Portugal
Приєднався 6 січ 2021
Thank you for visiting and subscribing to our channel.
We, Sonia and Zuzana, live on a beautiful quinta (farm) in the mountains of Central North Portugal.
We bought our farm in May 2019 and have been living here permanently since February 2020.
We grow most of our vegetables, keep animals for food and grazing and trying to make and do all we can ourselves. We are adopting permaculture principles with local traditions and the knowledge we have gained as children on our grandparents' land.
We love baking, growing and problem solving as well as the simple lifestyle we have adopted.
Enjoy our journey

SLOW autumnal living on our 7 acres homestead in Portugal | Mushroom foraging
Autumn is here and with it the time is slowing down; even if only in our minds. Despite slowing down we have been quite busy on our homestead here in central Portugal. Autumn brings a lot of work before the winter but also a lot of fun and surprises. We took Woody on his first proper walk outside our homestead and despite his reservations he seemed to enjoy new scenery and smells. He is still a bit shy boy and loves the big sisters the most but we need to train him to become more content with the wide world as there are changes lurking around the corner. Cutting first wood, lighting up the first fire of the season, finding the first mushrooms... Despite the fact it's autumn, there are many firsts as well. Every year, we get ever so excited when mushroom season comes. We feel like children when stumbling upon our first find. It's liberating to feel like a child.
Slow living is a must, not only for us but for all. Stop and stare, breathe in and smell the earth, exhale and smile. We all need to slow down.
We both hope you enjoy this episode with no voice over.
Much love

OUR WORST NIGHTMARE (did we manage to escape?) WATCHING PORTUGAL BURN

Fires, fires and more fires! Our worst nightmare has become the theme of this week's video which is different to our usual ones as some of you might know half of Portugal has been burning in the last week. We suffered the same only a couple of years ago and the trauma is still very much alive within us. That time we decided to leave the land. And this time we stayed. It was almost as terrifying...

I feel that growing your own food, although it does require certain effort, is one of the best activities and skills one can acquire. And as everything it does need your effort, knowledge, mistakes and successes go hand in ha...
STRUCK WITH A STRANGE BUG (when we fall ill life goes on at our homestead)

We have been struck with a strange bug these past two weeks which has disabled our progress on the land and in the garden. We managed to escape any illness since we moved to Portugal. However, this summer it finally got to us both. We haven't felt so ill for a very long time. And whatever it was behaved very strangely. Neither of us remember being so poorly. But the life on our homestead must g...

We have made ourselves busy once again these past couple of weeks. And this time it was well worth the effort as we got to test the fruits of our labour right after finishing the project. Summers in Portugal can be brutal; temperatures can rise up to 40 degrees Celsius and there is nowhere to hide from the heat of the sun. Even inside the house it is quite uncomfortable despite the insulation. ...

It was impossible to work outside with cement and tile glue so we continued with some other little jobs. I have finally managed to bake babka, a cake recipe I was eyeing for a while. Lovely video! Thanks for sharing such magical times both in the farm and the countryside.
@@orlandomontfort5101 thank you for joining us once again. We are glad you spent some time with us and hope to see you next time 😊
Beautiful video as always and taking us with you on your foraging walk. The fruits of your labour at the end with a nice glass of wine was the perfect end. Happy Autumn to you both.
Thanks Lisa, we do love good foraging and being in the nature. There is never enough time spent outdoors. Happy Autumn to you too! Time of letting go is upon us. And may we all let go of what doesn't serve us anymore with grace and gratitude. 💚
Could smell the forest and your precious finds overflowing from the screen. Wish I could recognize mushrooms as well as you do to enjoy this incredible bounty of the wild. Thanks. Bon apetit!
Hi Ronny, thanks for stopping by again. The knowledge of mushrooms comes from our childhood, foraging them is a favourite past time in the Czech Republic. However, our knowledge is sooo limited, there are many other species we could pick but don't know them. Despite that, we love this activity and looking forward to it every year. And the parasols were delicious. Until next time ☺💚
Thank you Ronny❤
Wow. I loved this vlog. A nice painting of happy moments 🤗😋 I hope you two are well 🙋
Thank you so much, glad you've loved it 🌷
I would love to join you on that walk, and dinner too! 🍷
Another beautiful video, thank you.
Thank you Sonia and Zuzanna must go look for mushrooms soon too ! Yum !
@@inekeroos9264 Thanks for stopping by Ineke. Happy foraging ❤️🍄🟫
Jo podzim máme tady, já už mám na zahradě jen pár cukin a doma na zavaření papriku a červenou řepu. Ty houby voní i na dálku. Hned bych si dal. Sbírají se v Portugalsku houby hodně ? Zůstávejte všichni zdraví a čilí, i pejsci tak vypadají. Ahoj Pavel
Taky přejeme zdraví a příště zase naviděnou 🌷🍄
Ty bedly jedly ty jsou😊
What a wonderful video, simple, low cut, great vibes. Thanks ladies :). Until next time x
Thank you Anna❤
We hope you will enjoy this vlog, slightly different as there is no voice over. Pure slow living on our homestead. Nothing more, nothing less xx
Fab mushrooms!
Tasty too😊
where can you find a country like this one? once one respects the land, it will give everything one needs. stay strong! 🤠😎
Thanks for your comment. This country is beautiful. It does deserve more respect though. You are right, the land is giving us everything we need; everything one needs to live healthy and meaningful life. 🌷
Thank you❤
Still lots to harvest I see. Kiwis? The mushrooms look great. So many different ones, how do you know which are safe to eat? So nice seeing you gals. Thanks for having me over. Until next time ❤❤
Hello again :), kiwis are getting ready but still hard. They will be ready to eat in December and onwards. Also kaki fruit is now ready, we like the harder version as the other is almost like a liquid jam :)). When we were young we used to go to the mountains mushroom picking and learnt which ones are safe to eat. It is kind of a tradition and past time activity back in the Czech Republic. Everyone knows :). So you can imagine our surprise when we found the same types here in Portugal. Thanks for spending some time with us. See you next time 💚🍄🌷
Yeah always something to eat here😊
YOUR PARADISE IS BEAUTIFUL
thank you, there are some stunning places around us, we only need to open our eyes and hearts to see it 🌷
Thank you❤
❤
What a wonderful backstory of you and your dogs. It is such a crying shame how we humans treat our supposedly 'best friends'. They surely do have the dream life with you both that's for sure. Thank you for the treat recipe as well. I shall be having a go at that this week. Take good care. 👍🏼
@@owenp65 Dear Owen, thank you so much for your appreciation and acknowledgement. Our dogs are lucky to have us and we are rewarded by their unconditional love. Good luck making treats and see you next time 😊🌷❤️
Thank you❤
Thank you so much for sharing the dog treat recipe. Finally made them this morning. Result... the boys absolutely love them. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 😋 🐶🐶🐶
@@owenp65 that's fab 👌 ❤️
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story. Suki's legacy lives on, and what a wonderful thing that is! ❤ At the same time it is also harrowing how people in Portugal, generally speaking, treat their pets. I've left Portugal many, many years ago but I will never forget how cruel and barbaric the portuguese are to animals in that god forsaken country! As a mental health professional, I truly believe that no one in Portugal should be able to keeps animals unless their undergo a psychiatric assessment. Once again thank you for your videos.
thank you for your comment. The attitude towards animals, particularly domestic ones, is a big problem here. It was a big eye opener for us. But the extent of the problem goes far beyond domestic. They also tend to kill everything that moves, even hedgehogs, snakes and frogs. It's one of those things we cannot ignore anymore. Thanks for watching our videos and hope you continue to do so. 🌺
It's very true what you say about people in Portugal killing everything that moves. I remember as a kid growing up in a village in northern Portugal, how kids my age would get air riffles to kill birds just for fun. As adults they moved on to become hunters and fishing as a "sport". I'm very happy that many people with YT channels such as yourselves highlight this issue. Obrigada!
@@orlandomontfort5101very sad😢
A beautiful story of dogs and dog lovers. What a happy, busy family you are. I'd probably fight with them over these wondeeful treats. Look fit for 2 legged creatures too. 😇
Ronny, the biscuits are great for humans as well, add a pinch of salt and you have great companion to cheese :). 💚
Thank you ❤
Great to know the history behind the dogs❤
Thanks Ineke, I wanted to tell the story for a long time. There is still so much more to tell but I think this is it in a nutshell. See you next time :) 💚
Love your dogs! I also have a couple rescues. Nothing better than their unconditional love. ❤
@@inherspiritart thank you so much 😊
Thank you❤
Beautiful dogs. I have 3 rescued female dogs and 1 rescued cat. One of the ladies, Xiau, we suppose is almost 18 years and is the smalest one weighting aroud 3 kg. Then Shiro we suppose has between 13 and 15 years and weight 7 kg. Shiro was taken by the police to an addicted couple that used her to have puppies and then they sold them. Shiro is white and the babies should have been very fluffy. Perhaps due to the first years of her life, malnourished for sure, she has an neurological condition that influence her head'smovements, and now she is already blind and deaf, unfortunately 13:59 .. The last one is Indie, a brown dog of 14 kg of personality. The cat was the last addition, and living in the neighbourhood started to follow my dogs in the morning walks😅. One day he was waiting for me outside my building, and in the some day he entered the family. Is now a big cat, the sweetest cat I've ever met 💙
Such a wonderful comment. Thank you. I think there is nothing better than the unconditional love you get from rescued souls. Much love to you all 💞🐶🐱
Thank you❤
Thanks for the lovely vid! 🐾❣️The one who has not adopted a dog, cannot even imagine that unconditional love, happiness, gratitude.... they shower on us for the rest of their lives! We had a note on our entrance door, as a warning ⚠️-" If our dog doesn't like you, we probably won't either!" 😜🤣
@@lidijabirsa7768 🤭 love the note, very true though, isn't it? ❤️
Our dogs, they bark at any move😂
@@zuzananullova1337 Good doggies, haha! Our Liza would bark when someone rang the bell, especially when the intercom rang, OMG !!! So she'd bark all time until that one came into aptm and then she would jump like a crazy with happiness! Thank God we are on the first floor! 🤣🤣🤣We finally installed some button to turn off the intercom and informed all our friends that they have to call us on the phone, if they intend of entering the house! Btw, Liza looked exactly like Suki, just a dark grey 🐾❣️
How lucky you gals are to have such sweet souls in your lives. I truly believe that a house is not a home without animals. Sadly, I live with my elderly mother who unfortunately grew up with that particular Portuguese attitude towards animals, so I am without that unconditional comfort at this time.( Which would be so helpful as dementia is a demanding disease and it's just us.) One of the reasons I enjoy your videos is I get to spend time with your animals. They so obviously well cared for and cherished. Those treats were well received and look so easy to make. I have some special dog friends that I will make some for at Christmas. Thanks for having me over always appreciate your company.❤
Thank you for your comment. We truly are lucky to have such amazing dogs sharing their lives with us. If we could we would have more :). If people want to know unconditional love they need to adopt a dog or two. I used to work with people with dementia so I can sympathize with you. It is a cruel disease and you lose the person twice. Sending much love to you and lots of strength. 💚🐶🦮🐕🦺
Thank you, yes,we are lucky. They are the very intelligent and kind dogs. They accepted Woody to their pack immediately. We are lucky to be with them❤
