I have been playing Irish traditional music on flute and whistle all my adult life. The tunes have me in their grip...I have been fortunate to play with and learn from many of the legends in our music. I try to cite sources for tunes whenever the version is attributable to a particular musician.
Chasing Squirrels, slip jig by the late David Hicks on an iVolga C
I just bought this whistle on Amazon for 61.00. It is a fixed-tuning C made of maple. While the product description said it had been finished with tung oil, it arrived relatively dry and has greatly improved with a few applications of bore oil. I believe it is made in Russia, has a nice bird engraving on the brass cover to the fipple head, tends to chirp but not in an annoying way, a rather smooth and pleasing tone with enough windway resistance to allow longer phrases. David Hicks was a wonderful singer, guitarist and flute player who wrote some 140 tunes in his too short life. This slip jig is one our group, Coppers and Brass, played for the Champagne dancers in Coralville a few years ago.

The Galbally Farmer on a Michael Burke Pro Viper Low D
Переглядів 15419 годин тому
This is the next to last installment of the Burke whistles. I wouldn't say this is my favorite low D that would be my Goldie but it does speak very easily and has a distinctive bell note. Galbally is a village in Southern Co. Limerick whose dual claims to fame are 1) Conan O'Brien's ancestor hailed from there and 2) the song Galbally Farmer, about a hired hand who was poorly treated. The melody...
Sailor on the Rock, reel on a D Wilson Woods whistle
Переглядів 17621 годину тому
This is a new-to-me instrument, made by a guy who apparently also made fifes, but is no longer making whistles. It came with a two-pocket holster, complete with belt-loop. I was told the maker liked to attend Civil War re-enactments. It is the widest bore D in my collection. The body is very well made, while the fipple block is a bit rough finished on the mouth side. It has a gritty sound that ...
The Banks of the Suir, 2nd setting in Frank Roche's 1911 Collection on a Burke F
Переглядів 12821 годину тому
Continuing to work through my collection of Burke whistles, this low F came to me in 2007. I find it is best suited to airs. Frank Roche, a fiddle player and award-winning dancer, was the son of John Roche dance master and classically trained dance teacher based in Elton, Co. Limerick, later Limerick City. This setting of The Banks is from his first volume of notated music published in 1911. Be...
The Job of Journeywork, set dance on a Michael Burke composite A
Переглядів 109День тому
I have evidently gone down a set dance rabbit hole... I purchased this composite A at least 18 years ago. I really like the tonality of this material but Michael said they weren't selling as well as the brass and aluminum ones, so he stopped making them.
Humours of Bandon set dance on 2003 Michael Burke Pro Session D
Переглядів 97День тому
This whistle was in constant use 20 years ago. I still like its tuning and sweet upper octave. I was thinking about set dances and came up with this one, which was a favorite of mine in the Baltimore Gandy Dancer days, doesn't seem to get as much play now. If I were playing it at a feis, it would be three times through the A part and once through the B, but I like playing through both parts twice.
The Flowing Tide hornpipe on a Michael Burke E
Переглядів 18314 днів тому
I am on a tear to play through makers recently: I have 6 Michael Burke whistles, starting with this E, made in 2001. It is remarkably bird-like and steady throughout the first two octaves. I first heard The Flowing Tide played by the Boys of the Lough, but then heard a rollicking version performed by Seamus Tansey. My setting is somewhere between the two.
Comparison of a stock Clare whistle with one tweaked by Tommy Martin
Переглядів 16214 днів тому
I thought I had worked through my collection of Tommy's whistles, when I remembered I had one of the Clare whistles he tweaked. The whistles have been manufactured in Ireland since 1976 and are relatively unchanged in design. I display one of their two-piece models I bought in Clare in the early Eighties. The injection of the fipple is quite clean on this one, but Tommy noted the more recent on...
Claudy's Fancy, a jig written for me by Philippe Varlet, on a Tommy Martin C
Переглядів 26214 днів тому
This is the final Tommy Martin whistle video in this series. Tommy recognized a particular sound out of this instrument. When he demonstrated it on video, I sent him a message that I wanted it. Of all my instruments, this is the one that I can get closest to the style of the old whistle masters, the guys who could dance between the octaves and put some pulse into their phrases. Philippe and I f...
Around Lough Gill Jig on (another) Tommy Martin D
Переглядів 12714 днів тому
This is the second Tommy Martin scalloped hole D I bought. It is voiced differently, a bit raspier than my first purchase, with a tighter windway. I enjoy both of these instruments; they are both in tune and fun to play. I first heard the jig played on guitar by Jack Coen's son Jimmy on Jack's album with him. Josephine Keegan collected it under this name as well, but recent research reveals it ...
Hanly''s aka James Hanley's or New Line to Loughaun
Переглядів 12214 днів тому
I am working my way through my Tommy Martin whistles: this is one of his early scalloped-hole conical bore models. It has a very round tone, does require a fair bit of air. I took it to Galway and had Seany Ryan give it a try and he liked it. While Patsy Hanly does play the hell out of this tune, I understand it was sourced from (and perhaps written by) James Keane's uncle, James Hanley. Lougha...
The Sailor's Cravat/Repeal of the Union Reels on a Tommy Martin D
Переглядів 23014 днів тому
I just procured this brass and delrin D whistle made by piper and whistle player extraordinaire Tommy Martin in 2008. It is a remarkably light and balanced instrument, very suited to this set of reels, learned from Jack and Charlie Coen's album The Branch Line. I really like the way they set the A part of Repeal of the Union, which they learned from Jim Conroy at home in Woodford, Co. Galway. O...
Review of the Low D Qwistle with 3D printed standard headjoint
Переглядів 13428 днів тому
Donald WG Lindsay of Lindinstruments was kind enough to send me one of his current low Ds. I had contributed to his Kickstarter fund when he was starting out 10 years ago and received a prototype low D with an ABS body. I liked the tone but found the air requirements a limitation, especially in the second octave. By narrowing the windway, making changes to the blade surface and creating a reson...
Craig's (Gregg's) Pipes, reel on a 'Weltmeister' D
Переглядів 221Місяць тому
I bought this promotional whistle from Mary Coogan's father, Jim, back when he was selling accordions. Adler, an East German recorder company, turned out these whistles and had them painted Weltmeister green. I just love the little pops and the strange bottom D you can get out of these this whistle will tolerate a lot of air pressure. If you see an Adler or Weltmeister whistle on the secondary ...
Frank Moloney's/John Eagan's/Forear a Neaintai/n Polkas
Переглядів 181Місяць тому
All three of these are from flute player and set dancer Michael Tubridy's repertoire, played on a McManus ebonite D whistle. The first was trascribed as part of Tubridy's "Memories of Dancing in West Clare" in an issue of Irish Folk Music Studies. He gives the tune as an example of a polka that would have been played for a figure of the Plain Set, and it is an odd one because while the A part i...

I like the sound of it very much. Lovely swing to your playing. 🙂
The Burke whistles do have a sound of their own. I have a D,C, and Bb.
A beautiful song, thank you for the introduction.
Lovely playing Frank. That whistle sounds nice. 👏👏👏
I do like it for airs.
I envy your dexterity, sir. My fingers just plain refuse to move like that without disruption.
Very nice. Loved the speed increase and the quiet ending. :) Awesome.
Wonderful
I made a really good Eb whistle using the head of one of these and the body of a Generation Eb.
That is a thought..
Excellent Frank. Thats a gorgeous tune. Well done.👏👏
Thank you Donie. It used to drive me crazy on the flute.
My friend and I really enjoyed your playing! Thank you for the demonstration!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks.
I love this!!
Good man Frank, you never lost it!
@@vincentdoherty5551 you probably heard me stumble through this tune when it was first presented to me!
That's brisk.

Great playing Frank. Hadn’t heard the first one before. Well done once again. 👍

❤ You're just the Best! What a review!
Excellent !
Very nice! I bought one when they first came out and I got the two different mouthpieces. I think it's the low D whistle with the most flute-like tone. But the "pro" mouthpiece was a bit too loud for my taste. I put that one on a low F from Kerrywhistles (the Optima) which works perfectly. Enjoy!
Lovely tune, I keep coming back to listen to this. I also have a Heikes whistle and it's one of my favorites!
Oh you play well. Thanks for sharing.
Nicely done
Hey, someone else knows the name I do for the last tune - everyone looks at me like a madman calling it "Mickey Chewing Bubble Gum" instead of "Bill Sullivan's" here in the Seattle area. Love your tunes & playing as always!
@@CamStLouis that is the title I learned it by. I believe that was what Cuz called it. I keep coming back to the old tunes: they are catchy.
Nice, well done!!
Really enjoyed this!
The Burke is so powerful, yet sweet in your hands.
Wow that's amazing video sir.ilove it
Wowww what a beautiful song. Nice player
Bravo!
I always enjoy your playing! Thank you.
I put the headphones on for this one. Like the tone and the tune. If you put a reed in that whistle would it be a clarinet?
@@patricktibbits5475 not quite a clarinet. Whistles perform sonically like open tube instruments, like the flute, while clarinets act as a closed tube - so the partials are incomplete.
@@frankclaudy1031 Music is the only discipline where the more you tell me, the less I know.
Can't go wrong with the key of D.
@@tpWinch Terry, how are you?
@@frankclaudy1031 Good, Frank, as I hope you are.
I think it’s stressful to play a low whistle that eats so much air.
@@giorgiolamborghini813 I agree, but for the right tune, it is worth it for the tone.
It's fair to say, I don't think these first ones are easy to play for most people. The Qwistle in my video "Drop of a Hat" is identical to this one in design, so it is at least possible for me to play comfortably. Seems I have a set of lungs on me (to be fair I'm sometimes called on in my family to blowup camp beds by mouth and that sort of thing), and Frank you must have a good air supply too! The Qwistles featured elsewhere on UA-cam are of the later kind, it does take less air, but without losing the sound and the strength of low D. Took a bit of doing, that, and is unlike any other low D head. Happy to send you one Frank if you'd like, since you're still playing the Qwistle & enjoying it - just pm me your address & will pop one in the post for you to try. It's got o-rings just the same as the one you've got, should change out easily enough.
@@donaldwglindsay3837 I will do that, thank you!
@@donaldwglindsay3837 I sent a PM with my address.
@@frankclaudy1031 got that thanks Frank. Will post one out to you tomorrow
Gorgeous!!! This wooden Bb whistle has a beautiful voice but clearly you are the one contributing to this magnificent voice. Many congratulations and much health!
Frank, it's great to hear you playing as beautifully as I've heard in the past even with a healing hip replacement! Great job!
@@beccaschroeder7955 thank you, Becca. I hope you are letting the world hear your beautiful singing.
Yes, a good setting.
A great tune Frank. I had forgotten about that one! Lovely playing.👏👏
So, not an expert as the only whistles I’ve truly owned are a Dixon005, a custom personally made 3D printed whistle, and a Walton’s whistle, but is that a Lir body on a Killarney head?
@@patrickbacher7881 it is all Lir, one of the first models they offered in D
@@frankclaudy1031 Looks great. It was the color of the head piece that made me wonder because it looks so much like a Killarney. I wondered if they were interchangeable for a moment.
Lovely Frank great playing.

I should add that is the most enjoyable version of that tune I've heard.
Thank you for the informative lesson. I enjoyed your exploration of the subtleties of ornament usage.
Beautiful tone from that whistle. Just to note, this isn't a Finbarr tune but one written by the late Brendan McGlinchey.
@@52Paddy1991 you are correct. I will correct the note.
Are you playing that from memory? No score?
Yes, I played that from memory.
Two thumbs up. Thank you.
Sweet tone, and sweet tune, too. I like the way you add vibrato. I want to learn that technique! Thanks for showing! 🎶😊🎵🎶
Thnx alot boss for your work
Nice playing. Just got Mellow Dog but I think mine is more "husky sounding". Top B requires focused attack otherwise it is quite a nice little whistle. Husky but expressive. Takes a lot more air than my Killarney.
