Making A Travel Art Journal #journalcover #bookbinding #artjournal
Having a sketchbook or watercolor pad when you are out is not always practical, so make an A6 book with mixed media paper which will give you the option to sketch or paint where you are, and when you are finished, the journal will fit neatly into a pocket or bag.

    I've been working with plaster for over 50 I'm years. Here are a few suggestions. Paint your dry item with an even coat of water based Gesso. It will help seal the plaster to keep it from being so absorbent. Use a blow dryer to cure the gesso, then apply your paint. Acrylic or latex paint works great! After drying, apply clear coat acrylic sealer or spray gloss. Hope this helps. (Note: I absolutely love working with Duncan Opaque Stain Acrylic Paint, available at any ceramic supply retailer...Another is CeramCoat Acrylic Paint by Delta, available at Hobby Lobby.)

    Will using dark blue fabric paint on black parts of a pattern on a piece of clothing cover up the black? All the answers I see use white fabric.

    • @colleenseymourcrafts5802
      @colleenseymourcrafts5802 25 днів тому

      @@oolala53 you get two types of fabric paint "bases". The one you would find most easily has a transparent base which gives you bright colors. This one is the one most suitable for painting on white or cream fabric to maintain the color. The second is opaque fabric paint which has an opaque WHITE base. This is usually used for painting on dark fabrics. BUT because the base is white you tend to get pastel colours. I would suggest two steps: first step paint your black design with opaque white fabric paint to block out the black. Once this is dry paint your blue over the opaquewhite paint. You can get these supplies from a craft or hobby store or a screen printing supply store. Please bear in mind that this is a suggestion and I would suggest you do a test first to make sure that you are happy as I can't guarantee your result.

    • @colleenseymourcrafts5802
      @colleenseymourcrafts5802 4 місяці тому

      I'm not sure I understand your question correctly so I'll do my best. If you are asking how to dry a large area which has been painted...the best thing is to leave it flat and let it air dry. This way you won't smudge your design. If you are asking how to dry paint which you have put on thickly...I would advise against putting paint on too thickly. The paint needs to soak into the fabric. If it is sitting thick on top of the fabric it us likely that some of it will wash off. Once all fabric is dry you need to heat set the paint with a hot dry iron...ironing for 2 to 3 minutes over each area.

      For this technique the fabric becomes very wet and will stretch and say in a frame so it is easier to work on a flat surface. If you were using silk and gutta liner then you would be able to stretch that fabric for that style of crackle.

    HELP! Colleen, I'm having trouble sourcing transfer glaze in Canada. Would it, by chance, go by a different name? Can I know the brand name of the transfer glaze you used (you have tape over the name)? Pls & thnx!

    • @colleenseymourcrafts5802
      @colleenseymourcrafts5802 4 місяці тому

      The product I used was made by Dala but was local to South Africa. What you might find it called a base coat or step one of the antique crackle method. What you are looking for are two products which dry TRANSPARENT. The base coat (transfer glaze) dries relatively quickly. The top coat ( antique crackle) takes a much longer time to dry. This causes the crackle. You would then have to highlight the cracks with a gilding paste in the color if your choice, an oil color or even a wax polish in a tin. MAKE SURE that you don't get a crackle which cracks one color paint over a second color paint because it is NOT the same. Sorry about the capital's but it is important. I hope this helps.

      I normally mix a packet of wallpaper paste in an empty 2 litre bottle. I usually use Pebeo Marvelling inks but have also used oil based model paints on water, and drawing inks on sphagnum moss base. I tend to dilute the wallpaper paste till the inks I'm using flow on the surface as you would like them to. I'm afraid it's not an exact method but more by feel. Thanks for watching.

    I love to repurpose things rather than throw them away. This is a great idea for those plastic flower pots.

    Is the transfer glaze what is used to transfer photos?

    • @colleenseymourcrafts5802
      @colleenseymourcrafts5802 6 місяців тому

      In this crackle method the pictures are glued on to the surface first. The transfer glaze (base coat) is applied OVER the pictures as the first step of the crackle. When it is DRY the antique crackle is applied. The transfer glaze dries relatively quickly and the antique crackle dries slowly this causes the antique crackle to "crackle". Only then do you color the crackle to highlight the cracks. I hope this helps.

    Please help when taking out my moulds they seem to stick and break like the star fish ones

      A few things could be possible: it's a good idea to spritz water in the mould first. Second make sure your mixture is not too liquid...about 50: 50 works well. Thirdly make sure the plaster has hardened before taking it out the mould. Lastly be gentle when removing delicate shapes and don't force the plaster shape out. Try to get a little air between the mould and the shape and that should release it. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for watching :)

    I ordered the tulip fabric paint, and five days later, when I opened it with my daughter, it was a spongey mess. Any tips? It wouldn't even adhere to the brush.

      I haven't worked with Tulip fabric paints but I quickly googled them and they are water based. I would squeeze or scoop a little out and add a small quantity of salt and mix it. It should do the trick. If you're happy that this worked you can do the rest...or return them

    Does it work with airbrush ?

      I'm afraid I can't honestly answer that as I haven't worked with an airbrush before. Perhaps you could do a test first. Sorry I can't help.

    Having all your thoughts and ideas in one book is such a valuable tool. You can just pick up your book and flip through even if the ideas are not in any particular order. It's a bit like a walk down memory lane when you pick it up after a period of time.
