It’s cold and perfect weather to sneak in a short training hike carrying about 17lbs through the woods of Amagansett. My pal Leo keeps me company. It’s a good day. Hope yours is, too.

Gansett Girl Hikes The AT - 2025 Thru-Hike. Doreen and I hike in Cedar Point County Park

A cold and beautiful day for a scenic hike in Cedar Point Vounty Park with Leo and Doreen. I’ve a lot to do before I head back to the trail, but hiking as much as I can is a must. It’s Long Island, folks, so the trails are flat and pretty easy. But they certainly are beautiful and I love where I live - especially in the off season when the town is ours. Yup. It’s my final day of my November portion of my thru-hike and I saved the “best” for last: It’s Lehigh Gap Day. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Barbara for many things but, in particular, for hiking with me on this iconic climb. Going forward, my plan is to resume my hike in March, either in Harpers Ferry, WV, or at Springer Mountain in Georgia. It has been such a privilege to hike and I...

Today’s hike from Smith Gap Road to Wind Gap was a lot of fun - I chatted with other hikers, and enjoyed a fairly tame day of hiking the ridge. And when I completed the hike, I was reunited with Barbara who joined me for the completion of this part of my journey. Life is good! I like your beach music for 15 degrees! Usually use my weighted blanket for weight when training as well. Dressed appropriately does create plenty of heat and I have to be real careful not to sweat. Sunshine and no wind makes all the difference. Leo sure is having a good time!
@@cyndirowland7873 Leo lives for a good time. Leaving him will be the hardest part of the hike but also the absolute right decision.
Haven't you been thru -hiking on the AT in Pennsylvania heading south so you should be in hiking shape and if you're not you probably never will be.
@@eddiemathis412 that’s hilarious - thanks for the laugh
Some cold training session! Great job! Keep it up 🎉🎉
@@stefanoGTA I enjoy it. I’m trying to get the training in!
I feel the same. No elevation here for training either…I keep using the local gym stairmaster 🙄
That’s always a good option. I do that sometimes too but it’s not my favorite.
@ mine either!! Too many eyes on my sweaty self and not enough 80s music to make it enjoyable 😂

@@lisarana3566 - I hope to learn. My thru-hike adventure is in 2026.
Only those that have experienced it can understand the exhilaration of arriving in town after many days of backpacking!
That is so true.
Absolutely gorgeous views, so nicely put together my friend! Love it!
@@ervinslens Thanks so much!
Yes!! The LMNT chocolates are great hot! And they don’t taste as salty strong as the others. Such a great evening drink and you’re getting in those electrolytes!
@@deborahhill3105 The non-chocolate taste salty to me so I need them more diluted.
Stunning views! We camped at Hammonasset Campground, CT in September, and I think we had the opposite view from the beach. Meaning we were looking out at Long Island. 😁 I turned 50 last year, and could not agree with you more about zip-ups vs pull-overs! I'm gonna get sweating hot on a hike, even in winter, and need to unzip!
@@stephaniegaddis1716 Too funny! I’m still on the fence on the zip vs pullover
Very nice length of trail -- great reprieve from all the rocks! Those green balls are hedge apples aka osage orange. Squirrels love their seeds but that's about all that will eat them.
It really was. Thanks for the info!
Hi Lisa, such a beautiful day! Love hikes by the lake. Cheers! 😊
Thanks, I’m really enjoying the hikes on the bluffs. Eastern Long Island is blessed to have the Atlantic Ocean to our south and Gardiner’s Bay to our north.
Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for following along!🎉
Good luck with doing that! I've done the Appalachian Trail and a lot of other trails and it's very difficult to stop and smell the roses It just is I will often like all day with almost no breaks especially if I'm by myself if I'm with a friend or other through hikers on occasion I can definitely stop and enjoy But of late I've been doing long trips alone and I find myself just walking all day even when I'm beyond tired I keep pushing It's a hard cycle to break and I've tried too ... Without a whole lot of success especially alone
It is definitely a challenge! But one I am looking forward to
Rocks ugh! THE worst. Isn't a place to sit such a luxury?!! I like your slackpack strategy. I would thru hike the whole thing supported by a friend in an RV if that were possible!
It is possible! There are people who have done most of the trail with someone (albeit a very committed someone) who is willing to support you with an RV. I like slack packing, but I am also looking forward to the more traditional hike ahead of me. Best of luck to you and thanks for following along!
I'm glad to hear you talk about the struggle with cold sleeping pads -- same here! When it's cold I sleep in my Frog Togs rain gear -- really helps to keep my body heat in.
My Nemo Extreme is solid and warm. Paired with my gossamer gear foam pad, it works well
Can you make s little morning reminder sticker you would see every day, to remember to slow down and enjoy the journey?
I will incorporate something like this into my daily routine.
Hello ma'am, Your content quality is Amazing☀ 🎆 I hope proper optimization of your video SEO and promotion on top social media sites will bring many views and subscribers.
For me it would be all about enjoying the trail, not worrying about how many miles I do. Would I like to complete the whole AT and be able to say I'm an "official" Thru Hiker? Sure, but not at the expense of taking the time to enjoy a view, listen to sounds, or spend time with someone I met on the trail in an enjoyable conversation.
I totally agree. I really think I can do both. We shall see
@@lisarana3566 You got this!
You’re not going to get shot by a hunter on the AT
That is most likely true, but I was adhering to local regulations that said to wear orange, and it was specific as to how much and where. As it turned out, it was no big deal as the vest was totally light, and the hat was warm!
Thanks for all those thoughts. I’m the same in many ways and always need to hear it again and again. I’m much older than you and still have not learned those lessons of “hike your own hike!” Take in every view, stop and talk to others, go your pace, listen to your heart, and you will climb Katahdin! And I will try to do the same. 😊 Signage
I hope to see you out there, Signage!
@ yes that would be great.
We sound very similar!! It is a HUGE concern for me too when I start trail - to just “be” and get where I get….after 30+ years of making lists & goals daily…how do you drop it to make the most of a quest like this? I am hoping the AT will assist in the teaching of this lesson as long as I listen to the trail.
It’s part of my why - not the whole why and I’m not sure I know the entire why - but it’s part of it. Stay in touch - I know you are leaving before me but our paths may cross.
Let it go, let it goooo! Make what you REALLY want to do your new goals -- "today I will take a 20 minute lunch at a beautiful view spot -- I will take 10 photos of things I see that inspire and amuse me -- I will plan my camp spot to arrive early enough for a leisure dinner and relaxing" etc! Don't miss the best part of the adventure and that is being free to just BE!
Thanks for that! I'm trying to embrace that mindset - that’s why I don’t have a “I must be done by” date.
Three years later, the trail is still in my soul. If my body holds up, the moon is some house, and Jupiter and Mars and Mercury align or misalign or whatever they are supposed to do to reach favorable conditions (in other words, when life events allow me to do so), I want to do it again. 🙂 FYI - I turned 67 on my thru-hike so at 60, you're just a baby. 😀😀Perserverance and determination are key. Bonus: They are extremely ultralight!
I think the prep is fun, too. I will endeavor to let the trail unfold to me in whatever way that happens.
Can’t wait for the next installments. You’re doing great!
@@deborahhill3105 It should be an adventure!
The blow downs are most likely due to Hurricane Helen that came through the end of September. You will see lots more in NC, Tn , Va
Signage, did you hike in 07 with Calamity Jane??
Great job! When I did it in 07 it was still a Super Fund. The zinc mining made it look like you were on the moon. Everything was black and dead. It was very eerie and when I did it the next time everything was green. It was an unbelievable difference in the two hiked.
Really enjoyed your video! Have been curious about trail conditions since the recent tornadoes and hurricane so thank you for sharing all the trail footage. I would imagine it's a bit lonely since you're so far ahead of the bubble. Best of luck -- will be following!
