Spoons usually work the best. I've caught shad on all types of spoons. The Toby spoon is my most successful. Clone Lures are good too. Surface plugs also work well for the bigger shad. A steady medium retrieve works the best for me.

Thanks! I agree with you, 7-10 g is ideal for most applications. But if there's no strong current and wind isn't an issue, then go as light as you can. The lure's action will look more natural. Sometimes if the lure is too light for the rod, you can't impart a nice action, because the tip doesn't bend/flex. If the lure is too heavy, for the rod, then more effort is required by you to work the lure properly.

Hard to beat the Zombie Small Fry (65mm) lures. You can do almost anything to the lure and it will still swim well. Passion Sprats (made by Passion Baits ) is deadly as well. 2.5" and 3" Mcarthy jerk minnows and paddletails. I have found pearl, river prawn and chartreuse speckle colours to be very effective.

Hi, it was a 1.5oz jig head. It was a south westerly bowing, so the wind blew from behind and helped with casting distance.

Hi Glenn, full tackle set up is in the description. The stradic is a bit small for the rod, but I was using it instead of my other reel, because it has thin braid, so I can cast the paddletail further.

Some of the other Kingfish species you can catch on bait. Yes persist, you will get rewarded! It's on the upper south coast (I won't say anymore😆)
