    i just got the planar 3 TT, the neo psu and the elicit mk 5. is upgrading the p3 sub platter to aluminium considered an upgrade? is there any audible benefit? if yes, can you get the aluminium sub platter from the p6 (ie does rega sell it as an upgrade for the p3?) and simply replace the moulded plastic one that comes standard on the P3 or is there more to it than that? is there any recalibration required via the neo psu? i am suspicious this is a material upgrade but thought i would ask you guys! thx

    No offense but, this technology date's from the 1970s. Yes optical phono technology is that old. Due to the astronomical technology leaps with LED this company can do away with magnets and coils in the future: It is a paradigm shift. A moving magnet cartridge can sound better than a moving coil BTW. The shade (s) are on and off on this cartridge you are speaking of. Again not digital. Nice try/sell with Audioquest. Try Purist Audio Design. Better cables. Excuse me...if you clean your records and care for them.properly there is no major groove noise. I clean my records before and after play and clean my stylus before and after. The need for capacitor storage is hardening back to Krell amplification of the mid to late 1980s . Large capacitors =dynamic range and control of micro dynamics.

    Huge respect for Vandersteen. But… All of this, and more, can be achieved with a studio grade dsp and multiple (active) power amps of your choice. Phase coherence. Time alignment. Steeper crossover slopes, which assist the drivers. Dedicated amplifiers (numerous benefits). Parametric equalisation. Room correction. Almost all audiophiles (and designers) are too lazy, or too ignorant, to employ this vastly superior electroacoustic engineering, save a few notable exceptions: Sanders Sound, Linn… ehm (I wouldn’t include Meridian or Kii as they have built-in amplification) p.s. InnerSound had a high-pass power amp, with analogue adjustment, c. twenty years back.

      We use iPads at the store for everything except the CH Precision app because it is currently only available on Android (we have a Lenovo tablet we use for that). The tablets do not hold any music though and just function as a remote control of sorts. We are currently running a Roon server to control playback of just about every system in the store.

      @@HiFiBuys Roon definitely makes sense for you guys, with the variety and volume of systems that you operate. I might give the CH Precision app a try as I'm Android. I like how my Qobuz/Tidal playlists are setup on my phone so no real need for Roon, just looking for something other than my phone to control it all. Thanks so much for your response, much appreciated. 👍🏽

    • @HiFiBuys

      @tima.478 the CH Precision app only connects to their products for setup and control. What streamer are you using? That will determine what apps will work for you. Using Tidal Connect (and the Qobuz equivalent when available) is probably the best option if you don’t like the native app for your streamer, and most apps will run on either iPad or Android tablets so there are plenty of options. Give us a call or stop by sometime if you want to get more specific. All the best!

      Based strictly on sound quality, I would go with the Luxman, but it is 4x the price of the most expensive EverSolo, so it’s not an entirely fair comparison. For more specific recommendations, I’d need more information…for example, the EverSolo would likely handle Apple Music better since the Luxman doesn’t support that service natively. With the caveat that I haven't listened to the latest Vandersteen models, several years ago I listened to EgglestonWorks Andras and Vandersteen 5s and 5As. While the Andras, an almost tiny speaker, threw a soundstage that reached the ceiling, both Vandersteens had a soundstage that barely reached above the top of the speaker. You can hear a simile of the Andra sound in today's DeVore Orangutan O/96, both in speaker size and soundstage size. Very few reviewers notice this enormous difference among speakers.

    It can be debunked in one second flat. Ready for it? Ok here we go. 1. Instruments in a live performance are not all lined up. They are scattered. 2. End of discussion class.

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      Not sure what this has to do with time and phase alignment of speakers. Are you suggesting that each driver in a speaker corresponds to a specific instrument in a performance? And so must be "scattered" to accurately reproduce a performance? The sound of a snare hit, or a singer's voice, contains a broad range of frequencies (and engage multiple drivers simultaneously when played back) yet those individual sounds come from a single point in space when performed. If the drivers aren't time and phase aligned, then the illusion of that recorded sound when played back will be less convincing than it would be if they are. Convincing placement of multiple distinct instruments throughout a soundstage is the central benefit of time and phase aligned speakers.

  • @flex-cx9bi
    @flex-cx9bi Місяць тому

    Vandersteen being the only designer applying time and phase coherent techniques? What a ignorant comment. There are quite some companies that use 6dB/octave filters and time alignment.

    I always wanted a button for "standing" and "sitting".... most speakers are made for sitting. I like standing.

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      Setting up speakers properly takes into account your listening position's distance from the speakers as well as your height. With Vandersteens specifically, all of their speakers are tripods with a single spike in the back of the speaker for setting the amount of rake to properly align the drivers for your listening position. You could easily set them up to sound best while standing instead of sitting, but it's much more difficult to make changing the position of the speakers as simple as the press of a button.

  • @scottwheeler2679
    @scottwheeler2679 Місяць тому

    You absolutely can make 2nd, 3rd,4th order and higher crossovers that are both time and phase aligned. You have to do it with DSP.

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      Absolutely! Sorry if we suggested otherwise. Every speaker design is a series of compromises and one of Vandersteen's central design choices is to do everything in the analog domain, which means no DSP. We have yet to find a DSP-controlled system that connects with us emotionally the way that Vandersteen speakers can. There are advantages and disadvantages to any approach, and at the end of the day, all that matters is that you enjoy listening, no matter the equipment or design choices!

    Very informative chat. Thanks! During room setup with the equalizer, is that done using calibration equipment that tweaks for the room variations and then with that baseline, an individual's listening preference can be inputted (either with the owner's preamp or using the speaker's equalizer)? I ask because of my diminished hearing at certain frequencies. Thanks.

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      Hi Ed! Thanks for watching! The setup is done using a series of test tones that correspond to the individual potentiometers on the back of the speaker's bass amplifier. We run tones through each speaker individually, and then again together, while measuring sound pressure levels at the listening position using an analog RadioShack SPL meter (nothing fancy), and then adjust the pots on the speakers to correct for any bass anomalies caused by the room. This adjustment is done to compensate for issues with bass response at the listening position and not to adjust for more/less bass according to personal preference. We are only adjusting frequencies from 120-200 Hz (depending on the model) and below during this process, so this is not intended as a replacement for a full-band EQ.

    Yup do Vandersteens. If I had the choice over 20 years ago it would have been difficult. I ended with my Medowlark Kestrel powered by Antique Sound Labs fully tube stereo amp. The beautiful part is then you can get an integrated amp for (at most) 4.1 theatre system. Get those amazing from LR and great amp. After that you can put together anything you want. Even wait a couple of months and save for those speakers you really want Going on 22 years with my Meadowlarks and I don't want anything else. My big advice ... don't continue chasing and buying and selling. Pay more for those great front speakers and they will last for 20... 30 or so years.

      Technics 1200 is a great line of turntables but they don’t exactly fit into a budget system like we’re discussing in this video - unless you find a great deal on a used one! Just be careful who you buy from 😁

I was also welcomed to one of the rooms for a listening session. It is huge step up from anything I have heard. I will completely move all of my equipment from Boulder to CH. If you are ready to move to your final lifetime system this is the system!!! These are great tips for getting into a superb stereo without "breaking the bank." I appreciate your comments about the Vandersteen 1Ci+ "disappearing." To clarify, this is very challenging to accomplish, and it is a combination of a speaker design that transitions between its drivers without a hiccup that draws attention back to the speaker, a great combination of electronics, cables, stands, and the essential dealer set up in your room. If any of these are off, it suspends the musician performing in the venue to realizing you are in your living room with a stereo system. For nearly 50 years now, the aesthetics of the introductory Vandersteen products have allowed us to reach sonic performance way above the price point and have a cost-effective finish that can be restored to like-new aesthetics for little cost. The caps come in a wide variety of veneer finishes as well. Luckily for Vandersteen, the "vintage" look is in again!

      Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience, but hundreds of happy HiFi Buys + Rega customers would attest to it not being “junk”. That being said, there are a lot of great options in this price point these days. We’ve certainly had a handful of issues over the years, and that is why shopping at a local shop is so important if you’re lucky enough to have someone nearby. We set up and check the performance of every turntable we sell before they go home and are here to help if you ever have trouble down the road 😁

      I am sorry that you had such a bad experience with your RP1, but you can absolutely adjust cartridge alignment (though that is almost never necessary), tracking force, and VTA (with shims) on Rega turntables, so I'm not sure what you mean. The only meaningful adjustment that isn't available on the current Planar 1 is the anti-skating force, but on every other Rega arm, that too is adjustable. The Rega Carbon that comes on a Planar 1 does have a replaceable stylus and if you purchased an RP1 prior to the Carbon, while it didn't have a replaceable stylus, the arm at that time did offer anti-skating adjustment 🤷 The other Rega cartridges are all built intentionally as one piece because it sounds better than a replaceable stylus, and they offer a discount on a replacement when trading in a worn cartridge that brings the cost of a new cartridge down to the same price as competitors' replacement styli.

    I am curious as to the wow and Flutter for the Rega Planar 1 turntable I could not find it but am interested to to know how much lower is it compared to the Technics 1200 GR2 Wow and Flutter 0.025 I have one an I am concerned about how poorly the direct drive performs because it is not a belt drive. Thank You

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      I'll assume that you aren't being sarcastic here, but I hope that my comments about choosing a turntable in the ~$500 price point didn't cause you to start doubting the performance of your $2,200 turntable. Most tests that I have seen online for the Planar 1 put it in the 0.15-0.20 range for wow which in general is lower than most humans can perceive. Direct-drive tables typically measure much better for wow and flutter in my understanding, but the design presents other obstacles that must be overcome. Like everything in hifi, design of a product is a series of compromises, and there are great-sounding products in all categories, it comes down to what you personally are sensitive to or prefer. Happy listening!

      @@HiFiBuys Thank you for that. I know that the question sounded sarcastic but I seriously wanted to know and I could not find the answer and I have decent google-fu. I have watched a couple few video reviews and the 1200 GR2 is apparently crap compared to the 1200 G. I run a good MM cartridge as a good MC costs a bundle and makes me question trying to go up the food chain and I keep thinking why not go down the food chain price-wise as I am interested in and like vinyl but not enthusiastic enough to sink 10k plus into a record player and cartridge. So, long story short I am genuinely interested. Thank you for your response.

    • @HiFiBuys
      @HiFiBuys Місяць тому

      Looks like the 1200G is about twice the price of your table so I certainly hope it would perform better. I don’t have a ton of experience with the new Technics turntables as we don’t carry them, but if you’re enjoying the sound of your records then you’re doing something right 😁 We’ve learned that there’s never a point where there’s no way to improve your system, even at the crazy high end, so enjoy what you have now and look forward to possible upgrades down the road 🔊

    This playlist would turn me off music for ever......! I can't see any point in evaluating system components or speakers with music that isn't in the core of my own listening pleasure. Evaluating a potential purchase with anything else is crackers. I would begin with my worst sounding beloved recordings and see what the speakers can do in terms of mitigating or resolving the smearing and compression therein. Then I would know what I need to know.

    Aw, little sweetheart, the 90s, "not recorded too well". I grew up with music that was REALLY not well recorded. Some was recorded in one take in a studio with the band and the orchestra together, including the drums, some recorded on 4-track (or even 2-track) tape, much of it had really poor bass, some was in mono. (Not that it mattered when usually played on a valve-driven record player with a crystal pickup in mono through a 4" speaker.) The Kinks played guitar through a broken speaker to get the distortion, rather than a digital effect. I remember Pink Floyd Piper at the Gates of Dawn album being one of the best, Sergeant Pepper was a revelation, so was Led Zeppelin II. Another album I had showcased the pleasure and reproductive quality of 33rpm stereo... And then Dark Side of the Moon, we sat with a bottle of cider each and listened to each side all the way through.
