Also, for those who don't know me, my name is Austin, and this is my channel, Want of Wonder.
Want of Wonder features video essays from a Christian perspective mostly concerned with the humanities. I am an autodidact who loves to learn, and want of wonder is an outlet for me to share what I'm learning with others. It is my desire to highlight and contemplate the excess of wonder to be found in the beautiful, good, and true that is richly abundant in art, history, philosophy, theology, and culture. Subjects that I believe ultimately point us to God.
My plan is to upload a video once or twice a month as my schedule allows.
If you find the information and perspective compelling please like and subscribe and share the video with others to help me get this thing off the ground, and get this out to as many people as possible.

The Crisis of the Modern World
Переглядів 69410 місяців тому
In this video I look at some of the main critiques of modernism found in Rene Guenon's Crisis of the Modern World. Specifically focusing in on the idea of progress that is so prevalent in our modern world and the way it affects our spirituality. I touch on a wide range of topics. General tropes for those who are familiar with writings that critique modernism. Progress, Authenticity, Individuali...

Herodotus, history, and humility. In this video I go over a few of the tales from The Histories, a work written by "The Father of History", Herodotus around 430 BC, and I examine also why history is important to us more generally. I hope you all enjoy it! If you sit through the whole thing, please leave a comment letting me know what you think! 0:00 Intro 0:10 Who is Herodotus? 5:38 Candaules, ...
Excellent video, listening I was stunned it had under a thousand views
Thanks for listening!
The Sufi path is the only path left, as you well know Guenon asserted. Christianity was misguided, and has run its course as a result. Islam too, is being choked my modernity, but better to focus on the yet living than the dead
Thank you.
As i was watching this video I glanced to see how many subscribers you had and I didn't know how small of a channel this is! Very high quality video, man!
Thanks!
Death is love.
Jesus Christ died because he's a Man, everything will die. i love you death the true saviour of man.
This music makes you feel like you are in a Russian orthodox church, which is great considering you're talking about Tolstoy
That's what I thought!
Special pleading, through subtle manipulation and herding, you commit the usual Christian vice, of ushering God in through the kitchen door...Very slippery!
No subtlety here or herding, just my sincere thoughts. If you consider the history of the western tradition it is more apropos to claim what you are saying of secularism, but I appreciate the feedback. Thank you.
Then you haven't understood the argument levelled against you. Also by putting what people have to say and reason into some 'ism' in this case, Secularism, is another slippery device to control the argument. You are deceptive, in that you want to use ideas of logic and reason to then make a sudden introduction of your unverified beliefs (through the back door), knowing that this was your aim at the beginning. Just be honest and declare your faith, rather than using reason and logic in a twisted way. On the one hand you betray your hidden proselytising, and on the other you show contempt for proper reasoning and a search for truth.
Yeah, not buying it.
As long as there is capitalism, tradition will always be liquidated. Tradition is not intelligence, it is spirit, it is love and community -it is subservience to a common ideal, a resolute faith. Capital only valorizes intelligence, and that too, productive intelligence; all other forms of knowledge are pushed aside. Great video!
Great video man u deserve more views and subscribers.
I appreciate that! Thank you.
Great video.
Thanks!
Foe the gods of algorithm.....this is a good video.
Thank you!
Great video. Keep going, maybe you’ll conquer death.
Thank you!
U got another channel or is there some other very intelligent young man with your voice?-- haven’t watched the video yet but it sounds like I won’t be disappointed. 🤨 keep it up!
Thank you!
Love the video man
Thanks, bro.
I find the philosophy about death so interesting, its cool to find someone else's thoughts
I also find it fascinating! Thanks for listening.
For real man you are great keep it up❤
Thanks! I will!
Another awesome video! Keep up the great work, you work is some of my favorite to watch. It always helps to remind me of what’s important in my life. The perils of life are constantly swirling around me, and Jesus Christ is the only lasting source of hope and comfort. The more I focus my life on Him and His teachings, the less worried I am about myself.
Amen, brother. Thank you. I appreciate the support. It means a lot.
Love the video!! There are many things that faith can be placed in, but Jesus Christ is the only one that we can rely on without hesitation. The lyrics of a song by King Crimson came to mind as I was watching your video: Death seed blind man’s greed Poet’s starving children bleed Nothing he’s got he really needs 21st Century Schizoid Man We are reaping the fruits of people placing their faith in material things. Sadness and the lack of motivation.
Which version of Jesus Christ?
Thanks, brother. I completely agree, and that's a great song!
Great video man! Thoughts on Eastern Orthodoxy?
Thanks! I have lots of thoughts on Orthodoxy, maybe I will address them someday in a video. For now I will simply say that I have a lot of respect for my Orthodox brothers, and I have gained a lot of insight from them, especially concerning spiritual disciplines, repentance, theosis, liturgy, tradition, etc. I'm also a huge fan of eastern theology in the church going back to Origen (minus the strange bits), Chrysostom, and the Cappadocian Fathers (especially St. Basil the Great!)
couldn't agree more, Old dog, keep it up
Thanks, friend. I will.

Another banger video, keep up the great work!
Thanks, man!
Love the video! Never stop making the videos you want to make. Others may not want to hear about Christianity, but it is refreshing to hear about these things from as religious perspective. As someone who is religious myself, I found what you brought up about finding value in Christ or Christ bringing personal value to our mediocrity inspiring. As we strive to make good choices, we obviously will come up short, but Christ can consecrate our afflictions for our benefit, or use our mistakes to help us find happiness. Keep up the great work, and never be afraid of who you are!
Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement!
134 views is criminal
the amount of effort that clearly went into this is insane
Especially because I'm just now learning how to edit because of these videos. The editing is a huge learning curve for me, but it's fun. I enjoy making these videos. @@mykasiabostic9592

Hey, I think that your video was pretty good and it is clear that you put a lot of hard work into it. I do like your message that it is ok to choose the "mediocre" option as that will be what most people do. It is also clear to me that you are quite religious and have a strong belief in that. Nothing wrong with that but not everybody is a Christian which I think dampens your message since it's not quite applicable to a whole bunch of people... Overall, I like your video but might be better to tone down the Christian tone a bit especially since it's like 25% of your video. Keep it up!
Thank you for the constructive criticism, and the encouragement. I hear you. I agree that talking about Christ will slim down the amount of people that are interested in my content, but I believe that sharing my worldview is all I really have to offer this world. Again, thank you for sharing though.
Nah bro it's my story, I'm a fucking God
Is that Austin? I can't tell. I'm not sure I recognize this absolute giga CHAD. Straight up RENAISSANCE man, who can sing, play guitar, multilingual, MAN-O-GOD, BIG DADDY, shoot and edit HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE STRAIGHT TO THA BRAIN! I'm currently sharing this everywhere. I can't wait for the next instalment. T. Hudson
Hahahahaha, that’s all a bit much I think, but I appreciate it! Glad that you’re watching, bro!
@@wantofwonderI see you staying humble, G. I see you. Oh, and if I can throw a suggestion into the suggestion hat box, one day if you could do Marcus “The Heroic Stoic” Aurelius. (Mostly because I’ve been reading about him lately because I’m trynna be all stoic and cool as a cucumber too like him, supposedly.) BIG UPS A-DAWG seriously though, I’m really proud to see you making content, awesome content at that, makes me feel like I have to kick my butt harder to make more myself! Thanks for the inspiration on multiple levels!
@@getfedup Bro, I appreciate your feedback. It really means a lot! And I’m glad that you’re inspired. I was actually thinking about doing a video on stoicism. I’ll probably do one eventually. The next video is already finished, but I won’t be uploading it until December. It’s on the paradox of choice.
Who does this cat think he is? Did this dude just drop a short with his first video about an ancient historian/philosopher with 🔥FIRE editing and absolutely DROP KNOWLEDGE BOMBS on these gen x'rs?! What a total sigma CHAD.
Austin got obsessed with a book ? Or instrument? Or singing? Or friendship and fellowship?... You don't say :P This is a really good listen and I'll follow along while driving my route for work. Looking forward to these man -kels
Thanks, broski! I appreciate that! I am a bit obsessive, figured youtube would be the perfect place to get that all out of my system. My family is pretty tired of listening to me talk about stuff like this. Might as well make what I have to say a little more artistic, and hopefully impact people in a positive way rather than just pestering my family. Stoked that you're listening! Thanks for reaching out.
