    I'm torn about buying this. I hear great things about the collar (60 days, 90 days into use) but the ppl who have experienced issues and had to warranty their collars, it sounds like Spot On is a nightmare to deal with and are difficult to get ahold of. That doesn't seem to be your experience though. I would need two collars, which would cost about $2600 Canadian so the poor reviews on customer service and warranty are making me nervous to buy. How is your collar now, one year later?

    • @firepinkfarmtn
      @firepinkfarmtn 12 днів тому

      Our experience with Spot On has only been good, even before we partnered together for this second review. Our first video is super honest and critical about certain issues, but the response we got from the company was always helpful. The second edition fixed a bunch of the weak points, and now in May 2024, the collar is still working great for Esmy. She has free rein of 30 acres, and is doing well. Btw, collars are $999 right now, and you can get $25 off with our code in the show notes. So technically only $1950 USD for two : )

    We just purchased this… hasn’t even arrived yet but I have a question. My in laws have a farm and we will be making their property one of our fence locations. Will they be able to still use this collar when dog sitting for us, without the app, or will they need the app? It sounds like once I set the boundary and save the fence (and once dog is trained), we should be good to go with just them having the collar and charger?

    • @firepinkfarmtn
      @firepinkfarmtn 12 днів тому

      Hey Shaunna! To change Fences from your home to a separate location, you'll need to change it within the app, so it knows which Fence is active. Technically, if you drop off the dog at your in-laws, and change it to their fence before you go, they won't need the app for any reason. Would be advised to make sure your dog understands that new fence's boundaries before leaving them.

    I haven't put the static correction hwv the beeping and alert went crazy while training and kept ringing long after we were well in the safe zone. That makes me very weary about continuing...Id be so upset if that were to happen WITH static correction like it did with your dog. That is scary n unacceptable.

    The vinegar acidifies the soybeans to impede the growth of unfriendly pathogens. If you add some rice flour that helps perk up the spores by giving them something easy to digest before moving onto the soybeans.

    Regarding the defining the map boundaries....with the latest version of the collar and app, you can now draw the boundary of the map on your phone app without walking the perimeter. I only have 4 acres but the back of my property is full of brambles and the app made it super easy. Regarding the static level, it sounds as though you could reduce the static level or turn it off all together since she seems well trained on the sounds.

    Great ideas! How did it hold up?

    • @firepinkfarmtn
      @firepinkfarmtn 3 місяці тому

      It held up really well the whole first winter until we got a few inches of snow. The black plastic tubing wasn't strong enough to hold up without bending, and stayed warped even after the snow melted. (We continued to use it for the whole next winter though!) If you live in an area that doesn't get much snow, then it would be fine, but in the future I think we will spend a little more money to use traditional PVC since it's a lot stronger!

    As an Indonesian, I give this video a super like. The process is right, the result looks great. I can tell it’s perfectly fermented. What happens if you leave them on? i have been told that i need to skin cucumbers to make IE mustard pickle,and it made no diff to leave skin on Also tomatoes need to be skinned to make soup etc i am way too lazy and the soup and pickles were great Also, about your "incubator" , can i ask which one that is and what temp you used? i have read the unit you use needs lots of airflow. Does yours have lots of airflow? If i can't find your incubator, would a dehydrator work as well? Excaliburs are expensive, but i see others are affordable i am chuffed to do that. Your tempeh looks amazing and had me craving PS i have no idea where to get banana leafs,i will need to research Are they reusable if washed and refrigerated? Thank you mate

    Finally- A review that cuts through a lot of the weeds. My biggest question is, did you find that Esmy was nervous when trying to take her for those walks when she was walked towards the boundary even with the collar off her neck or the fence deactivated? I understand that she wouldn't hear the warning tone so should feel safe going through, but I am interested to hear what her reactions were.

    • @firepinkfarmtn
      @firepinkfarmtn 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the compliment! She seems to FULLY understand that when the collar is on, she has a limited boundary. Likewise, when it's not on - she knows she can walk with us without getting warned. I think right around the time the collar was new, she was a little nervous at first about going on walks.

    Nice tempeh and set-up. Vinegar is actually a "cheat" to lower pH that make it easy for the mold and hard for bacteria. The traditional way is to cook the beans and leave covered (sterile) for approx. 24 hours to ferment naturally. The flavour profile is 100x nicer the natural way. There's a book called The Book of Tempeh that has every detail.

      What you said is 100% true. I’m Indonesian and in Indonesia we don’t use vinegar to make tempeh. However, I understand the climate in 4 seasons countries is different and vinegar can be used to speed up the fermentation process. You also can use rice flour if you don’t want to use vinegar. I wouldn’t recommend using ACV because it makes the tempeh stink like smelly feet

The only thing that we’ve noticed is that the black plastic tubing sags a little after time, especially after a heavy snow or ice weighs down the plastic. Next year we might replace it with pvc, which we’ve heard is stronger!

    Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful video & your fabulous hacks! Many years ago when I could still tolerate soy, I made my own tempeh in a stainless sheet pan & incubated it in my apartment sized gas stove that had a pilot light. It was too hot, so I propped the oven door open just a bit w/ a canning ring til the temp was just right. Back then I didn't know about removing the skins, I just mashed the soybeans w/ a fork. I really like your use of the food processor. And I like the banana leaves too. One of our local Asian groceries has them frozen, a wonderful way to get away from plastic next to the tempeh. My directions said to mix the spores with the vinegar & then sprinkle over the soybeans, combining well. When the soybeans were generating their own heat, I took the pan out of the oven to place on the counter, still covered with a damp towel. It stayed there til there was a nice, thick, beautiful white mat yours. Always perfect, always delicious, never any flops! Thanks again!
