not interesting at all. Gay used to mean happy and carefree. Now it generally means homosexual. Gotta be careful what you mean to say these days. Great yodeller by the way. First time i've heard him. Have heard heaps of Aussie singers from this era.

That word is interchangeable. They mean the same thing. I thought this was an old translated folk song anyway

Gene Autry actually wrote this song and recorded it in 1941. I first heard it on You Tube sung by Hank Williams ( a very nice version) and it is also available on You Tube sung by Marty Robbins (also a nice version).

The movie was "On Top of Old Smoky" one of the last Autry films in 1953. Burnette had finished the Durango Kid series with Charles Starrett and came over to do six pictures with Autry. It was a Hank Williams song, probably came out a few years earlier. Gene used a lot of popular pop tunes in his films, including Hank Williams.

the melody and some of the words sound so much like the Hank Williams song. So who borrowed from who? I don't recognize this movie and don't know the date of recording. Or the year the Williams' song came out. Anyone got a clue?
