I would love to have a better idea if the market is going to go up, or down. What advances can the UK make in the steel industry to give it the competitive advantage it needs while gaining growth?

It would be really great to have some of the art and images of the institute across the years reflected in our new policies. As a creative, I try and incorporate images to.firstly generate interest, and then help tell a story. This is a great initiative.

Really interesting points Chris, particularly acknowledging the wider benefits of a thriving industrial sector. I agree that the low carbon energy story is the important thing from here, until we can decarbonise much more broadly we should be encouraging demand reduction rather than incentivising energy use. Although I am nervous about Hydrogen and the long timescales involved with carbon capture at scale. I think it will be part of the story but, as I heard Scottish Power Chief Exec say earlier this year, (my paraphrase) 'we have a solution to decarbonisation so we need to electrify, electrify, electrify' - rather than wait for Hydrogen to compete on cost, or on carbon. Great video though!

I fully agree with your view that steel is special and that the future of steel should be a national strategic priority. To what extent do your comments also apply to other foundation industries (basic chemicals, ceramics, glass, paper, cement)? These industries face similar challenges in capital and energy intensive processes, long investment cycles and national government support for competitors in other countries. Would you say there are potential benefits for these industries working together, with expert technical support, to identify and address common challenges, and that encouraging, enabling and supporting this should be national industrial strategy?
