    First off, what's the picture at the 3:15 mark called? It looks awesome! Secondly, I have so many D&D books in my library already; including two cookbooks. The only things I DON'T have are Field Guide to Floral Dragons (something that was funded via Kickstarter) and anything Vox Machina or Mighty Nein related. I already have Chronicles of Exandria: Mighty Nein Vol. 1 and the book talking about the history of CR. I don't, meanwhile have Kith & Kin nor any of the origins books

    Just discovered this channel. I am a game dev teacher in California, I have the rpg club to go along with my classes, but I was wondering what is the state of game dev education in Illinois. Out here in California we have game dev as CTE standards. Is that the case out there? For example, my intro class makes an rpg, some students make several, over the course of a semester.

    Saw a house rule called The Devil's Bargain, where a player can choose to trade a nat 1 for a nat 20, but the DM then has it in their pocket to make any of the same future check a nat 1. Important to set some ground rules of the Devil: it is not your friend, it is evil, and it will use this when it will hurt you. A player could only have one bargain running at a time.

    • @TeachersintheDungeon

    I haven't fudged a dice roll in over a year or changed any monsters hp. There are no stakes if I decide the outcome. I want my players to feel some sort of stress/excitement and I rob them of that and their agency if I take away a true outcome. And I do sometimes roll hot and have killed more characters in the past year, it is unavoidable if you take the outcome as is, but none of the kills felt unfair and I don't feel as guilty as I did when I was fudging a year ago. One night I kept rolling open and according to my players it is absolutely terrifying and very exciting. Because they know when I crit I am able to take their characters out. I felt cheated when it was done to me when I was a player. I want my actions to matter. The dm i played with wanted to have his first tpk because he said he messed up with giving out magic items and boons and didn't have a way to revert it so he decided to tpk. Since he had very little experience I was able to forgive him, but I also hated that decision. Please put in some effort to balance encounters and rewards.

    • @nebs6200
      @nebs6200 7 місяців тому

      Counter-argument: there are no stakes if you TELL them you decide the outcome. You should NEVER invite your party behind the screen, that is the smoke and mirrors - a good magician never reveals his secrets. You are a storyteller, not an impartial referee. You work in service of the story you and your players and collaborating to tell. It isn't a fun story when half your cast dies due to what is quite literally the luck of the dice.

    • @TeachersintheDungeon
      @TeachersintheDungeon 6 місяців тому

      I can appreciate that point of view, Petrick.. I suppose like everything else in this game, it comes down to having the right table dynamic--a completely lawful neutral DM needs players who can handle the fact that there will be no mercy.

    • @TeachersintheDungeon
      @TeachersintheDungeon 6 місяців тому

      @@nebs6200 Good point. I guess there can be a tension between playing the game as a "game," versus playing it as role play. Important that everyone at the table is on the same page.

    The Illithids enslaved the Githyanki for millennia, and eventually, I think the Githyanki developed a resistance to their mind control and were able to overthrow the Illithid Empire, killing most of their former masters, and forcing the remaining few into hiding.

    Just found a Leprechaun mini game. Which seems like a lot of fun. The Hidden Leprechaun Hollow. I ran my friends son and his group through Black Wyrm of Brandonsford. It has plenty of opportunity for role play and interaction. There is also a scene with a sleeping giant and rescuing a cleric where first level characters shouldn't fight the Giant. Sneak in and run away. Very Fairy tale. But yes this module has them engage with a Giant, a Dragon, a Witch, a leprechaun like creature that is stealing liquor from the bar. There is a pitiful goblin king and the goblins are arrogant but will talk to you. There are snooty elves with talking dogs and again they will interact with the characters. There is a scary crypt, and there is a final fight with a dragon but a lot of the early stuff is fun and comical. Samurai Jack got past a lot of anti-violence in cartoon rules by fighting robots. So yes Skeletons, animated objects and armour, and golems. Elementals work too.

    Creatures running away!! YES! This is how I used to do things. Makes more sense than creature attacks and fights to the death. Just found this channel, viewed your offerings and subscribed. Yes full exp for defeating the encounter. Killing is not required, only overcoming the challenge. Caveat to that is if they don't engage and simply scare it off the opponents then very little to any exp is awarded as no danger was actually confronted. Perhaps a bit for clever thinking? Yea a little.

    • @TeachersintheDungeon

      As always in DnD. . . it depends. ;-) I'll slow down when the players are 'having a moment' in role play, when they seem particularly interested in an NPC or an environment and it seems like doing so will build their interest in the adventure and the world.

    I've such a hard time to roleplay. I am also not very good at it and feel so awkward to use a voice and play in character. So most of my roleplaying is describing the actions my character made. I really like the battle of wits example you gave and will try that with my players

    Great discussion, guys! I'm really glad to have found your channel. About combat, from my experience both as a player and DM, the key is keeping it dynamic and challenging, but fair. The Gravely Mountain encounter is a perfect example of how to make dynamic combats. Adding timers with consequences could be a cool way to ramp up the dynamics. I've learned that I personally think challenging and fair fights are often most engaging, but I have a hard time calculating the average damage output because my players don't always play optimally. So I now attempt to bring one player to 0hp (unconscious) to still keep the challenge. As a player, my sweet spot is a group of 3-5 people, not including the DM. It helps avoid long waits for your next combat turn. I also learned as a player that the DM must keep the monster hit points consistent. If players are doing well, let them enjoy the win or maybe add another monster instead of just beefing up the current one’s HP. Changing monster stats mid-game can make players feel cheated.
