Yes, they say the heat can cause the mustard gas to form, but i waited for e.g. more than 12 months to work over my cold wax pieces with encaustic and still could smell the toxic smell of cold wax.. they say it is the linseed and turps or both, but as you said, use the right protective equipment and it is fine...it is causing headaches though, probably because i work a long time on a piece with heat, or depending on the size you are working on/with. To me, if experts say no, you can't, that is when i do try to show i can. But, with the right masks and filters, NO problem, but the experts know most people don't bother about that specific part of keeping safe. I finished about 56 pieces of encaustic in 18 months time for a huge exhibition during covid lockdown, and less than 20% had been just cold.wax and 5% combo. So, take care and there will be no problem. I only do small pulieces nowadays, because lockdowns ruined our economy, and encaustic bleached wax have to be imported which influence asking price tremendously. I make my own coldwax as well, but unbleached, which give you a less bright colour, but never the less pretty.

The only thing I've heard against melting cold wax his heating the turpentine in the cold wax could create mustard gas. Whether that's true or not idk

I am really enjoying your videos I am a beginner at using encaustics, I only have Watermixable oil paints can you use them with encaustic medium, do you have to wait for the oil paint to dry before fixing with heat. I also have Sennelier oil pastels that I am going to tryout with encaustic.
