The Westfield High School Marching Band from Houston, Texas. It is a halftime show. The Lariettes are for the first about 4.5 minutes (sorry!) The Big Red Band is after that. This show does not have a lot of movement maybe it's from very early in the season they only actually march to one song.

Westfield High School Marching Band from Houston, Texas. Music from Fiddler Under the Roof and the Pines of Rome. Under the direction of Phillip Geiger. This video is from a football halftime show (Even the Lariettes drill team is at the end). The video quality isn't great, just remember the video tape is more than 20 years old and was taken in a time when video recorders were still new.

The first time The Westfield HS Marching Band won State. They also won the Governor's Cup. The directors are Phillip Geiger and Bill Watson. What an honor to have been part of this amazing performance. Yes, Geiger was strict... but I learned so much from his discipline. Very thankful to Frank Troyka as well. He taught us many life skills and values that I still implement today.
It’s on YT! 🥲❤️ Thank you for this. I still cry watching this knowing we were the first from Texas to be invited.
Blend and balance!!!
Those bones in the opener...epic. It took until 2021 for another school to have bones sound that amazing...
Hebron is like the modern equivalent of this. Amazing sound here.
Gorgeous sound and showmanship!
My left ear enjoyed this!
"Under" the Roof? Really?
We were a wall of sound. The freshmen-seniors were pushing air through their instruments. The stereo recording sounds much better.
Our rehearsals of this show were often accompanied by a natural light show...lightning.
Those were the days! So nice to see those faces; I recognized so many of them. That year, as well as most of the years I attended Westfield, we had the best of the best in terms of the school-sponsored groups and teams. I was on a team that year when we were among the top 3 in the nation. Go big red! Thanks for posting and sharing this memory.
I was in the stands for finals this year (non finalist band). This was my favorite show that year!
Klein and Westfield ...epic battles
Too bad that the sound quality was so bad in this video.
Westfield band member 86-90, good times. Philip Geiger was a perfectionist
I wish I still had my copy of the press box cam. There's a very awesome set that was missed in the multi-cam recording.
I was fortunate that my band director had press box cam video of finals - and that he let me borrow it and watch it as much as I wanted. LOL
Yes, these were the wonderful Phil Geiger years with Lamar Burkhalter teaching percussion. Yes these were wonderful years!!!!!
The third director that year was Gary HudMAN. Gary Hudson was a Westfield alum, but never taught at Westfield.
Whoever uploaded this, thank you. Memories are priceless
Actually, Georgetown HS won the 4A state championships in 1983 and won the Governor's Cup as well. Next year, MacArthur HS (in San Antonio) won the 5A state champs and the Governor's Cup.
Thanks for posting! It is great watching our old show. Awesome years.
People don't understand the significance of this show/ band . I cannot remember any band before that is place theatrics until them then everybody afterwards ( including my own Churchill charger band ) was influenced . The backward marching was used afterwArds influenced by this one band !
Thats very kind of you to say Lou X. even though Im a day late. I am proud to say Iwas part of the 86 to 89 Westfield Big Red band. I see myself a couple of times in this video. If there is anything I could do is go back in time. With a modern 4K IMAX Camera and sound gear. And record tne 86, 87, 88, 89 shows.
Thanks for posting this. Hi Phil!
I was very impressed with this performance. And to be honest, it makes me kinda proud that of all the bands that could beat this by 0.05, it ended up being mine.
Who beat them
@@deltaphoenix8616 Plymouth Centennial.
Great show, and nice uniforms for a 1990s band
I miss those great Westfield bands from the 90's....use to go to every contest in which they were entered....they were super.
My second favorite Westfield show. It's hard to beat '03!
haha, i see my big bro. nice wonky cross grip (don't hit me at Christmas mang) i also love the 'get off the field, stat!' tap at the end.
As I recall, this band came in 2nd place and was beat out for 1st by about 1/10 of a point.
It was actually less than 1/10. It was by .05 points. Ugh!
Wow! This show was great. This is an awesome musical program and performed extremely well. I have always wanted to watch the late 80s Westfield shows, and thanks to the miracle of UA-cam now I can! And at 10:41 in this video, could it be? Is it possible? Is that Murgatroid taking flight? I sure hope so! If someone who was in the 88 band sees this comment I would love it if you could clarify this. When I was in the band in the late 90s Mr. Geiger told us all about Murgatroid and his adventures with the bands of the 80s. He said that after a performance back then a bunch of Westfield fans tied up some manner of frozen poultry to a bunch of helium balloons and set it free. So I know that Murgatroid flew at least once in his life! I'm looking at the balloons released in this video really closely but it is hard to tell one way or another if Murgatroid is among them. But in any case, this was an amazing show! It's great to finally see it after all of these years! Thank you so much for uploading it.
Good times!!!
God what an incredible band!
One of my all-time favorite high school band performances. I marched in the John Marshall High School band that year - We got 3rd place in this State UIL Contest. I watched this performance on VHS video probably 1000 times. I can sing it in its entirety. A big part of my musical history was studying these arts & getting a DCI Championship with the Cadets in 93. This is a fantastic show of incredible musician children. Absolutely incredible show.
