Great analysis. That was the best theory I could think of without having to change the ending of the series, without changing facts or decisions of the characters. This theory can indeed be contested, but it is plausible and could be possible without changing any event. And it would certainly be a surprising ending that no one expected while it would be better accepted by the fan community

Robb called the Northern army when Ned was taken hostage, BEFORE Ned was killed. Ned Stark started the war when he tried to stop Joffrey's coronation. Another important point is that Stannis would fight to take the crown from Joffrey and Ned Stark swore to defend House Baratheon, by oath he would need to fight with Stannis against Joffrey. Stannis as the legitimate King and could cancel Ned's sentence to go to the Wall... The war would happen anyway.

ned started the war when he staged the coup, he endangered cersei and her kids and he also wanted to pass the crown to stannis, and renly would also stake his claim so the war would happen anyway and the north already fought the whispering wood before Ned died. So if ned was alive and we assume he bends the knee to make peace, the lannisters would still have no choice but to keep Ned and sansa as hostages which robb & cat aren't cool with, and also somehow make sure Ned doesn't retaliate and enforce the other baratheon's claim to the throne. If jamie was caught, they would choose to trade sansa instead of ned because he's more of a threat, which ned would also support because he loves his kids. And then the North would still be galvanized against the lannisters, and the lannisters would still have one stark hostage, but this time the lannisters would have jaime back and robbs bannermen would be mad that jamie walks free. if ned had never staged the coup (& by proxy talk to cersei), joffrey would inherit the crown as planned, Tyrion would return to kings landing w/ bronn, ned would be hand to joff and make peace with the lannisters (if he's smart), then the north, stannis, and renly would stay put and joffrey would marry sansa. Joffrey would still be a terrible person, but at least Ned could do damage control [Cersei could've had actual kids and at least an amicable relationship with bobby b if he wasn't so neglectful towards his family]

Yes, of course Tywin was the general who won the war against the North and against Stannis' invasion (with Tyrion's help). Joffrey was a teenager with no military experience so he wisely chose Tywin to be his Hand. A king doesn't need to do everything alone.

1 - About Sansa; he saw her as a daughter whose father tried to steal the crown and whose brother was at war, torturing her was so he could attack a Stark family. Obviously Joffrey had a psychopathic streak and I'm not defending that, I just tried to interpret the situation from the character's point of view. 2 - About trying to condemn the crowd to death by pie in the face; He was a spoiled, arrogant and vengeful teenager; besides being a king. I think the decision he made fits the character well, anything different would not seem like the character. Remembering that this same crowd almost killed Sansa and almost... no one there was innocent. 3 - About war; He was a teenager, obviously had no military experience, but a king doesn't need to do everything alone, do you agree? He wisely chose Tywin Lannister as his Hand to face Robb Stark and then Tyrion to win Blackwater

Ok, choose who was the best monarch then. How about Danaerys who followed the will of her father the mad king and burned the city, or how about Tomem who entered the city to a religious madman, Cercei maybe? Or Robert who ruled drunk and alongside whores

@@rai3496 Renly would have been the best monarch as he had a good Council with him and grains from Reach which would have kept the Realm happy and fed. Renly was also pretty considerate. Robert too was a good monarch if you think about it. As Jorah said "Smallfolk doesn't care who rule over them as long as they have food in there bellies". While Robert was a drunk and whoremonger, he kept the Realm in peace and happy for over two decades which is almost unheard of in Westeros (except the minor Greyjoy Rebellion which was quickly squashed without much damage to mainland Westeros).
