This exciting group of sisters and their mother entertained a very responsive audience on the Cheynes IV whaler, at the old Whaling Station at Frenchman's Bat near Albany in Friday 5 July, 2024. I believe most of the songs they sung were originals, written by Tiff, Gemma and Shanaya Stewart.

The Backlot Trio sang at the Albany Town Hall as part of the Albany International Folk 'n' Shanty Festival on Thursday, July 4, 2024. Unfortunately one of the Trio had to leave the Festival early and so a replacement was used in the last song on this video, from the Albany Club on Saturday.

The gentle Gordon Lightfoot song. This has been one of my favourite songs since the mid seventies. The backing is a baritone ukulele.

I wrote this song back in 1971. It meant something to me at the time. A couple of years later I payed it to a friend in London who changed it slightly to suit him and he kept it in his repertoire for years. I am surprised it hasn't aged! It's still as awful as when I wrote it.

Great work Lizard, very entertaining. Got some good laughs, particularly during your funny poems and when you said "This next song is not one of my favourites"! Are you trying to play an F during Biminy? One of the notes in the chord doesn't sound right, or it is being muted perhaps? A few songs might work well with a capo - changing the key slightly (a lot of your songs are in C) and also changing the tone of your ukulele.

@@3rdalbum Thanks for your comments. Yes, the string did get muted occasionally. I was used to playing it on a tenor and have trouble squeezing my fingers together on the baritone. I heeded what you said and capoed on the 5th fret and it rang clear. And brings it into the tonal range of the tenor, as well as the fingering. Your comments have helped and I appreciate them.

What people failed to realise is that cars need to be parked. Narrow streets meant that trams occupied road space but parked cars occupy MORE road space. Leading to a great increase in congestion. All very well when only the rich had cars but once everyone had cars this unforeseen problem meant that the promise of car travel became a lie.

Fun fact The tram lines in Sydney and Brisbane are mostly still there, they were just paved over. I worked on the new Gorge st line and we cut through the buried lines a few times while cutting trenches for services.

I think one or two trams from Australia now are at MOTAT museum in Auckland and still run at times, one is a Kitson steam tram, would be good on a Cold winters day, toasty warm with the boiler nearby.

And return nuclear power stations for clean, affordable energy for centuries. The nuclear waste? No problem. Dig deep trenches in inner-city, gentrified dumps like Erskinville and PeterSham. Only Marxists and lesbian feminists dwell there so who cares!

Thank you for this Graham , my Dad would've been on that train ( in the 3rd carriage from the front ) & I remember that day well , thankfully Dad managed to get the earlier train that morning & he arrived just minutes before his normal train arrived in Parramatta so when he arrived at work in Sydney - everyone was amazed that he'd survived his trip to work that day ; I'm so glad that we didn't lose him that day.

Trainspotters used to dress like Queens Park Rangers fans. Duffel coats, lace up boots and fishing hats. Still, that was 50 or so years back now! Yes, and thermos, sandwiches and notepad.

Well done Graham. I've said for as long as I can remember "our hobby is often as, and in many cases, more interesting than the topic". Most enthusiasts are focus solely on the trams and very few take an interest in its people. Trams create passion and many people are entirely devoted to them. "Life Is About One Thing and One Thing Only" is a common philosophy throughout the hobby. Yes; "gunzel" is a term of endearment for all those interested in trams (and other forms of transport). Once it was more of a put down (a bit like the term "anorak") but that's changed over the years into a general term of endearment. "Anorak" is more of a UK term. The equivalent in the USA is "foamer". Keep up the good work!

TramPainter Shenandoah was a chief of the Iroquois people, the Oneida from Canada and New York state. He fought for the American colonists in the Revolutionary war, although most Native Americans fought for the British. He led between 250 and 300 men into battle and would be at least a short colonel these days. After the war, President Jackson exiled all Native Americans westward to Kansas and Oklahoma, regardless of their loyalties. This included the Oneida and their six foot six tall chief. The Treaty of Fort Stanwyx decreed they all go, no exceptions. A French fur trapper wrote this song after being separated from one of the daughters of the tribe. Because of the way the French had previously treated his nation in Canada, he was reluctant to sanctify their union. Shenandoah lived until the nineteenth century, to the age of 106. The song gained popularity among river boat men and then sea going sailors. It is a terrible indictment on racist white men in USA, Canada, Australia and many other English speaking nations, yet remains one of the most beautiful melodies and lyrics ever.
