Great Dane "Chase", gets a back massage from Tucker and a facial from Haley... he's in heaven... what a good dog :)
Thanks for this video. I don’t have that problem on my Sonic, but I just happened to be scrolling through random videos on UA-cam and this one caught my attention. So I’ve gone ahead and saved it in case one day I experience this issue. I have a Sonic Repair video folder I keep videos like this in. Thank you 😉👍🏼🔧
Thank u. 20 min job, perfect.
There’s a low speed and high speed relay for the radiator fan, and fuses for each, hence the 30A (low) and 40A (high) fuses. The radiator fan plug has three terminals, where the middle is the ground and the outside two are-you guessed it-the low and high speed power inputs. The low speed power terminal actually has a resistor in series (to create the low speed). You can check the fan’s low-ground and high-ground circuits with a multimeter to rule it out.
Awsome, I use youtube videos all the time to get different ideas and information on many things from installing shower tile to auto repairs of all kinds and this is the most informative and detailed video that I have seen in the five years I have been using UA-cam. THANKS FOR YOUR EFFORTS AND SHARING!!!
Excellent video.
My keeps burning off coolant, i just check it every day and add water. And its buring oil. Seems like after i top off thr fluid its okay for a few days and they i have to redo it.
Perfect!! Thanks for a Great video !!
Having some issues with my Chevy sonic right now actually..throwing codes for thermostat and timing belt..hellllp
First of all, i want to thank you, for the time you took to make this video, this help me with my check engine light, P2181 Cooling System Performance. I did the fuse change and the check engine light came off. Thanks.
is the same way will I follow about for P0598 code ?
The thermostat is not electric and will open. The fans may not come on if the sensor is bad. You could have switched the relays from another spot and see if the fans came on, or if there was a problem with the spot that you switched to. The actual temperature sensor that controls the fans is in the side of the engine next to the thermostat housing.
Will overheating cause power steering to go out?
Thank you so much for this video Russel! My 2018 Chevy Sonic (sedan) was not blowing heat. I was researching the topic. I checked the coolant level (it was normal), no leaks from hoses, I was researching replacing the thermostat on youtube and found this video of yours! I went straight to the autoparts store for that 40 amp, low profile J box fuse (less than $5). That white plastic tweezer in the fuse box us the fuse puller. It did not work for the J box size although. Once I removed the old one, I replaced it with the new fuse as you did. Heater came right back on!!! Man you saved me easy $300 plus. Thank you!!!
THE FAN OF MY SONIC BLOWS A LOT OF HOT AIR, IS IT NORMAL OR NOT?
Also fuse 23, ECU, mine a 2013 TM Holden Barina was blown. Fan not working after replacing Thermostat housing and block and coolant temperature sensor. As the Thermostat (electronic), interacts with MAF sensor and ECU, When a fuse blows, you have an open circuit. I resolved these issues without a manual or technician. Just 40 years experience and watching UA-cam tutorials. However, I had to use my own diagnostics process to resolve the undocument issues. Every incident has it's own anomalies or ideo-syncrasities
Thank you for this video
.
FYI, thanks for this video, the fuse was exactly my problem
I'm glad it helped you
So I was watching my fan and it was on but it was turning slowly. Then I tried the fuses swap but now it’s not even turning on 🤦♂️ any tips. Oh and the sensor you where talking about on the tstat like the hole sensor and part of the tstat comes of showing the internal 2 red cables. I’m so confused.
Sounds like you need a new fan motor. There have been reports of that too.
I've found using the higher topped fuse I've had better success. Maybe it's able to cool slightly easier.
What do you mean the 40A instead of a 30?
My radiator fluid keeps being low.
Check for a leak. You may need a shop Mechanic to check it out. Good luck
your a life saver,
Great video!
I'm glad it was helpful

ive changed the coolent housing, and then the tank. what is causing the system to crack on a newer car?
What about the water pump itself? Could that also fail? Usually it leaks when bad because the front water seal wears out, but can the pump itself go bad?
It absolutely could be a defective part. But as you'll see in the many comments, it seems its a hard thing for shops to diagnose, and they do their best, but sometimes it's a as simple as a relay or fuse. I suggest you check the fuses and relays first, if that doesn't help, then take it to a shop for their opinion.
You really can't imagine how long I've been searching for this video. Very very useful for my Chevy Sonic (in Italy its official name is Chevrolet Aveo II serie). 🙏 Thanks
I'm glad it helped. Thanks!
Thank you!
Glad it helped you
awesome this video made it so easy, thank you

Thanks for making this video. My daughter got a 2013 chevy sonic rs turbo and it keeps overheating and bad parts. I've replaced the engine coolant water outlet, the thermostat, some radiator hoses, valve cover, and am getting ready to change the coolant temperature sensor. I didn't run across anything else mentioning these fuses and relays so I'll check them for sure. Ill never buy a "economical" chevy again they are pieces of @#$%. If your going to buy a newer chevy stick to their trucks or the bigger cars like the Malibu, impala, ect
That what happen with my car about the fuse..
Thankss, i just got odb2 screen to check the cooling temp, my temp goes to 108 and then the fan kick, there is times that it goes to 111 , is this normalv
3:23 checking fan
I have a 2012 Sonic (1.8) which overheated this past summer. I suspected it was the resistor for the fan which is right at the plug for it. With no actual proof of what it could be I simply cut the resistor off and wired a relay and a switch to the fan 0 $ as I had the relay and switch on hand. It's not the best situation because you have to be aware of when to turn on the switch. I am in Canada, so overheating season doesn't come often.
Thank u so much. Blown fuse. Only $5. Saved me a bunch of time and money 😃
Thanks for the vid man helped me alot with fixing my fan I realized it wasn't working because the heat warning came on but was just a blown fan fuse you saved me alot of money most likely appericate it!!!
you're welcome. I'm glad it helped you.
That “sensor” is actually part of the heater control circuit-it’s basically a way of electronically controlling the mechanical thermostat. The coolant temp sensor is located closer to the firewall on these cars. Good call on checking the fuses/relays and fan! My wife’s Sonic is acting up and I haven’t looked at those yet.
Hey, I don't suppose you would know if the thermostat rests in the open position? Like if you turn the car off, do the thermostat open?
@@keylay9453 the mechanical portion of the thermostat is temp dependent, so it will stay open on a hot engine, closed when the engine cools to a certain temp. The heater control circuit allows the computer to have more fine control of that open/close temp for better fuel efficiency and emissions related things
Thanks a lot I was able to fix my problem. That 40 fuse 😅
I'm glad it helped
yeah, that is really simple -) thanks for video
I'm glad it was helpful
Great informational video! My daughter just bought a used 2014 sonic 1.8ltr with 115000 on the meter and it overheated. Thank you for taking the time to post this. Overall how reliable is the Sonic in your opinion?
I'm glad it helped you. My son no longer has his sonic. He seemed ok, but like many other car brands, it had its issues.
The thermostat was the culprit. What kind of issues did to experience with your sonic? Was it a 1.4ltr or1.8ltr 4 cylinder engine?
Thank You so much for the video
WOW!! Dealership said bad motor fan $989.00 to replace. Ended up being that 40 Amp fuse. You da man Russ. Thanks
I'm glad my video helped you.
Very helpful video. I had a slightly different issue which is my radiator cooling fan was only working on the high speed setting or not at all. Took the car to a specialty AC/radiator place and they said significant corrosion on the fan motor had disabled the low and medium settings. Replacement of the radiator fan came to $224 including labor (summer 2020) which was significantly lower than I'd expected. A possible cause seemed to have been a very slow leak of coolant from the radiator overflow bottle, which was cracked. I had that replaced later....one of those rare cases where the Dorman component is clearly better than the GM one. I agree, though, fuse and relay stuff is more common than what I had.
Thanks for the information
I bet they changed the block temperature sensor for $12 and didn't tell you.
So how do you deliver 12v to the fan connector to test it?
It's been a few years ago, but I believe I jumped it from the battery with 2 wires. It only takes a second to see if it turns on.
Thanks 🙏 a lot . My daughter’s 2013 Sonic was overheating. I did exactly what you did by changing/using the 30 for the 40 the fuse and the fan came on right away. 😀should I get the 40 one ?
Yes, have a spare or two. Your dealer should be able to help you
@@russelmccombs I bought two 40s . When I first tested it , it sounded like the fan wanted to kick in but it didn’t . The engine was damn hot also. As soon as I put the 30 one in , the fan kicked in and the engine cooled off , and the AC worked even better. You helped me out . Here I thought I was going to have to spend hundreds of dollars. Thanks again! 👊
thanks man
So should that fan continuously run or just when the ac on it should kick on and off
In my experience it should kick on and off, but when the AC is on, I think it's on more than off.
i have a situation. My relay load circuit is good but my control circuit does not reach ground. i tested the relay for continuity on load circuit and using alligator clips to a 12 v battery on control circuit and it is good. where can i bypass the control circuit to reach ground? this is on a car by the way. any comments and suggestion ?
If you have checked the fuse and it's ok, and the circuit has power, then you've reached the end of the work I did to find my son's issue. I would not recommend jumping past the panel or adding a ground before you have taken it to a qualified mechanic. Share with them what you ahve already found and maybe they will be able to identify the root cause. Over the years there have been many replies to this video from folks that went deeper than I did. Maybe they can offer some help. Sorry I cant help you on this.
@@russelmccombs I checked all the fuses and replaced it even if it is good. Just to rule out the fuses. I bypassed the load circuit to the ac clutch and the clutch is engaging. I know that I have a good ac clutch. It's just the relay control circuit does not reach ground.
@@bokdcutie I hate to say it, but I'd take it to a shop. We've seen many shops don't even dig as far as this, but maybe with your info, you'll find a good mechanic. Good luck
@@russelmccombs ok . Thanks for the response
Just be aware that it's not terribly uncommon for the bolts / pins you removed to get that caliper down can be siezed. One or both can come part of the way out then refuse to budge in either direction. If you force it from there, the threads will come out with it, and it's new caliper time. And ... the caliper is apparently not available as a separate unit Just call it a lesson learned the hard way. I finally got mine back together but will not be removing those bolts any more. Brake pads will be inspected and replaced when the wheel is off for other service.
Thank you
I'm glad it helped
Great method for the replacement, but you didn't show any of the actual steps; while it is fairly clear what to do, you are making the video; show ALL the steps you did. Why make any assumption about what is obvious and what is not?
I just changed mine using this video about 5 minutes ago. What he explains is immediately obvious the moment the two bolts are removed.
@@ChoctawFlute I certainly understand that. It was obvious to me, as well, but it may not be obvious to everyone. If you are going to make the video, why make any assumptions about anything? People look for help because it's not obvious to them. Isn't that the point?
@@MrJeffinLodi I can see there are retaining clips on mine. I don’t see them here. I came to look for a video as to how to remove the retaining clips before I damage them.
