Hello, I'm an Acadian fiddler based near Seattle, WA. I love Québécois, Acadian, Irish, Old-Time, and Danish fiddling and my Tune of the Week series was set up to showcase some of my favorite tunes. I love to teach fiddle tunes as well, so most of my videos have a slowed-down version of the tune for folks who want to learn how to play it.
#SqueezeboxSunday: Cinq, Quatre, Trois - Devon's Tune of the Day 222
For #SqueezeboxSunday, here's a super fun classic Québécois tune that we call "Cinq, Quatre, Trois" (5, 4, 3). The real name is "La Gigue à Ti-Cogne Picard" from the playing of Lorenzo Picard of Montmagny. He called it something else, but everyone calls it Cinq, Quatre, Trois in my experience. The reason for this is that the first part has 5 measures, the second part has 4 measures, and the third part has 3 measures. It's a neat little tune!!

Ce Pouflas - Devon's Tune of the Day 221
Переглядів 482 години тому
This is a sweet little tune of Québécois origin from upstate New York near Saratoga Springs. There must have been a great French-Canadian fiddle community tied to New York because I've found some nice tunes from that region. "Ce Pouflas" is from fiddler and singer Lawrence Older who was an Anglo, but learned this from an unnamed Québécois fiddler he called "Joe Baker" which was a common nicknam...
The Washing Machine Tune - Devon's Tune of the Day 220

Ok this is a fun one I've been wanting to do for a while. I have a washing machine and a dishwasher that both play such a merry little tune to themselves when they're finished washing. Everyone in my family hates it and tries to turn it off, but I love it and turn it back on! It's like the machines are so pleased with the work they did and are humming to themselves. What is this tune?!?! Ok I d...

Another fun tune from the tunebook: "Les Faiseux de Tounes/Tunesmiths". Compiled by fiddler Anastasia Desroches, it's a great book of new compositions from Acadian fiddlers in PEI. This one is a really nice one from fiddler Samantha Gallant that's quite well built. This tunebook is great! Like and Subscribe if you're enjoying my 365 Tune of the Day Project! Seksmannsril - Devon's Tune of the Day 218

It was fun to play that French version of "Soldier's Joy" yesterday and after I posted on Facebook, Danish fiddler Kristian Bugge pointed out some other Scandinavian versions of the tune, including this really nice Norwegian version, "Seksmannsril" (Six Person Reel). This is a very popular folkloric dance, especially for children, in Norway, usually played to the melody of "Soldier's Joy" but w...
HOW did Soldier's Joy get to France in the 1800s?? - Devon's Tune of the Day 217
Переглядів 20616 годин тому
This one's a real mystery! "Soldier's Joy" is one of the most popular fiddle tunes ever, but how did it get to the Poitou region of Western France in the 1800s?? And how did it keep so much of its structure and bowing intact? Soldier's Joy, which originated in Scottish collections as early as the late 1700s, has been traced to Poitou in the late 1800s via Pierre Martin's manuscript of Poitevin ...
Avant-deux des oiseaux - Devon's Tune of the Day 216

Watch out, this cute avant-deux from Poitou and Vendée is a real earworming! I've been whistling it for a few days. "Avant-deux des oiseaux", like yesterday's tune, is from Les Joyeux Vendéens, a kind of official folkloric troupe from La Vendée in Western France. This tune has been found in Poitou as well, and I found a nice version from Ernest Sourisseau of Vendée that had some cool words to t...

My hurdy gurdy was VERY cranky at being neglected for a few months during the move. So she and I were a little stiff today, but this turned out to be a real killer tune on the vielle à roue. I learned "Avant-deux de la Mouchampaise" from the group Les Joyeux Vendéens. Mouchamp is a lovely little town in la Vendée in Western France, part of what used to be the province of Poitou. Vendée music is...

It was fun playing that tune from New Brunswick fiddler Alcide Boudreau the other day, "Le rigodon de Sormany". New Brunswick musician Serge Comeau reached out on Facebook with some great memories of Alcide since his grandfather used to play in a band, Les Violoneux Chaleur, with him. So Serge, this one is for you! This is Alcide's version of Mason's Apron! It's not too different from the origi...

Here's a real elegant Danish tune, a sønderhoning from the island of Fanø in the West of the country. It's from the repertoire of Peter Uhrbrand and Sonnich Lydom. Love all their tunes! I messed up real real bad in the middle, but that's kind of part of the fun of these Tune a Day videos. You can't try to be too perfect or think too hard about it, you just need to have fun! The full tune name i...

#MandolinMonday: Le Rigodon de Sormany - Devon's Tune of the Day 211
Переглядів 129День тому
Here's a great Acadian "rigodon" from the fiddler Alcide Boudreau of Sormany, New Brunswick. According to the excellent book: Fiddling in New Brunswic: The History and its People by Gary Copeland, Boudreau wrote this tune after his hometown. Also, I've been wondering this, but Copeland says a "rigodon" is a fast paced dance for two in New Brunswick. Sormany and nearby Robertville are just up No...

Here's a really lovely Québécois slower tune from a fiddler, Alphée Otis, who's not that well known. Sounds like Daniel Roy dug him up in the archives and sent the tune to Olivier Demers of Le Vent du Nord who recorded it on their excellent "Territoires" album. Really sweet tune that sounds very French to me, though the B part I think is quite strange and unusual. Pascal Gemme has a wonderful t...

Here's a real classic Irish session fiddle tune, "Dr. Gilbert's". I think the definitive version is from Seán Smyth of the Irish band Lúnasa, but I've developed a lot of my own ornaments and variations over the many years I've played this tune. Always a favorite! Here's a great Acadian tune that we love to play for the New Year! "Reel la Mocoque" was written by Acadian fiddler Peter Arsenault of the Prince Edward Island Arsenaults. What did Fortunat Paquet call it hahaha?
Ha! Next time our paths cross I'll play you my washing machine's tune🎻
Oh, I love that one - learned it at Lark near the turn of this century!! Hope all is settled down re: disruption at your old house...deep breathes...
That certainly is a lovely tune, and a great job of playing it! Sorry to hear about your house break-in.

It really gets stuck in your head!
Very clean playing, Devon! Around here in the summer we have Mr. Softee ice cream trucks and they play the Mr. Softee jig which drives me up a wall. Yours is actually a nice tune.
Jeez the Mr. Softee tune is kind of a great jig! I think I'll do that one soon!
im definitely going to take some over those eighth note runs in the B part and trying them out next time someone calls soldiers joy
wowwww Mr Alcide Boudreau is from my place , he was a really good musician, thanks to play his version of the tune Mason's Apron
Love his playing!

Tanks again. This is sharp.
Mr. Devon it is an honor to hear you play (Le Rigodon de Sormany). When my father recorded this composition in the studio, he was suffering from cancer and left us with his album as a legacy. Sadly, a few weeks later, he left us to practice his bow in another world. Thank you for the tribute you paid him. We expect to share your well-documented videos. On behalf of the family, we invite you to continue the great work. P/S My Brother Renaud also plays fiddle with (Les Violons de L'acadie). Sincerely Réjean Boudreau
Merci Réjean, it's great to hear from you! Thank you for putting up some of your father's fiddling on UA-cam! Is there a CD that he made? I'd really love to hear it! Any way you can email it to me? My email is devon@hearthmusic.com. Did Alcide compose this tune? He did, correct? I'll check out Renaud's music too. What a great musical family you have!!
A lovely job with a lovely tune! Thanks for sharing it.
That's an excellent version and it's beautifully played!
Fascinating, and what an interesting cool variant of this good old standard tune, really nice, thanks!
Wow...that thing seems like a great device for chasing everyone out of the house.
@@stevebeschakis9775 it was made for that!
Thanks so much for providing the very interesting history behind this lovely tune. And thanks for playing it so nicely.
A lovely bird-theme tune and it's beautifully played!
We gave not a great deal of books like. Yours in the uk
Love the boys. From blue hill lovely bouncy tune
That's a lovely tune and very nicely played! Your hurdy gurdy sounds good, but it could use a bit more coffee :)
Not bad for being cranky....
Does your Vielle a roux have a drone string? I saw a player jerk the crank to make it buzz.
It's got four drone strings! But yeah, one string, la trompette, is kind of jerked to make it buzz. I do that a bit in the video, but i haven't learned how to do it very well
@@devonleger7469 Thanks. This is not meant to detract from your playing. I was just curious. I thought the jerking movement would be difficult to control. You play well. Thanks!
happy little tune!
It sure is!
Excellent playing of a very fine version of Mason's Apron!
A fine tune and very nicely played by both!
Dang :00 that’s impressive
im a violinist studying in Moncton NB - exploring the richness of Acadian fiddle music and came across your channel. So proud of the work you have done so far, its really a treasure trove.
Very cool! I'm from the States but my dad's from Moncton. Acadian fiddling in New Brunswick is pretty fascinating. Wish there were more recordings of the old stuff! It's taken us a long time to track down these old traditions!
@ Ofcourse I should have guessed it from your last name! It’s a pleasure to know Devon. I’m new in Moncton and absolutely enthralled by the French Canadian Celtic fiddle tunes. I play the violin myself and I’m learning to adapt to fiddling styles being heavily inspired by the richness and joy in these tunes. It’s a bit of an adjustment from being a classically trained violinist, but it’s a road I always wanted to explore. I learned Joe Crapaud from your video and it was a joy to play for my family. This book you refer to seem very interesting! wonder if I can pick up a hard copy somewhere? Do you have an Instagram? wish we could be connected more. Take care mon Ami!
A fine tune! Thanks for sharing it.
👍
That's a lovely job with a lovely tune! And thanks for sharing some of the marvelous history behind it.
Oh, I love this one!!
FYI perhaps you could take the battered book and have the spine cut off and replaced with spiral binding at a copy shop.
That's my plan!
B part indeed a bit odd. Looks like the move in has some order to it and the dust is settling, eh?
Yeah starting to feel a bit like my old self!
A lovely tune and beautifully played by both!
c'est bien joué
Merci!
A great Peter tune! I'm pretty sure he wrote this for his family lineage - those PEI Arsenaults call themselves the "Joe Mocauques" (Mocauque meaning marsh, I love learning it's a lowland boggy area for blueberries and cranberries!) I might see him at a tune party tonight and I'll double check with him ;)
Tell him thanks for a great tune if you see him!
Love it! Thanks for sharing your music.
A neat jig and a fine job of playing it!
I learned this great tune from a much earlier video you did, w/Dejah, before I was aware of your prodigious and talented work.
Oh that's awesome!
Les faiseux de tounes??? What’s that book?
Great book! English title is "Tunesmiths: The First Collection of Acadian Compositions from Prince Edward Island". I'll do it for TunebookTuesday the next couple weeks.
crazy tune!
Loved this tune and the video and what a cute doggie Coco is, bouncing on daddy's knee and attentively looking up at Devon, glued to his every word, sweet!
She's a good doggie!

A marvelous tune and beautifully played by both!
A fine jig and very nicely played! Happy New Year, and thanks for all your marvelous music.
