Grave of blues great Memphis Minnie
Memphis Minnie (real name: Lizzie Douglas) was one of the most prominent blues musicians during the 1920s to the 50s. She recorded over 200 songs, and did the original version of Led Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks." Most of her hit recordings were with her second husband, Kansas Joe McCoy. She died in 1973 after several years of health problems. A tombstone was erected several years after passing, as it was bought by Bonnie Raitt - one that was inspired by Memphis Minnie.
The Mississippi Blues Trail placed a marker not far from her grave outside Walls, Mississippi. There, I read her interesting story.

Переглядів 10712 годин тому
This is one of three alleged sites of where blues singer/guitarist Robert Johnson is buried. However, some historians believe this truly was the place - just outside Greenwood, Mississippi in a church cemetery. Johnson's influence on rock and roll music has been praised by numerous journalists, artists, etc and he was inducted into multiple Halls of Fame - including being part of the inaugural ...
Elvis Presley's final concert performance, Indianapolis, Indiana
Переглядів 215День тому
What would be Elvis' final paid performance took place at Market Square Arena in downtown Indianapolis on June 26, 1977. The arena existed only from 1974-2001, and afterwards a plaque was placed at its former spot when it was turned into a gravel parking lot. In 2018, the spot was redeveloped into a mixed-use building and the plaque was moved. The plaque/historical marker, located on East Marke...

Elvis Presley recorded some of his later hits (1969-71) in a studio where Family Dollar sits (in uptown Memphis). He would look to get back on top of the Pop chart, and that he did with songs like "Suspicious Minds" and "Kentucky Rain." Other legendary recordings have been made here including Dusty Springfield's "Dusty in Memphis" and hits by the Memphis-area group the Box Tops. The studio clos...

Elvis Presley's first middle-class house (Audubon), Memphis, Tennessee
Переглядів 46014 днів тому
Elvis purchased this house in early 1956, with the royalties of his first national hit, "Heartbreak Hotel." Elvis and his parents lived there from March 1956 to March 1957, before moving to Graceland. The Presleys were outsiders compared to the neighbors, and fans were coming by the house as Elvis' popularity began to grow. I did not go inside the house, or past the fence. There is a historical...
Overton Park Shell, Memphis, Tennessee

Built in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration, the Overton Park Shell (located in Memphis' Overton Park) became part of rock and roll history as many historians note the first rock concert happened there on July 30, 1954. A young recording artist who had just released his first single (That's All Right) earlier that month was scheduled to open for Slim Whitman. Advertised as "the H...
Elvis' first public performance as a recording artist (outside Memphis)
Переглядів 8314 днів тому
Even though Elvis Presley had performed outside of Memphis before (just in Tupelo), his first performance as a recording artist was at Bethel Springs School in Bethel Springs, Tennessee. It was in mid-1954 that Elvis' then-manager, Bob Neal, as well as Sun Records workers struggled to find places for their new young talent to perform. They were able to get him a gig at the now-demolished Bethel...
KPOC radio station, Pocahontas, Arkansas

Just off U.S. 67 in Pocahontas, Arkansas (the "Rock and Roll Highway"), is/was this radio station that played the hottest tunes back in the mid-1950s. Elvis Presley showed up one night, with one of his records, asking the disc jockey to play it. KPOC was not the first to play Elvis on the radio, but possibly the first outside the Memphis area. A historical marker outside the station was placed ...

Calling itself "the Birthplace of Rock and Roll," this place helped introduce the world to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and several others. This originally was called Memphis Recording Service, but owner Sam Phillips decided to turn it into a label where he could record blues artists. Today, the museum is one of the most visited places for tourists in Memphis.

This is basically what is left of what was once Memphis' classic record shop, which dated back to 1946 and was permanently closed in 2009. Elvis regularly bought records here, before and during the time he was famous. In fact, Elvis thought he officially "made it" when he was signing autographs here. Many early rock and roll recordings, mostly through nearby Sun Records, were promoted at Poplar...

The Lauderdale Courts was a housing project that Elvis Presley's family (him and his parents) lived during their Memphis years, before Elvis' fame. This was the place the Presleys lived the longest in Memphis before moving into Graceland in 1957. Elvis practiced and performed his musical craft while living here, entertaining neighbors. It was saved by the wrecking ball in later years thanks to ...
