Nano-Informatics is an emerging interdisciplinary field that merges the domains of nanotechnology and information science, with the goal of managing, analyzing, and interpreting data generated from the study and application of nanomaterials and nanodevices. This series delves into the foundational principles and evolving technologies that enable the integration of nanotechnology with computational tools, data analytics, and informatics systems.
About the NBI Knowledgebase
The NBI will fill important gaps in our understanding of the risks associated with nanomaterial exposure by defining the relationships between nanomaterial physicochemical properties and the biological responses to their exposure. Such structure-activity relationships will provide regulators with an unbiased interpretation of the scientific information necessary to support regulations that protect human health and the environment. This will, in turn, provide developers the knowledge to direct the development of safer nanomaterials and nanotechnologies while also providing academia with a deeper understanding of nanomaterials as novel modifiers of biological processes.
Information currently being gained in the emerging field of nanotechnology is extremely diverse including a multitude of widely varying nanomaterials that are being or will be tested in a broad array of animal systems and in vitro assays. Knowledge of nanomaterial-biological interactions will likely only be arrived at upon inclusion and consideration of the entire body of data produced from global efforts in this research area. Compilation of this data will allow for the definition of nanomaterial structure-activity relationships. Such mathematical representations can be used to predict nanomaterial properties in the absence of empirical data.
Biological Implications of Nanotechnology
There has been a rapid proliferation of different types of nanomaterials in which very minute changes in the surface chemistry or size of the nanomaterials can lead to radically different biological interactions and effects. Nanotechnology is fueling the next industrial revolution. Lux Research estimates that the advantages offered by nanotechnology will result in a $2.6 trillion industry by 2014. Products such as computer chips, batteries, transistors, and novel drug delivery systems are being joined by facial creams, chocolate, ski wax, and disinfectant cleaners on the list of everyday products which utilize nanoparticles. Such rapid growth of the nanotechnology industry will obviously result in increased exposure of humans and the environment to nanomaterials.

With distinction, Dr. Muhammad Naveed obtained a Ph.D. degree in Biotechnology (Genomics & Bioinformatics) from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, and a Post-Doctorate (Bioinformatics) from Jiangsu University, China. He has won Ph.D. indigenous & IRSIP scholarships from HEC. He has done Pre-Doc research at the University of Ghent, Belgium.
