The Final Video | Episode 8 from the Appalachian Trail
Thank you all so much for all of your love, support, kind words and encouragement extended to Mark (AKA 316) while he attempted his thru hike of the AT.
Last week he made the very hard decision to end his thru hike attempt. This video has all the details, but suffice it to say that the joy from the trail was not outweighing the struggles and that it didn't seem sustainable.
I wanted to share how very proud I am of what he did accomplish and the many very hard things that he did do that show his strength and accomplishment.
- He trained very hard and thoroughly before he got on the trail and really got himself in good shape.
- He got us logistically ready for his hike. ( house maintenance...etc)
- He hiked 476 miles of very hard trail in very challenging weather
- He made the very difficult decision to end his time on the trail
When all is said and done, I am so grateful that God gave Mark this opportunity to accomplish so much of his goal to start his retirement doing some really hard and challenging things! He may not have made it to Katahdin, but he still accomplished much!!
THANK YOU all so much for all of your kind words and encouragement in so many ways. We read each one and it really meant the world to Mark to know he had so many people cheering him on. Blessings on you all!!

Appalachian Trail Shakedown Hike at Greenwood Furnace State Park
Переглядів 4969 місяців тому
While at our family's cabin in State College Pennsylvania, dad did a "Shakedown Hike" at Greenwood Furnace State Park during a cold January day. By definition, a shakedown hike is a short backpacking trip that a hiker takes before embarking on a longer hike, such as the Appalachian Trail. On a shakedown hike, you have two goals: test your gear and test yourself. Gear held up well in the cold an...

I have watched quite a few AT hikers and my favorites are always the ones with hearts full of gratitude.
Thank you for sharing your journey! Prayers Sir!
That’s a HEAVY base load! With my weak knees, if I hike a long trail, I’ll have to ultralight
Sad to see this journey end. Looking forward to your next if you choose to share it with us. 470 plus miles is no small accomplishment! Keep your head up! Thanks again for sharing.
I've enjoyed your videos and I pray God blesses you and your family.
Sorry to hear you had to jump off. REALLY enjoyed your videos each week. It will always be there for you if you want to finish it later. Hoping to get to attempt a thru hike later in life. Your son did an amazing job with the videos.
Best wishes! I hope you’re eventually able to hike the entire trail even if it is in sections. 😊
I will miss you! Wishing you and your family much joy!
I'm going to miss you man. I know the mental game. Hope you choose to fight it. Nonetheless, God bless you
I know you’re disappointed, but you did very well! You can thru hike another year or you can become a LASHer if you choose. You were so joyful that I hate the disappointment I see in your eyes! Heal your body and then your spirit ( it takes longer !) and regroup for another day🌻
Stay positive and move on to your next adventure. It was great to follow along and see your positive attitude. Thanks.
You did awesome, knee pain is no joke, I could not even think about doing the AT, loved watching you!!
Sorry to hear about this Mark. Regroup n get stronger and smarter
So sorry buddy. Just for the record, been watching these vlogs for about 10 years. The quality of your vlogs were seriously the best yet. (Great work David!!) Wishing you the best. 🙏❤️
You accomplished a lot! Well done.
Best wishes for your next adventure.
You did great Mark! With a wonderful family at home, you'll have great adventures together! Take care!
Hola, Mark! Your old high school classmate, Ken Heim here! I'm so happy you have retired and are living your dream! Congratulations!! My wife and I have been married for 34 years are now fully retired as well and are doing our version of 'living our dream' in Costa Rica! Until last year we lived in Franklin County, very near the AT and my wife Dianna used to work on maintaining the AT. Please feel free to hit us up! We'd love to hear from you.
WahHooWah. Thankz 4 sharing. Lyve 4Ever Compadrez
The church is always worth the miles. FAITH will take you to eternity
Welcome to our beautifil northeast Tennessee and southwestern va Appalachian mountains.
Awesome seeing Fresh Ground! One note for you....The bible verse at the beginning of your video is not Mark 11:28. Its Matthew 11:28.
Great assessment re the Grit! I love that area. One of my favs. Sorry your weather was not the best. It’s a beautiful section. Really nice to have your family meet you!
What a wonderful surprise from your family. 😊
Once you pass the Elk River at around mile 401.5 you’ll be done with North Carolina. Emerald forest? Mt. Unaka.
Another great video. Glad to see people still enjoying the Overmountain site. I saw the forest service inspection and it truly was a potentially terrible accident waiting to happen.
Grit 💪🏽 way to power through!
Well done, I look forward to your posts. Safe travels
I really appreciate your videos,great job …Congratulations on 300 ……the TRAIL does provide 🌿🍃
Great video of your journey through the Smokies. You had great weather. Others im following had rain and ice. Thanks for sharing
So glad that you didn’t get hurt when you fell!! Gadget is a sweet person!! I’ve been following her channel too! So happy that she found your handkerchief and got it back to you🥰 That is a really cool handkerchief! 300 miles already!!! You’re flying up those mountains!😊🥾🏕️🌲 Wishing you all of God’s blessings as you continue your great adventure 🙏🙏
I saw my first set of through hikers on Easter, in Boiling Springs about 15ish miles north of the half way point. Doing great!
Thank goodness they restricted Max Patch, after they did that all the wildflowers grew back and it restored itself beautifully. Like all beautiful spots, too many people and well the beauty disappears. Over loved for sure. Congrats on the 300.
Beautiful video. Love Gadget.
Absolutely incredible!!! The Smokies are a magical place 🥰. I’m so happy for you that the weather was so pretty! Those blue skies and views are breathtaking! Thank you so much for sharing! And David, you are a AWESOME EDITOR!! Prayers for your continued good health and happiness on the trail🙏💕🥾🏕️🌲
Thank you for watching and for your encouraging words!
I am enjoying your videos so much!! Thank you 3:16🙏🥾🏕️🌲
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful capture of the Smokies. One of the best I’ve watched.
Thank you! The Smokies are an amazing place for sure!
Beautiful! Congrats on making it through the Smokies!
Thank you!
That smile at the end when you saw your wife 😊
😊
❤❤❤
David, thank you for these exquisite videos! 316 Thank you for sharing your journey. I was so excited to see another video posted. You and your wife are adorable. The pure joy on your face is priceless! 🤟
Glad you’re liking them. We’re keeping them coming! 😁
Last year I was the only ridgerunner for AT in the Smokies and logged 1,046 miles on that section during my work. Love being able to remember that experience with your beautiful videos. You were really blessed with some great weather! I love it it when hikers have good Smokies experience. It’s a sacred place for me. Kudos for going up Shuckstack 🗼
Wow, that is a lot of miles. Thank you for your work. It is much appreciated!
I am loving your footage! Just gorgeous!
Making great progress Mark!
Doing great! You have done your research and are making very good mileage decisions.
Thank you!!
That it is. I know hikers who had your pack weight, all the way to Maine, and did just fine. You’ll lighten it up in warmer weather. Looking forward to hearing about your experience in the Smokies!
Agreed and excited for warmer weather for sure. Thank you!!
Good video!
Congrats for taking this adventure! I'm cheering for you. While you have nice gear, as you mentioned, it's heavy. Are you considering changing out part of your big three? Thanks for sharing and be safe!
Great question. Probably will keep my big 3. Get my lighter sleeping bag when it gets warmer and loose some warm cloathes. I am carrying the load fine and not looking to add cost. Big 3 are expensive.
@@TheSecondSummit That's understandable. Continue to listen to your body. Enjoy your adventure! Prayers for you!
Looking strong - physically and mentally.
Have fun in the Smokys! BoDiesel, 2018
