawn certain conclusions. As I stated at the very beginning of this review, the point of this comparison was to compare and find out which 911 delivers the better sports car experience. Sports car. Not track monster. The 911 that delivers the better sports car experience. Because really, that is what the 911 has represented for 60 years now. The epitome of a sports car. Sure, some, including mine, also get tracked and some even race, but foremost a Porsche 911 is designed to provide owners with a traditional sports car experience, rear engine placement and all. And by that measure, the 997 generation is in fact the best 911. And the market agrees. Thanks for subscribing and sharing your view!

I think there is a bias created just by owning and just really liking your 997, and there is nothing wrong with that, but nevertheless a bias develops. I disagree that the 997 is a better sports car experience, maybe a more raw experience, that's for sure, the further you go back the more raw it becomes. The reason why I see a bias is because alot of the comments you made about the 991 vs 997 are opinions but you discuss them as if they are a matter of fact

@shaunonig1979 Sports car feel is subjective. Quoting 0-60 and skid pad numbers does not factor into which model is more true to the original sports car intent. Believe me, if I saw the 991 or 992 as the better sports car, I would have ordered one. I find it interesting that you have the Turbo, the GT cruiser version of the 997 and the GT3, the track weapon of the 991. Cheers.

I agree with you. But the 997 series is just classic. The new models are appealing to an entirely different buyer. IMHO

@davidmaynard3215 Indeed the newer cars have lost favor with sports car buyers and appeal to people who are more focused on buying a lifestyle and being able to tell people they “own a Porsch”. Different cars for a larger and more profitable market.

On performance and quality alone! Add in reliability and how well a 911 holds its value, and the 992 Turbo S makes a compelling argument that’s hard to ignore. Thank you for watching, subscribing and chiming in with your thoughts!

Now and then some viewer (who obviously owns a 991) will accuse me of being “biased” because I own a 997.2. They don’t bother to consider that it’s actually the reverse. I can own any 911 I want. And I’ve driven most of them. I choose to own and keep a 997.2 GTS because in my experience, it is the best 911 for my needs, which is a sports car that feels and drives like a sports car, serves as my daily driver and is also competitive on track.
