I have to take another look at this game, I only played it for a short while. Though I played the sequel a lot, I was addicted to the golf game in it.

Cecil is probably my favorite FF protagonist, and it's not really close. I think X might have been my first, but IV was the first FF game I bought and I loved Cecil's story. I'm a big fan of the themes of both light and darkness, so having a character who embodied both was awesome. I particularly like in Dissidia where he can freely switch between the powers. I guess the only thing I never quite understood is how or why he became a Dark Knight exactly in the first place. I know they say it was "for the king" but they are vague about it. Was it the real king or Cagnazzo who pushed that on him? How does one become a Dark Knight, and why are there no others? Does the process really rob you of all feelings and emotion eventually like Cecil alludes too, or could it be possible to be a heroic dark knight?

The combat is really what makes it for me, a real time action card game is as far as I know unique. Having every action other than movement based on a deck you build and play in real time was, once I got used to it, very fun.

To add to the thing you said it's just speculation, because this point really clears up the fact this is almost certaintly canon, Nomura in kh1's ultimania straight up confirms the necklace being from Riku in the Oblivion keyblade description. he states that this was the "riku keyblade" in production and that in first drafts of the story, riku was also supposed to give sora a charm like kairi does in the final game, adding that this is the reason why Oblivion's keychain is a dark version of Sora's necklace. this explains why Oblivion has not actual meaning in kh1 besides being found in a random chest, since they changed it so it was a forgotten gift from riku as kids (Oblivion's actual name is even "far-away memory" too). absolutely amazing video btw, you hit the nail in everything else! i guess the only thing missing that i'd say its very important is the major mistranslations and censors this game suffers from, with Aitsu and neutral gender pronouns which clues us into sora and riku's bond, including on the meteor shower happening between the two of them and much more (tidus and everyone, influenced by sora's heart, constantly teasing sora he has a crush on "him" is extremely bold) being turned all in female ones dissolving a lot of the nuance in the original script and messing up the hidden meaning of what was going on. also i love the way sora's heart in general influences the disney world to mention stuff he wants Sora to focus on, mainly relating to riku. his heart doing literal fanfiction with beauty and the beast to rationalize why repliku was being so awful to him by making belle say line by line every hurtful things repliku says especially in japanese is soooo cool!

Re:com is so freaking good. As someone who loves action games, I still think the card system is great; really liked adjusting my deck to fit in new spells and summons. Even when I felt burnt out on the combat I just... avoided the encounters lol. The boss fights were hella fun too whether I was using sleight spam or "playing fair." Story can be hit or miss: disney world retreads can feel pretty tedious at times, but the new stuff is pretty great with Riku's arc being a highlight. I find it really compelling when games subvert the "light=good and darkness=bad" trope and after KH1 really drilled that trope in, Riku's arc subverting it to the point where even King Mickey reconsiders his stance on darkness really scratches that itch for me. Riku's conversation with Diz at the end, "'do you mean the twilight road to nightfall?' 'no, it's the road to dawn' " is something I always think about when I fondly think of this game. Banger as always, and shout out to RIku's nose.

Ib has been on my wishlist for a few weeks now because it looks interesting but I dont usually jump into indies. Good to know that it is free so I can try it and even support it on Steam if I feel so inclined.

I enjoy the Gummi ship levels. I don't get in-depth into them that much but I did make an ultimate ship. I don't necessarily get the Gummi ship hate.

Desch is my favorite extra party member from this game. Especially in the remake where they actually occasionally chime in to do extra attack in battle. I think you are a little unfair to Refia. She always came across as perceptive to me from what I remember. As a good judge of character I mean. Plus her freaking out over frogs and her reaction of becoming one during a dungeon segment during party talk skit is hilarious to me.

Diiiiiiiiiiiiirge 😬🫠🫣 I’ll forget i heard that statement 👀😅 i think ff 7 holds a special place in the hearts of everyone that played it on release, because it was monumental at the time like seriously we hadn’t seen anything like it up to that point so there is that with a mixture of nostalgia. Ff7 is top 3 for me with ff8 and ff10 🙌🏾 i love everything in the ff7 compilation apart from dirge as personally its just way to cringe worthy for me and the gameplay was poor . Hopefully they tidy it up in ever crisis as they confirmed we would be playing dirge and advent children in the future which does have me excited ❤

What I loved the most about this video is the length of analysis you managed to reach and basically hit bullseye every time for things that you don't seem to be aware of that the directors already confirmed, for example Nomura makes a big point literally every time he talks about Kairi about her fear of change, and about Riku not having a crush on her and doing what he did in Kh1 for other reasons, including his shame and regret over kairi's heartless state (can post the quotes of both of these if you need me to). I also especially love how you dismantled very easily the Riku teasing sora about the paupu for the race, since all the novels and short stories that actually let us see their thoughts make a point to show how much more complex and not straightforward everything that it's going on their heads is. I am assuming you don't know these quotes because there are some other stuff mainly for the mistranslations present in the game that you don't bring up so you haven't heard of them, some really interesting stuff like Kairi hoping they'll survive the journey on the pier while in English she just thinks it'll be great, or Sora calling Riku stupid is just an English thing, in jp he is just very worried about riku's behavior. This also goes into a lot of other super interesting things, which as the series continues just become more and more apparent, especially with Chain of Memories, that one has such huge glaring mistranslations that completely change the entire script's meaning. And related to this Com thing and your love for the Oblivion/Faraway Memory keyblade, another thing the director confirmed is that originally in Kh1 Riku was supposed to give Sora a lucky charm like Kairi does, which is why the Oblivion keychain is Sora's Crown! That is the reason unfortunately Oblivion is placed in such an inconvenient spot in the game, it's basically scrapped content technically. However, I know you already played the series, but keeping this in mind for Com and what this information implies about this event that was supposed to happen and the detail Nomura brings up is.... Really interesting. After com, kh3 is so riddled with mistranslations that remind even went and fixed a few of these, so I wonder if you know about both of these too!

This is precisely why I feel the Pixel Remaster is lacking due to not having the Dawn of Souls storyline included. It literally brings those characters' arcs and the themes of the story full circle. It is necessary to have it in to fully experience the FF2 story, in my opinion. I also feel a remake could really help bring the better aspects of this game and fix others. Looking at YOU LEON. Gosh he is such a karma houdini, and his "Black Knight" role literally served no purpose to the story. Especially when his archtype were and have been done since much better.

My GF's favorite part of KH is the Gummi stuff lol OFC it is pretty much her first video game. IDK why they made Divine rose so strong in KH 1.5 it wasn't like that originally. I tried installing a mod that did a bunch of rebalancing and was supposed to fix it but it made all the text invisible. I just try not to use DR.

Thanks for sticking up for Kairi! She does get a bit of a short stick from the writers but I think she's underappreciated by the fandom. The problem is that her charecterization is pretty subtle and requires examining other characters to really understand her. And YES when I got back into KH after almost 20 years away from it I immediatly saw how Sora is meant to be insecure about himself, having Riku beat you at fighting and races (for most people their first time) and all the people on the island telling him that Riku is so much cooler than him made it pretty obvious. In fact the game does a lot of things to make you feel bad about yourself but then pushes you on to keep trying. What's funny is that its also clear that Kairi is actually kinda freaked out about how Riku is acting and Riku is not that interested in Kairi at first other than her signifigance of being from another world and a way to tease Sora. Regardless there is definetly a lot of early teen angst and hormones kinda going on here but in the end, Sorra is willing to go beyond THE END OF THE WORLD to save his friends. I admire how it exploits common anxieties, especially for young boys, but then tells them that while it's ok to feel that way, you can't let it control you to the point of giving up or giving into jealousy. You made the point that Riku and Kairi are foil characters which is a great observation! The Light/Darkness comparision is obvious but it's also really cool that we have a Masculine/Feminine contrast too and both are presented as part of who Sora is and both as positive when in balance with each other! Was interested by your specfic Riku/Kairi segment too. I definetly don't think Riku was interested in Kairi romantically but I do think Sora probably thinks he is so I can see why people might be confused. I think Kairi kinda became an emotional proxy for Riku, like he was always the one that looked out for Sora and protected him but when Sora started being able to take care of himself more it made RIKU feel insecure (the irony) and so the reason he became so obssesed with rescuing her was as a way of reaffirming his identity as a protector. Obviously he definetly cares about her in general but it really was the perfect time for Maleficent to take advantage of him. Building off my Masculine/Feminine Idea, if Kairi is the Princess and Riku is the Prince, It's even stated he was SUPPOSED to be the Hero until he messed everything up, Sora is the Androgynous Prince/Princess embodying aspects of both and viewed depending on Perspective. to Kairi, Sora is a strong but kindhearted Prince and to Riku, Sora is the cheery Princess who requires protection. But When Sora becomes less timid and more confident, Riku prrobably started feeling unnecessary and got Jealous. To back this theory up, I think there is a reason Sora takes the place of the Princesses in KH2 on the Stained Glass as he's in the same kind of deep sleep that is associated with the Princesses. Plus we literrally have Ven in 0.2 sleeping in Snow White's Glass Case which seems pretty definitive to me. Hope this ramble is interesting to people! Loved your analysis!

Your analysis of Kingdom Hearts is giving me similar vibes to my Crash Bandicoot stuff! I jumped in on KH a little later in my life but all the same this is a good reminder of why i love the series so much.
