Scratch wouldn’t exist without the darkness. The games presented two (contradictory) versions of him. In American Nightmare he is the personification of Alan‘s dark side; the quick to anger toxic celebrity whose surrounded by dark rumors like murder. In Alan Wake 2 it’s simply Alan overtaken by the darkness. But there never was a version if Scratch capable of being good, since he was just a product of the dark place one way or the other.

@@saucefreakystyle Mr Scratch’s only appearance as a non-hostile character is right after Zane introduces him at the end of the first game. American Nightmare shows that the rumors about Wake changed Scratch into a psychopathic murderer. Alan Wake 2 retcons or otherwise changes that, stating that Scratch was never a separate entity, but just Alan‘s own darkness. So however one looks at this character, it’s obvious he was never intended as a good guy. He was either just one of Zane‘s mistakes or simply Alan‘s darkness.

@@Hawaiian_Pizza_Enjoyer well yeah I never wanted to imply he was MEANT to be a good guy, I just think they had a great alternative route for if they ever wanted Scratch to be his own character

@@saucefreakystyle I truly believe he was meant to be a good guy. The Diver Zane wouldn't want to hurt Alan; he might've created Scratch to keep Alan alive in the real world somehow. But then the rumors came and he was changed through the power of the lake

@@LSK2K I kinda agree, it didn’t bother me playing her bit, but after 13 years of not knowing what happened to Alan, her side took a lot away from his story. Which is why after beating it I felt incomplete, and once again have to wait for DLC to get a more in depth ending.

@@brianoconnor9105 I played this game back in 2010, knew it was special, knew it had potential. Fast forward to 2016 saw some hints at an Alan Wake 2 in Quantum Break, got a bit excited. Then 2019 came around and CONTROL released. It was and is a visual spectacle, a marvel. But not only that, it blended visuals, storytelling and gameplay in a nice way. Saw some more hints at an Alan Wake 2 sequel and got a bit excited, then the AWE DLC released and I was mind blown by it. I was watching the meetup between Alan and Tom nearly everyday. The effort put behind it, it felt like Jesse was breaking through the barrier of darkness and peering into something deep down just to see this faint meetup. After the reveal trailer we got in 2021 I was sold on the game. Then they showed off Saga and how not only they blackwashed her for ESG purposes but gave her around 60% of the campaign and nearly all the advertising also for the same purpose. A classic case of bait and switch. I'm disappointed in Sam Lake. He allowed identity politics and ESG scores influence his vision. I pirated the game out of fear that the game won't be about Alan. I was not mistaken. My purchase won't matter in the long run but I won't be supporting this.

I thought Saga's inclusion was well done. And while I was eager to get to playing as Alan Wake, I think her perspective was good for people who are new to the series. I was a bit bummed that this version of Mr. Scratch really didn't appear. I guess it makes sense since his body was destroyed in American Nightmare, but it would have still been cool to see this personality surface in whomever he possessed.
