My father-in-law Capt. Robert L.Lage was CO of USS Robison DDG-12 which attacked a North Vietnamese ammo dump in 1971, an action for which he was awarded the silver star. According to the citation 500 shells hit close aboard. I have combat photos of his ship chasing after enemy gunboats in the immediate aftermath of the attack. When he came back to the US he got spit on. He passed away in December of 2021 and it took a full 20 months before his burial in Arlington could be scheduled.

I was stationed at NAS Alameda in VA-304. VAK/VAQ -308 were behind our flight line when I arrived in 1972 and left in 1975. They were always turning and burning running engine checks. Like to have wiped us Plane Captains out on the 304 flightline. Ha!!!

To clarify, in the old designation, the “D” after the “A-3” stood for the manufacturer, Douglas Aircraft. I was on the USS Ranger in 1973 when we lost an A-3 during a night launch. The airplane went off the waist catapult and exploded as it went into the water. All 3 crew died.

Served with VAH-4 in the early 60’s, in heavy four most of the air crews like them, as a nuclear weapons crew chief I got to ride in 3rd crewman seat and the jump seat, let me tell you it was one hell of a ride both the cat shot and the landing which was referred to as a controlled cash, was over enlistment by a month and we were in Yokosuka Japan on r&r, got sent to Atsugi flew home in a A-3 that was repaired at Atsugi to Whidbey Island, first stop, Wake Island, second stop was Hawaii then on to Whidbey, sat on the jump seat the whole time, what a back breaker, out of the Navy 5 days later, couldn’t ask for a better squadron than Heavy Four!
