We who lived the first who watched the first release of the Americanized releases appreciated it for how good this show really was and have kept the faith all these years. how the story line was much deeper and engaging than what we had at the time "Josie and the Pussy Cats in Outer space", "Space Ghost", "herculiods"to name a few although I do recall this shows fondly they paled in comparison" It has been noted that Calling it "Star Blazers" or " Space Battelship Yamato" is now synonymous with each other. You mentioned this had a real Greek mythology feel to it. The English translation referred to the Yamato as the Argo whic hwas the ship that Jason and the argonauts travelled on. The other gems that we have watched through the American censorship translation at the time another pivotal classic was "Battle of the Planets" which we later found out (again no internet or any real manga in the bookstores in the 70's when it was released) was called Gatchaman. I may speak for some may also remember the Black and white release of Astroboy and Prince Planet. Even the live action for runner to Mighty Morphin Power Ranges, called Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot.

In fact that Garmillas aren't actually evil species, The Cosmo Navy are the ones who fired first. They all fight their lives to save their dying planet, not until it happened in 2205 The Whisper of the Witch episode in Space Battleship Yamato is the only episode that has a horror in it

Star Blazers was the first sci-fi I was exposed to and made the biggest impression on me and helped to mold the life I would lead. It was must see TV and every day I couldn't wait to get home from school to tune in at 330 PM to watch the next episode. Even though there were only 52 episodes, I watched it religiously for 2 years when it was on the air. When I heard about the reboot, I was excited to see it and was not disappointed. I agree with all of the good points made here and it was done right. This version seemed more "grown up" which was perfect. The show has a strong maritime/naval feel to it and I liked seeing the crew dynamics and its relationship with the ship itself. Perhaps the best improvement is how battles were handled. This time around they crafted them in a way that removed the impossible amounts of damage the Yamato received in the first go around. The concept of the wave motion shield was a good plot device to use when the ship had a real big fight on its hands. And it maneuvered in ways to dodge enemy fire.

DO A REBOOT SERIES OF SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO 2199 its cheaper to use a great working GUNDAM 00 GRAPHIC ENGINE its all ready completed and make a NEW GRAPHIC ENGINE is going to take way too much time and money that is going toi be used for a short amount of time and put it to the grave use what is they got GUNDAM 00 GRAPHIC ENGINE it keeps the cost down. while it delivered a MASTER PIECE

I think the 2199 is the ultimate version of the original story. I loved how the new characters were added and old ones evolved, the Gamillian empire really resembles me of the Zeon Empire from Gundam. A masterpiece of Space Odyssey

"Star Blazers" as a name has more to do with the success of "Star Wars" than it does with people not accepting the name "Yamato". There's a reason why Kodai's name was changed to "Derek Wildstar" in Star Blazers.

One of the greatest animated properties EVER created. It was a huge influence on my brother and I and the reason we got into animation. We would not have created BLOOD OF ZEUS, if it wasn't for this property. Also, this remake was AMAZING!

The rebuilt Yamato was not the original (which was cut in half when the US repaid the Japanese for the Arizona), but a replica built and sunk on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the original Yamato.

Didnt 2199 release as films BEFORE the release as OVA? Also 4:10 that has been retconed, the original series has the space Yamato built inside the old original Yamato because it was believed that the ship sank in one piece, but after it was discovered the ship broke apart, in 2199 the ship was merely disguised as the old Yamato instead.

As a massive One Piece fan, I love that the live-action adaptation helped many people get into the series. I love looking at people's reactions and seeing them fall in love with the show. It even got my brother to watch the anime! I think all live-action adaptations should treat their source material with the same amount of trust and care as the live-action One Piece.

1000 years later, with the word "Rebel" in the title. You never watched the original "Space Pirate Harlock". It took place 1000 years after "Space Battleship Yamato". Harlock turned "pirate" after Earth was taken over by aliens. So, Harlock et al were rebels. So, they seem to be melding together the continuity of the two franchises. Which, it you watched them, you realize they are in the same universe. Heck, one of Harlock's crew members actually builds a Yamato model -- not the WW 2 version, the Space Battleship Yamato version.

One of the most memorable things from the original series was that somber voice of the announcer at the end of each episode. "Only n days left until the total extinction of mankind!" It absolutely hammered it home just how much pressure was on that ship and his crew.

Although I loved StarBlazers as a child. Much later in life I watched the unedited Japanese version. Not only do they show American fighter planes attacking the Yamato in an early episode. Later when they destroy the floating continent the Captain lectures the crew about the use of WMDs and how dangerous using this power can be. Clearly a reference to the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in WW2. The entire original series is an Imperial Japanese apologist exercise. You are being dishonest with your audience or are just ignorant.

The original SBY (Star Blazers) was a masterpiece, and I still love it to this day. This was my introduction to anime, and this series still has a place in my heart along with Akira, Gundam, etc.

About 8 years or so ago I watched the original again and even got to see the final season (The Bolar Wars). A year or so afterwards I saw the 2199 remake and I gotta say I thought it was better than the original. It fleshed out the Gamilons better. The Comet Empire (season 2) was well done too. The third seasons however for both were so so and the remake of the 2nd got too meta for my liking, but that's just me. This and G-Force (Gatcha Man) got me into Japanese anime. Yes I called them cartoons until a few years before Robotech came out when I learned the term. I loved Astro Boy, Great Mazinger and Dino Mech Gaiking when I was able to find an episode here or there. It was hard finding anime in the 70s for a kid around 7 or 8 years old.

2199 is probably my favorite remake in media history. It is so faithful to the source material but also makes surgical improvements where appropriate to elevate the source material to new heights. My favorite change is probably expanding the character of the captured Garmillas pilot into the recurring character of Melda Ditz. I like a lot of the additional Garmillas scenes in general, showing the story of their nation and their perspective on the Yamato situation.

This series is a loveletter to the original and Star Blazers version. As many aspects of the Starblazers version was added in. For example the Argo name is used for the magnetic mine system, Gamilas using robotic crew and the Gamilas skin color being greenish are just a few. 11:50 oh yeah Akira got Starbucked.

Excellent Video! I loved 2199. I'm currently working through 2202 and I agree it does not meet the standard on the first season. Thanx to your video, I'll watch Star Blazers to understand the comparison. Thanx again for the work you put into this, it's very appreciated.
