Those things first appeared twenty years before this was filmed!
I miss you Mr Ross 😢
Obrigado
I recognised the second tune, but what were the other tunes called?
If there are any videos of Colin making a drone reeds body, could you please share🙏
Never get tired of watching and listening to Colin. A true Gentleman.
Hi I was wondering if you make and sell the shooting block to make reeds for highland bagpipe chanter reeds, if not where could I purchase one. Regards GF
One of the best teachers i have ever seen, imperial too.love it.thankyou
RIP Colin Ross , you will be missed
Great stuff and clearly demonstrated! What key was Colin's chanter in which he tested the reed? Would this reed do for an A or D chanter?
Very sorry to hear Colin has passed away. He was a great inspiration and will be missed by many, I am sure.
Very beautiful and inspiring music. Great playing. Distinct and wonderfully different from Irish piping. I've been deep into playing Irish music for 30 years and this is just a different and beautiful contrast. (Comments below are unkind and ought to be ignored.)
and to try and compare them with the Highland pipes it's just impossible
did you make your shaping block or purchase it? If you made it can you show us how you made it? Thank you, Douglas
That’s what I call a workshop! Clear ,concise explanation of how to do the black art of reed making.Best video on UA-cam.10/10!
As a Swedish bagpiper, and only have single reeds, this was a great watch. Thank you so much for making this.
wish I could watch this man make an uillean pipe reed as well good work here
can you make a reed for me please for small pipes....
thanks for posting these. Great to see the great Colin Ross, ever sharing his skills. Got to know him well at North Hero Pipers Gathering for many years. Great memories.
Where's Northumbria? Is it a place?
Its a county in the north of England.
Great music, brilliantly executed. The comments below troll out the usual bullshit "it's not yours, it's ours"; "it's Celtic because England was once upon a time Celtic"; "the best pipers are Irish". Proof positive that UA-cam is bedevilled by people who are historically bigoted and borderline racist and believe that "nothing English can be good".
exactly. agree 100%
Best Northumbrian Piper I've ever heard
+Fell Wanderer but there are a few with bigger egos.
I hope to be able to play like that one day my set need fetteling at present
Colin is so relaxed and such a professional. He knows stuff that most will never learn. Thanks. DmcC
wow are these videos informative and i am talking as an uilleann piper- most of the same principles are the same. my only suggestion would be to combine these videos into one as they average at about 3 minutes a piece
Beautiful music.
My time for cane chanter reedmaking has not yet come, but once it has, seeing the IMHO the greatest master of NSP/SSP reedmaking do it properly, will be of great value to me. Thank you for this. I have read his instruction, but for me, that can't compare to watching. For now, back to my synthetic reedmaking. I have orders to fill. :)
We are all brothers and sisters at the end of the day and should do more for caring for each other and the planet.
The small pipe world seems to be exploding with growth so grateful for being abloe to see Paulines virtuosoness thanks.
try to do a bit more research ... what i also found out is the scotch irish in america come from the lowlands of scotland and northern england . the same people as the ulster scots that live in northern ireland now , really i should call them british protestants, looking at appalachian culture you know , dance, music, folk songs . all points to originating from northern england and the lowland scots ..... ALL ANGLO SAXON . not gaelic
yes you really do need to learn some history dont you ...
n the 16th century, the language of the Scottish Lowlands, including the towns and royal court, was Scots; it was closely related to contemporary English. Since Scottish Lowlanders spoke a very similar language to the English and historically had had similar cultural influences, as well as varying degrees of contact with England, 16th century Scottish Lowland names were very similar in general to 16th century English names
Scots is the Germanic language variety spoken in Lowland Scotland and parts of Ulster (where the local dialect is known as Ulster Scots). It is sometimes called Lowland Scots to distinguish it from Scottish Gaelic
Bernicia (Old English: Bernice, Beornice; Latin: Bernicia) was an Anglo-Saxon kingdom established by Anglian settlers of the 6th century in what is now southeastern Scotland and North East England... ive just done some more research and found this
for you as well, the uilleann pipes were originally called union pipes and they were british. so if we could have our pipes back. you irish have no culture of your own . NONE . its all copied from the british
uilleann pipes, weren't they originally called british union pipes and the irish just changed the name of them. the irish have no culture of their own. they just took british culture.
This is fine stuff, and because your ears hae probably been oversaturated by "celtic" music you can't get our head around english music. I've seen it with other people.
your awesome man!
I doubt that many pipers, wherever they're from, consider your opinion worth the time it takes to read it.
A little more research on your part might help you to appreciate that the "video" has nothing to do with the origins of Northumbria and the movement of the administrative borders of these, or any other, islands.
Hermosa melodía. Saludos desde México
Fantastic....
What's all this"My ethnic group is better than yours" shite? Grow up and listen to the music.
Northumbria is more Anglo-Celtic and less Saxon
Hi, Andy! And thanks for the concert in Sweden!!! I´d love to heare you play here again!!! /Magnus
very interesting Colin. Wish I could afford some of your pipes. Maybe one day.
Fabulous. Thanks.
I'm used to tubular drone reeds (for doedelzak) so I'm not sure how this flat piece creates the sound in the Northumbrian smallpipe.
@MarcelGomesPan At it´s biggest, the Northumbrian kindom of the Angles actually streched into what is now the Scottish lowlands (almost all the way to Edingburgh). The Saxon areas where more to the south (Sussex, Wessex, Essex and so forth. Either way, ALL of these peoples (and more) should have influenced both English and Scottish culture.
I guess that makes my country a "worse" part of Europe since Scandinavia never had any big Celtic populations, while all of the British isles has a large Scandinavian heritage. There was differing opinions through time when it comes to national borders around Northumbria where both Scotland and England claimed the same territories. This was however later and Northumbria had already been both Anglish and later "Danish".
I say Mr Comenowmrbond, what load of bollocks! Northumberland derives it's name from north of the Humber land and the people are hence Northumbrians. Once an ancient kingdom that stretch north from the Humber to Edinburgh, and lasted some 300 years.
