Lifetime of Listening #42 - 2013 - 52 Albums/Years/Weeks
Episode 42, 2013, a bad year...and a great album to balance out the upset. UK post-punk originators with a trash-to-treasure makeover that might be their best album of the 21st century. As ever, quick mentions for some other alt/indie LPs from this year, and I pay tribute to a few much-missed family members. Be warned...there's as much "lifetime" as "listening" in this episode....

Celluloid Heroes: 12 Great Movies About Punk Rock (1978-2020)
Переглядів 38 тис.19 годин тому
A dozen great movies about punk rock, from the height of the '70s UK punk explosion right up to the present day. Taking in punk/hardcore music, culture, fashion, and politics, these movies portray everything from the most negative of stereotypes, to punk's inspirational activist side...from nihilism, violence and tribalism, to positivity, empowerment and youthful rebellion. Covering a range of ...

Celebrating a late-career high from a counter-cultural icon in this episode. A dauntingly big record, yes, but subtly meditative lyrical themes permeate this collection of spectacular rock barnburners. I turned 40, a milestone year, so an indulgent selection (maybe) for the more mature listener! A couple of other great indie/alt LPs to talk about along the way, too. THIS EPISODE...2012, Neil Yo...

2011, and a serious record from a serious artist. Themes of nationhood, imperialism, patriotism...the plight of those caught up in violent conflict, and how war has shaped our world, from the past right up to the present day. The album of the year for many, and rightly so. As ever, expect mentions for a few other great alt/indie LPs from this year, alongside some personal reflections. THIS EPIS...

Indie Rock goes Dad Rock? Not sure, but this, my 2010 album pick, does fuse grown-up melancholy, artful arrangements and anthemic hooks like no other. Also this year, an interesting stylistic detour by the OG Heartland Rocker. All told, a grand start to the new decade... My significant alt-centric record of 2009? A jagged noise-punk scorcher with under-the-surface pop hooks and uniquely skewed lyrics. Only one other top album contender in episode 38, but the usual assortment of reminiscences/tributes to the events and people of 2009 that constitute my Lifetime Of Listening. Take a trip with me... 37! 2008, and checking the record of one of the last true post-punk innovators. A great late-period release from this iteration of the band, narrowly beating out a timely album from some US newcomers who put a uniquely soulful spin on the post-punk template. Episode 36, and a hidden gem of an alt/indie LP is my personal pick for 2007, a crazy year for me with some big life "events" to deal with. Ciao, in 1989 i was a punk, personally i was more of a techno punk, i was 20 years old in wolfsburg in germany, we had some problems with this fucking nazi skinheads, but to remember of this is great, to be a punk is not like vogue and clothes as a style, this is in our heart Like the Rock'n'Roll Generation and later the Beatnicks and the Hippies in the late 1960's i love this, and with 55 i am a Techno-Punk anyway, so Nazis fuck off..

Sorry, you missed badly with Dogs in Space, it literally defined the Melbourne punk scene featuring a host of Aussie music, art and fashion legends , not least of whom was the great Ollie Olsen who sadly passed away this weekend. Australians who lived through this era understand the cultural importance of this film.

Um, not so much. I think it's entirely possible for a film to have cultural and/or scene significance (and I agree that it does) whilst still not being a particularly great movie. That's Dogs In Space in a nutshell, for me. D

There was a recent British movie, don't remember the title, but it was about a young kid from a broken family who had to try to look after his younger sister and earn some money driving his dad's taxi, and befriended a posh girl who lived a second life as a young punk fan. It was quite a sweet film really. The kid kept running into a fictional Joe Strummer, who became a kind of mentor. Ultimately a feel good film set in punk era London.

I never really listened to Wire much. I should. I played Ramada Inn in the car the other day, just to see if I’d missed anything with your “dad rock” pick from last week. Very quickly my wife and I both agreed: this is very good. A slice of Neil that I was wrong to skip. I do have trouble hearing it without singing “The River” by Sir Bruce. Really sorry to hear about how painful 2013 was for you and your family.

I thought I had a crummy 2013, but it was nothing compared to this. Your bravery in discussing it publicly is commendable. I seem to recall that you mentioned that this was going to be a tough year for you in a previous conversation, and I now see why. Lovely tribute, though. As for music... I literally found nothing in the 2013 release list that I enjoyed extensively while new (passive listens to Neko and Arcade Fire), and nothing I've since discovered..... Unti now. As we've talked about prior, my knowledge of Wire pre-LOL was basically side one of Pink Flag, but I'm getting very into them from your influence (Send was an excellent recommendation), so I am excited to spin this.

Hi Darren! That was the year my dad died so I can totally understand why you'd rather not go there. There seemed to be more new music that connected with me in 2013 than in the previous few years though. Loud Like Love by Placebo, The Raven That Refused To Sing by Steven Wilson, and The Argument by Grant Hart came close but my favourite is Sunbather by Deafhaven. It's a fantastic blend of extreme metal, shoegaze and post rock.

Cheers Alan. I thought long and hard about how far to go, how much to say...and in the end I felt I had to at least try and deal with it. The fact that there was a musical link (all those 7" singles!) gave me a way into talking about it, and it got a little bit easier after that. D

What a terrible loss. Two wonderful people but under very different circumstances. Very sorry. Sounds like your uncle hid his dark thoughts possibly all too well. Which is apparently not uncommon but must be tough to come to grips with, as you don't get the chance to talk about that stuff and offer comfort or perhaps get a little better understanding. I dunno man... seems brutally hard though. Well... ehm, anyway: Sunbather by Deafheaven, Modern Vampires of the City by Vampire Weekend and the return of Crime and the City Solution with American Twilight (yes!) were some musical highlights for me. The last one I didn't actually hear until about 7 years later though (cheat!). Still, it's a very cool record that doesn't disappoint or tarnish their legacy. Like the mbv record. David Eugene Edwards (ex 16 HP) participating was a nice bonus for me. Still on the fence about the Knife's Shaking the Habitual but it is very interesting. Some of the time at least. Man, I really should check out post 2000 Wire... I did listen to their first "comeback" (late 80s - early 90s) stuff, though not extensively. But so the band never stopped being great. I believe it!

    • @discellany
      @discellany День тому

It was hard. The thing I didn't really touch on in the video, was that they died within about 3 or 4 weeks of each other, too...my uncle first, then my auntie. It hit my other, older uncle hardest of all...losing his baby brother first, and then his wife, all in the space of a month. Just an awful, awful time for everyone in the family. My uncle did have a darker side, I know. He separated from his wife maybe ten years before his death, but it seemed like he had got himself back on track, and in a much better place. I think my Nan's death a few years before his suicide had left him kind of "untethered"...she was his anchor after his Dad died when he was so young, and I think it affected him far far more deeply than anyone could have realised. Anyway, yes...I'll not be going quite this personal after this year. Oversharing isn't really my style (even in a series about my own life!), but this was something I really had to acknowledge. Cheers, D

A heartfelt episode and a fitting tribute to your Uncle. I really must get round to trying the Wire albums you have covered. 2013 was a livelier year music wise for me than 2012. Honourable mentions go to: Trouble will find me (The National); AM (Arctic Monkeys); Holy Fire (Foals); If you wait (London Grammar); Weight of your love (Editors); Inform-Educate-Entertain (Public Service Broadcasting); Pale Green Ghosts (John Grant). Of those PSB came closest to winning, but I already have them marked for 2016. Instead I chose a debut album by a band that only lasted 2 albums. Coincidentally an album that bleeds raw emotion and pain, but of the heart . If you leave, by Daughter

Great list! Got yourself a new subscriber! You're so spot on about Suburbia; that mosh pit scene with the girl in the pink dress has Corman written all over it. A great film otherwise though, it'd be great if Spheeris someday went back to her roots.

Really brilliant video. Great to see that its blown up too. I consider myself a bit of a pop culture junky...but I was not aware of a few of these of these. I cant think of anything you've missed.

Thanks, mate. There's gaps sure, but I covered as many of the issues and facets as I could in the course of a <30 minute video, and I'm very happy with how it turned out. Lots of "Where's Swindle/Rude Boy/Breaking Glass?" in the comments, but you can't please everybody! Cheers, D

Yeah...must have been a year or two back, I think. I enjoyed it quite a bit. A nice inter-generational take on the role of punk energy/community as a driver of gender equality. Cheers, D

I have five of these ("Rock 'n' Roll High School," "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains," "Smithereens," "Repo Man," "The Return of the Living Dead") and have seen "Jubilee" and "Wild Zero." Would love to see or even own the others. Although this list didn't cover documentaries or concert films, I wouldn't mind seeing a separate list for those. I would hope it would include such films as "Urgh! A Music War," "X - The Unheard Music," and probably a double feature tie for "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle" / "The Filth and the Fury."

The Internet Archive got hacked a couple weeks ago, last I knew they still had it down. Most alarming they removed 1984. I'm going to assume of some fans of the West. Until tgen You can find a lot if these movies on Tubi, FreeVee, Plex .. and a little patience and creativity you often can find films on here. Reddit also is a good resource. Also, by the time you got to Green Room I knew that besides knowledge of movies, you know your music . Wise warnjng to steer clear of the fascist side of punk. I'm likely your age, thiugh Uacross the pond abd just this past weekend a friend spotted a couple ic those kosers putting up flyers. The friend followed them, ripping each down. They were completely oblivious, eventually they hopped in their car and took off. Poor guys, we may be a bit slower and achy, but we still have tools to fight fascism. I thank the punks who came before me and those of my era to give me a lifelong home of sorts. It was how I met my first love made friends in new city, then college, snd all these years later my extended network of friends and acquaintances. I also learned valuable tools , like my ability to navigate a crowd and to spot a nazi, even off duty ones and ones who are in rhe government. HCxNC

"Hard Core Logo" is my favorite punk film. If you haven't seen it, I totally recommend it. It's a mockumentary, but it's played straight and it works so well.

I've only seen a couple of these films. The only one I found highly enjoyable was 'Repo Man' (also Alex Cox's 'Highway Patrolman'). I'm not a fan of 'empowerment' or 'feel good' films and have generally stopped watching most films since 2010.

Fun list. Couple ones I’ve been aware of remotely but haven’t tracked down; a couple new to me. I’m guessing I’m roughly the same age as you so I saw a few of these in the theater, a bunch on cable/vhs. But Repo Man, I was in Boston when it was one of like 3 cities in the US that it opened in and I went in knowing nothing about it. I went back 3 times, dragging new friends each time. Also, …Fabulous Stains isn’t hard to find these days. It’s been released on BuRay and a good print shows up on streaming services. Great movie.

My favourite punk film is 1986's Dogs in Space by Richard Lowenstein. Fantastic look at the Little Bands scene of Melbourne in the late 70's, and also a look into Australian sharehouse culture that he would later delve deeper into in the film He Died With a Falafel In His Hand. Dogs in Space has a brilliant soundtrack, and also features Michael Hutchins acting as the lead.
