    The half should list what will be available on course. Whether you want/can use the same in training depends on preference/compatibility. Will want to keep in mind carbs from fluid (gatorade for example) which while running fluids/gels should be easier to absorb. For me at least, easier runs it's easier to maintain a bs level.. vs higher intensity (which should use more glucose than fat as a source) can drop much faster.

    • @stevosUSN
      @stevosUSN 4 місяці тому

    Looks like your training is going good! Just to clarify, I add the extra distance during the run, even if it extends into the "cooldown" period, the timer will keep going even after it says "workout complete". Also, sometimes I'm still feeling stiff after 10 minutes and not ready to jump right into strides, so I wait a few more minutes before pressing the 'lap' button to start them. And then in between the strides and the acceleration-glides there is another opportunity to extend the run. The exact timing also depends on the course, and where the hills are. I started with around 30 minutes per session, and towards the later weeks was closer to an hour, increasing gradually over time. You don't want to do too much too soon, but you also need to eventually prep your body for a 3-hr run. My Half Marathon was yesterday, and it went really well, I felt good and beat my goal time by a couple of minutes. I ended up running most of it, taking occasional short walk breaks as needed, and up the steep parts. For nutrition, during training I tried a couple of different gels and also Tailwind, which is a powder that you mix with water and has the carbs and electrolytes. I don't know how diabetes impacts things, but for me I need to eat something for runs longer than 90 minutes, and that's on top of about 300 cals breakfast about 2 hrs before the run. A gel (I've been using Huma) every 40 minutes or so provides a good amount of energy for the longer runs, and didn't upset my stomach. But you do need to take more water to wash them down.

    • @stevosUSN
      @stevosUSN 4 місяці тому

      Congratulations on your Half Marathon, what kind of time did you get? . I’m gonna start mixing my water with Nunn hydration tablets, that’s what I used when I would cycle. When I started my Garmin coach training , it gave me an option to select “timed” or “just finished “ , I selected just finish, I have another half magic mile this weekend after a 2.5 mile run/walk. Thanks for watching.

    • @Aardvark007
      @Aardvark007 3 місяці тому

      @@stevosUSN I also used the "just finish" option, the slowest time goal was significantly faster than my target. When I started training I just hoped to finish in under 3 hours, but as I improved that became my 'C' goal, with 13 min/mile my 'B' goal, and I hoped to break 2:50 as my 'A' goal. My actual time was 2:46:17, with a negative split and most of the uphills at the end of the course, so I did really well, and most importantly enjoyed it without feeling miserable. For the "magic half mile", I continued with the long run after a couple of minutes of recovery. I ended up running 10+ miles for 6 weeks in a row leading up to the race, including my longest one at 13.7 miles (3 weeks before the race), which really helped the race not feel too long, and gave me the confidence that I could cover the distance. Another thing I did change from the prescribed plan: Galloway puts the longest run (14 miles) the week before the race, which for me was too close, I really needed a 10-day taper period. So I shortened it to 9 miles, and ran it in the middle of my Zone 2 heartrate (most of my long runs were low Z2) so it felt closer to race pace without being too taxing.

    • @Aardvark007
      @Aardvark007 3 місяці тому

      @@stevosUSN for nutrition, you should check to see what they provide at the aid stations for your target race, if there is going to be anything besides water, and if possible try it out in training to see if it works for you. My race had Nuun endurance formula, which is similar to Tailwind (my preference), and quite different from their hydration product. I also like the Huma gels. But I don't know anything about running with diabetes, so you'll have to figure out a compatible fueling and hydration strategy. I was aiming for 60-75 grams of carbs per hour, and ended up just a bit below that, which gave me plenty of energy to cover the distance.

      I just finished Week 14 yesterday with my longest run ever, 13.7 miles! (12 mi + warmup and cooldown). It's amazing because when I started 5 miles felt very long, now I can do 10 like it's no big deal (as long as I keep it slow and easy). But I did gradually increase the midweek runs from 30 minutes to 45-60 minutes, and sometimes add an extra short easy run on a 4th day. The extra volume during the week seems to make the long runs more manageable.

    I don't have any videos, but similar scenario.. Had done a lot of cycling (including another 100 mi ride for 50th bday) and a friend who did the ride with me wanted to do a 70.3 Ironman in Hawaii for their 50th year. So in early 50s started the running/swimming journey in 2017 and was able to complete the 70.3 in 2018. Since then have done 19 half marathons, completed 3 70.3 (with ramp ups for 3 others but due to storm/covid cancellations were not able to complete) Currently ramping up to do another 70.3. Also being diabetic. First suggestion I would have that if you don't have one already is to work with your doctor to get a continuous glucose meter. It has helped tremendously in learning how fuel and even how different meals behave (for example, finding out that some meals may delayed 2hrs before spiking up.) Currently contemplating what to do for turning 60 and a full marathon is one possibility. Consistency, and not increasing mileage to fast are huge factors. Btw, another adventurer seeing that you will have riding/running under your belt.. a triathlon could be next ;)

    • @stevosUSN
      @stevosUSN 5 місяців тому

      Wow, congratulations on all your accomplishments. I’ve done a couple century rides in my late 50’s and now that I started running I kinda slowed down on my cycling, for a while I was doing gym , run, and biking at the same time but now I mostly do gym and running. As far as the glucose meter- I’ve asked my VA Dr. but they won’t do that due to cost (they go the cheapest route- metformin), and she said it’s like 200.00 a month to monitor with the glucose meter which is out of my budget. I think I’ll be ok with gels for the half marathon but for the full marathon I’m gonna ask my doctor again about the glucose meter. I swim like a rock so I’m thinking maybe a duathlon in 2025. Good luck in your future ventures and let me know how you do on your marathon, I know you’re gonna kill it .

(same for longer rides) Best of luck with your training/journey! BTW, also being in TX that marathon could be a possibility but leaning to the BMW Dallas (being closer). I'm using the exact same Garmin Coach plan for my first half marathon (in Brooklyn next month). The Tuesday and Thursday sessions remain the same throughout, and the long runs gradually increase (I'm up to 10 miles). I've added in a bit of speedwork (intervals, hills, tempo) on the midweek runs after doing the warmup and drills, after a few weeks the brief 30 minute runs seemed to short, so I aim for 45-60 minutes for each. But overall it's a solid approach to build up your aerobic base in order to go the distance. At first it felt like 4 miles was a really long run, but a couple of months later I knocked out 10 miles almost comfortably, and feel confident that I'll be able to go the distance on race day. Good luck with your training!

      Thanks for watching, I did my 1st drills yesterday and it’s only 26 minutes long , 20 of those minutes are warm up and cool down. They do seem short, but I’m gonna stick with it. I was running 12-13 miles a week at zone 2 , so hopefully it works out . If you record your half let me know so I can watch it. Thanks

    Weather looked absolutely perfect for a bike ride 😊 Hi, I’m also a T2 diabetic and a keen cyclist. Took up the sport 6 years ago this month. I’ve always struggled with nutrition on the bike but also struggled with blood sugar levels in general. I always thought I needed carbs and sugar on the bike for fueling and never thought to test and adjust while cycling. Hope to see more content soon ❤

      I also started running about 6 months ago , it has also helped with my blood sugar. I sign up for a marathon in December of 24, I think it should take me about 6 hours ( I hope), so nutrition is gonna be a challenge. I’m hoping my crew ( my wife) can meet me through out the run to check my blood sugar . Thanks for watching and if you make a video let me know I’d love to watch it, good luck to you- stay safe .

    I’m thing of getting the base Diverge E5. At 72 I haven’t ridden in 12 years but used to knock out 1000-1500 miles/year on the road. With your experience would you recommend this bike? Thanks

      I have 3 other road bikes but this one is the most comfortable, it’s not light or have a lot of gears like my road bikes but it is comfortable, I put mine for sale but thinking of taking it off market place. I just have too many bikes. Thanks for watching and if you make a video let me know .

    I like the stable pair to app. There also is a magnetic mount type, lithium battery powered (theft reasons)thanks for the real review.
