Historic Oilfield, Illinois
I check out what once was the community of Oilfield, Illinois. It had hotels, houses, businesses, etc but unfortunately there were no skeletal remains of the places that are now occupied as farmland or woods. The one remaining structure is the old Butternut School which is now the Oilfield Cafe. A historical marker erected by the Illinois State Historical Society was erected in late May 2024.

Located on the campus of the University of Missouri is this field that has been used for crop research purposes since 1888. It is the third oldest agricultural research field at a university in the United States, as well as the the first facility in the United States intended to measure erosion and run-off for differing crops and agricultural practices. A historic commercial building located on Hitt Street near downtown Columbia is noted for its past, as it once was a bottling company for Coca-Cola. It was built in 1935 with Colonial Revival architecture. In later years it would be a printing press and by 2006, it would be home to at least three independent businesses including a local cinema non-profit organization. *National Register of Hist...
Saying farewell to a U. City/STL institution

On December 8, 2024, the popular Frank & Helen's Pizzeria in University City, Missouri, closed its doors for good. For over 65 years, it was a favorite pizza/Italian place for locals and everyone. It was also famous for its broasted chicken as well as their charbroiled steaks and creamy garlic salad dressing. There was no marker or plaque on the building, but I found this to be worthy of its ow...
Walt Disney Birthplace Home, Chicago, Illinois
Переглядів 8321 день тому
A house on North Tripp Avenue in Chicago's Hermosa neighborhood stands out as something special: it is the birthplace of animator/entrepreneur Walt Disney. Disney was born on the second floor of the house on December 5, 1901. His family would live there until 1906 to relocate to Marceline, Missouri. Many people would live in the house until it was finally purchased by a Disney historian/restora...

The Beginning of the Historic National Road, Cumberland, Maryland

In this bittersweet episode, I finally meet my endpoint when traveling the National Road! I had been going east the entire time when traveling it, as Cumberland, Md is generally considered the starting point. I reflect on my travels among the road, and tell some history about it. Also featured in this ep is George Washington's Headquarters. Both sites are located at Riverside Park in Cumberland...
Historic National Road: La Gate Tollgate House, La Gate, Maryland

The only surviving toll booth/house on the National Road in Maryland is in La Vale. In addition to the toll house is a small picnic area park with a parking lot. Two markers are on site, one by the Maryland Historical Trust and the other by the Maryland National Road group. Like the others, there was a toll rates chart - but there is one part of the tollhouse that the other two I visited in Pen...
The highest point on Historic National Road: Negro Mountain
Переглядів 71Місяць тому
Just 30 miles west of the eastern terminus of the National Road (in Cumberland, Maryland) is this small roadside park. The park, located between Grantsville and Keysers Ridge, Maryland, claims to be the highest point on the entire National Road. Once you're driving through the mountain and hills, you'll know why! The mountain nearby is called the Negro Mountain and a historical marker tells all...
Historic National Road: PA/MD state line

Also known as the Mason-Dixon Line (which outlines the north and east border of Maryland), I visit the historical marker that is located right on the state line. The marker was placed by the Maryland National Road Association and America's Byways. It is off of Pigs Ear Road and across from State Line Church in Pennsylvania.

One of two surviving tollhouses on the National Road (three overall) lies in the hamlet of Addison, Pennsylvania. It was known as Gate Number One as this was the first entering PA from Maryland. I believe the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) owns the building and gives guided tours to this day. *National Register of Historic Places* (#79002346) 1979
Historic National Road: Searight's Tollhouse, near Uniontown, Pennsylvania

One of three surviving tollhouses on the Historic National Road lies north of Uniontown, Pennsylvania (it is also one of two surviving ones out of six in PA). I do not go in, but I show the outside of the near-190 year old building. The tollhouse was built at a time when William Searight owned many things, which even had a town named after him briefly in that area. In 1835, the tollhouse was bu...
Historic National Road: First Metal Bridge in the US
Переглядів 269Місяць тому
Located in downtown Brownsville, Pennsylvania, is one of the oldest standing bridges in the United States. The Dunlap's Creek Bridge was constructed from 1836 to 1839 after at least three wooden ones collapsed. It was decided to build an all-iron bridge, just as the Europeans were doing by the late 18th century. The bridge was built to accompany the then-new National Road. The bridge was listed...
