The play explores themes of repression, passion, and conformity, and inspects the effects of men upon women. In his essay “Religion in the Rural Tragedies,” John Gilmour argues that Lorca’s social conscience motivated him to present religion in such a negative manner. Lorca’s critical stance on traditional Catholic morality is very much in line with the Republican thinking of his time. The main objective of the legislation introduced by the left-wing Republican government of the early 1930s was to ensure that the personality of the individual could develop in total liberty. This meant lessening the power and influence of the Church on Spanish society.

When we started the play we thought it would be Hamlet without the laughs. However it turns out that there is some humor to be found in it.

@@clostermonk The play have a humour in it. If people laughed at a certain scenes, that doesn't mean they lose the message of the play. I've actually watched this play in one of the most prestigious university here in our country. There are scenes wherein people are laughing, and it's normal. But in the end, we really talked about the message of the play.

To be honest, the public can be ignorand and uneducated too
