DID JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA MOVE THE STONE! While millions of Christians around the world are thinking about Jesus' burial in the tomb and his resurrection on the first Easter Sunday morning, it behooves any who want to know what really happened on the first Good Friday to contemplate how Jesus never got a proper burial and, because he didn't, the world was forever changed! The Canonical Gospels tell us a very wealthy, if distant, admirer of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a member of the highest, Jewish, religious body at the time (the Sanhedrin) wanted to give Jesus a proper burial. However, he ran into a long delay, leaving him with very little time to get all the proper supplies needed for even a modest funeral. Then, once he FINALLY got back from the market place where he was only able to find the fine linens to wrap him in, but nothing else, it was all he and his slaves could do but quickly wrap up his bloodied and soiled corpse, lay it on the stone burial bed, roll the stone over the tomb opening and rush home. Why? Well, we need to recall that the Jewish Sabbath, (a 24 hour period, beginning at sundown on Friday and ending at sundown the following Saturday, during which Jews were strictly forbidden from doing anything that could be perceived as "work") was about to begin, and Joseph of Arimathea had run out of time, thanks to Pontius Pilate taking his sweet time to grant him custody of Jesus' body (insisting he had to personally get confirmation of Jesus' death from the centurion at the site of execution), plus the fact that Joseph had not thought his chances of getting the body of Jesus were good enough to buy, ahead of time, everything needed for even a modest funeral! By the time he got to the market, a lot of the shops had already closed down, so he couldn't get the traditionally required funerary spices and ointments, just the fine linen! Once he got back, with the sundial edging right up to minutes before sundown, he figured the only thing to do was to put Jesus' body in the tomb and come back later to do the job right! Trouble was, he didn't exactly coordinate with the women who had been tagging along, like Mary Magdalene about his backup plan! She and at least one, other woman, were close enough to see which tomb Joseph's slaves stuck Jesus' body in, but clearly had not gotten with Joseph on when or how they would come back later to complete the funeral...as was evident when they were asking each other on the following Sunday morning, "Wait, who is going to move the stone cover?" Little did they know, Joseph and his slaves had already discreetly removed the body under the cover of darkness, shortly after sundown (the end of the Sabbath) on the Saturday evening beforehand, with the innocent intention of getting the rest of the supplies the next Sunday morning and, after having Jesus' body properly washed, anointed, re-wrapped, a few prayers said, and maybe a hymn sung, then nicely replace it in the tomb....problem solved! Well, like Robert Burns said, "The best laid plans of mice and men do oft' go awry!" That fateful Sunday morning, probably just as Joseph of Arimathea was about to have his slaves put Jesus' body back in the tomb, someone came running by his villa to pass on a rumor that was spreading like a fire all through Jerusalem, "Jesus has risen from the dead!" Imagine how Joseph's heart sunk to the bottom of his stomach as he quickly put two and two together, figuring that, once Pilate got wind it was HE who took the body from the tomb, Pilate was going to find it very difficult to believe Joseph was not the main conspirator in league with Jesus' disciples to steal his body for the purpose of faking his resurrection, making a mockery of him and Rome itself! At that moment, Joseph probably decided his best chance for not ending up on the next cross to be executed, was to have his slaves quickly dispose of Jesus' body in some secret location, set them free with a bribe and one-way tickets on the next boat out of Judea, and took his secret to the grave! To be sure, this means he would have subsequently thrown the disciples of Jesus under the bus when he was probably asked, "Did you know anything about this fake resurrection business?" and all he had to do was shrug up his shoulders and say, "I know as much as you do!" Or who knows, he may even have been the first to suggest to the Temple priests, "Maybe it was Jesus' disciples who stole the body!" There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). In contrast, the “tongues” Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians are producing today is an entirely self-created phenomenon. It is non-cognitive non-language utterance; random free vocalization based upon a subset of the existing underlying sounds (called phonemes) of the speaker’s native language, and any other language(s) the speaker may be familiar with or have had contact with. It is, in part, typically characterized by repetitive syllables, plays on sound patterns, alliteration, assonance, and over-simplification of syllable structure. It is also interesting to note that any disallowed sound combinations, i.e. consonant clusters, in the speaker’s native language are also disallowed in his/her tongues-speech. Further, this subset of phonemes typically contains only those sounds which are easiest to produce physiologically. There is absolutely _nothing_ that “tongues-speakers” are producing that cannot be explained in relatively simple linguistic terms. *Conversely, when it comes to something spoken, there are absolutely **_no_** Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s), though it may not be the explanation you want to hear, and it may be one which is radically different from what you believe, or were taught. Nowhere in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced.* “Praying in the Spirit” does _not_ refer to the words one is saying. Rather, it refers to how one is praying. In the three places it is used (Corinthians, Ephesians, and Jude), there is absolutely zero reference to 'languages' in connection with this phrase. “Praying in the Spirit” should be understood as praying in the power of the Spirit, by the leading of the Spirit, and according to His will. In Pentecostal/Charismatic parlance however, the phase has come to be equated with modern “tongues”, i.e. when one “prays in the Spirit”, it signifies that one is typically engaged in some form of tongues-speech. The word “tongue(s)” itself is simply a more archaic word for (real) “language(s)”, nothing more. Replace “tongue(s)” with “language(s)” in these various passages and the whole modern Pentecostal/Charismatic concept of “tongues” begins to become difficult to posit - “language(s)” sounds a lot less mysterious, and in many cases, adds more clarity to the text. Again, in Pentecostal/Charismatic parlance however, the word has come to be equated with the modern concept of “tongues-speech”. Most people who use ‘tongues’ are very keen on describing the ‘experience’. Indeed, for those that use it, it is very psychologically, physically, and spiritually fulfilling. It’s almost like primal screaming. When people practice ‘tongues’, they feel a sense of sweet release and inner peace, in that virtually all stress can be gone after the experience. People describe the experience, but in examining the “mechanics” behind it…well, not so much. When a person has experienced tongues, s/he is absolutely convinced as to the ‘scripturalness’ of his/her experience, and the correctness of his/her doctrinal beliefs - this, despite the overwhelming scriptural absence of anything remotely akin to what they’re doing. I'm not doubting or questioning the 'experience'; as mentioned, glossolalia as the spiritual tool that it is, can be very powerful and, for many people, the experience is profound. As one commenter put it, “Speaking in tongues distracts the ego/analytical/conscious mind while leaving the subconscious (the heart) wide open to import the divine." Both the spiritual and physical benefits of using this tool are also well documented. Again though, it is important to note that this same statement can be made for virtually _any_ other culture that practices glossolalia. Religious and cultural differences aside, the glossolalia an Evenki Shaman in Siberia, a vodoun priestess in Togo and a Christian tongues-speaker in Alabama are producing are in no way different from each other. They’re all producing their glossolalia in the exact same way; they just have different explanations and beliefs as to why they’re doing it, and where it comes from. “Tongues” is to some Christian believers a very real and spiritually meaningful experience but consisting of emotional release via non-linguistic ‘free vocalizations’ at best; non-cognitive non language utterance - the subconscious playing with sounds to create what is perceived and interpreted as actual, meaningful speech. “In _some_ cases, I would argue that it is clearly a self/mass delusion prompted by such a strong desire to “experience God” that one creates that experience via “tongues”. Indeed, as one writer puts it: “You want this to be real. You’ve convinced yourself it’s real. You’re improvising the sounds, but there is nothing about what you’re doing that cannot be explained in natural terms. The only reason it sounds like a language is that you want it to sound like a language. But it’s not.” Known by many different names, “tongues”, “glossolalia”, or more accurately “non-cognitive non-language utterance” (NC-NLU), is practiced by many cultures and religious beliefs from literally all over the world; it is relatively new to Christianity and certainly not unique to it.

Pastor Mike presents these hard truths in Scripture about true love with grace and mercy even revealing his own areas that need God's guidance. Truthfully hearing what God's Word says about how we are to spiritually love is quite convicting to the point of allowing God to make my mind and heart more like Christ. Forgive and not keep a record!

I wish you had addressed the mask issue and assuming (but please share if you disagree) you would say requiring a mask in public falls under the category in Scripture where it says to obe government because it does not go against any law/precept/mandate of God. What greives me the most about Christians saying they won't wear masks is that it usually comes from a standpoint of "their rights" (my first reaction to that was they certainly don't know the Bible -- our only right is to obey Our Lord). It greives me because what they are really doing by saying they won't wear a mask is not showing love to the vulnerable. What I usually respond to this is that not wearing a mask in the grocery store or in preparing food in a restaurant means you could be sending home to a vulnerable senior who has mutiple comorbidities the virus that may cause them death or future lifelong suffering from complications of the virus . This is because many vulnerable seniors are staying home because they are high risk but having their groceries/food delivered. Then because so many grocery items are encased in plastic a person not wearing a mask could have left the virus on those groceries in the store simply by talking above them. No one knows that they are giving the virus to others when they are carrying it but are asymptomatic. Then those groceries they may have left the virus on are delivered to the vulnerable and seniors. Why this is such a big deal is the church in general no longer are seen as even loving their brothers and sisters in Christ which will then draw the lost to the love of Jesus then the lost will find out their need for the Lord's sacrifice on the cross for them and be saved. There are many Scriptures I believe for wearing a mask including "thinking of others more highly than themselves.". Its sad because negative stances like this are why so many lost are looking to the government for a Savior. I have heard the lost say that if Christians demand that they not wear a mask then that is not love and they don't want to be around that kind of selfishness. Wearing a mask is mainly to protect others more than protecting ourselves. I hope you will share you view on this from Scripture.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
