Swallows and Amazons | 50th Anniversary | Aerial View | Windermere Jetty Museum
A 50th anniversary celebration of the 1974 Swallows and Amazons film was held at the Windermere Jetty Museum on the 29th and 30th of June 2024.
The event featured screenings of the film, talks with original cast members, original memorabilia and props on display and of course the two dinghies from the film!
Original film Amazon and Mavis (the dinghy that inspired Amazon) were both available for visitors to take out sailing over the weekend, while original film Swallow was on display ashore, as she is awaiting restoration ready to also be available for hire (donations welcome!).
To learn more about The Arthur Ransome Society, to donate to the dinghy restorations or to arrange a sail in one of the dinghies, visit:

This video looks back at a brilliant week on board Tallulah, a 44ft, 2008 Luke Powell Pilot Cutter. We sailed around Falmouth Bay, Carrick Roads, the Helford, River Fal, St Mawes and Carne Beach, in a range of conditions from a flat calm all the way to a full gale. The plan was to sail amongst the tall ships parade of sail, however this was cancelled due to Storm Betty bringing F8-9 winds along...

In June 2023, while waiting for our van to be repainted, we took the car and our Tentbox Lite on a 10-day road trip from Hampshire up to Pembrokeshire and Snowdonia. With a mix of hiking, swimming, biking and boating, we explored Wales' beautiful west coast, of which we have tried to show as much as possible in this video. Our main conclusions are that a) Wales is stunningly beautiful and well ...

    Superb job. Took me back 55 plus years when I built a Mirror dinghy from kit with my dear Dad. Raced her and cruised in her. Superb dinghy. £75 then for the kit including sails. Paint and varnish extra. Hoping you will have many happy times in this wonderfully restored boat. Well done. 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

    Sorry if i sound stupid but this is very similar to the fireball correct? Im working on one now and really could use some help with the rigging. I always sailed sunfish and hobir cats so this is really new to me! That boat is beautiful by the way! Im in process of fixing some seams and painting my whole boat inside and out!

    I am the son of the penultimate owner (R.I.P.) of the Kalea, purchased in 1991 and resold to the current owner Mr. Tim Blackman in 2019. I had the honor of being in command of this wonderful sailing ship from 2004 to 2019, the year in which this masterpiece was sold by my family due to new needs that concerned our personal affairs. The yacht was a little low maintenance, but still sailed superbly. This is why Tim, trying it sailing in the Mediterranean, fell in love with it and moved it to the U.K. and brought it back to its former glory. Thank you Tim for taking on the baton of this wonderful story. I am deeply moved and I feel that dad is watching you with emotion and joy sailing from up there. The same emotion and pride that I feel, having saved this masterpiece from oblivion, handing it over to Tim who is still able to navigate and convey emotions. Thanks Tim, I love you and look forward to hugging you again.

    Hello! Thank you for sharing your work with us! You did a an amazing job planning and then building the box! I have a question however: does your trangia get enough oxygen for burning in the position it is? I have noticed that my trangia is “choking” sometimes even though it is not in a box. Probably in my case the reason is that I am not using original trangia pans etc and they cover the top section of the stove with very little space left for creating sufficient drag.

    • @CorinNelsonSmith
      @CorinNelsonSmith 2 місяці тому

      Thanks! Never had an issue with the Trangia choking, but I did get a bit fed up with the lack of control using meths as fuel, so switched to the gas burner option.

      The “classic” Merlin like 3387 has fairly minimal controls compared with the latest boats - they have an elaborate system for mast raking one continuous line for raking fore or aft, but a complete rat’s nest under the foredeck to keep the shroud and forestay tensions correct. But, lovely responsive dinghy to sail…

    Nice job corin (interesting name). Ive just bought a _solo_ (which is very similar to your gp) and noticed the 2 rectangular holes in the transom. What the hell are they? Im assuming theyre to remove water from the cockpit. However, on yours, you seem to have them permanently sealed. Mine were flaps that were attached to a bungee located in the cockpit.

    • @CorinNelsonSmith
      @CorinNelsonSmith 4 місяці тому

      Yes they are transom drains to allow water out of the cockpit. No idea why mine were screwed on so I removed them and replaced with bungee retained ones as you describe. See 10:20 onwards for fabrication of new adjustable flaps and 13:38 onwards for a picture of the bungee holding the flaps on.

      Lolololoololololololololol I think we are in the same boat, pardon the pun. I just bought a _Solo_ which is very similar to Corin's GP. Like you, it needs alot of work...... and I mean ALOT! Cracked (in multiple places) rudder, separated gunwales (both sides), rotten mast step, water ingress in a few places, all sheets need replacing, and the trailer and trolley need tlc! I live in a van in the bush and most of the work I'll be doing will be in open space in a friend's backyard. I'll be posting crappy vids of my progress. How is your rebuild going?
