    Hello, is it possible to keep the preamp board on it's place, but solder a new pair of RCA on the GND RED GND WHITE connections (over the original one) + a separate GND ? So to have the original setup, + the alternative PHONO MOD ? I just bought the LP120, and it's asking for the mod ! Thank you.

    Use some isopropyl alcohol with a very fine glass-fiber brush (or the carbon fiber brush you have to clean your records) and you are good to get-rid of all the gum (you have to support the cantilever putting a thin sheet of that "magic eraser" to the opposite side of the stylus) ,

    I agree, the Crosley you buy in the box is probably rubbish when you purchase it. I have one though it ain't so much a Crosley cruiser anymore. For start off, they tend to provide a stylus with a sapphire needle and a plastic cantilever. It's not necessarily bad but you'll get better sound from one with a metal cantilever and diamond needle. I also think the harshness of the plastic cantilever can make records skip in my experience. That's the first thing to swap out. You can actually get an upgrade for the cartridge - BANPA BP2ATC or Vakind P-192D. Both take a flip over 78/LP BSR ST 17 stylus. I've currently got the Vakind P-192D on mine with a diamond tipped flip over stylus. Tracking force - well, most MM turntables are designed to track light (1-3g) and as a result need anti-skate. However, the Crosley has a ceramic cartridge. They need a higher tracking force so don't need an anti-skate mechanism. Anything up to 5g of tracking weight is fine. Some older ceramic carts tracked way higher than that! My Crosley was just over 5g and with the new Valkind cartridge and stylus I have managed to get it to just over 4g using some counterweights. Most cheap end suitcase player manufacturors (and this is not restricted to them) don't know the difference between a MM cartridge and a Ceramic cartridge. I didn't until I did research. Ceramic's need to go into an amp with a High Impedence (like a guitar does) If you feed a ceramic into a solid state amp the result is flat and tinny (sound familiar) You can get round this on the Crosley by using a high impedence preamp between the tonearm and main amp. I wanted to upgrade the speakers and make it louder so went the whole hog and ripped out the Crosley mainboard and put together a high impedence preamp from a schematic on the web and purchased a 10w amp pcb. Coupled with the 10w full range speakers, mp3 decoder board I threw in the side for good measures and made it rechargeable (using laptop batteries and a lithium charging circuit) All in all, it's a good little player. WIll it sound as good as a turntable with a MM cartridge? No, but the beauty of it is I can grab a box of 45's and go down to the beach and play them if I wished to do so :) Here's my Crosley BTW and I'm still tweaking it to try and make it better... ua-cam.com/video/pE4EqKm6jUc/v-deo.html

    A combination of a magic eraser and a little blob of blue tack is all you really need, or at least what works for me. If the stylus is especially dirty, I’ll add a bit of distilled water to the brush. Be careful when using a liquid you’re not sure of what’s in it, as it can eat away at the glue holding your stylus to the cantilever. I’ve unfortunately had 2 styli just fall out and damage the record from liquids that can eat away at the glue.

    With this modification did you also upgrade your stylus/cartridge? if I have this procedure down, my thought would be go full boar and get a new and better needle and speakers? What size speakers do you use? thanks again for the video showing your work! God Bless

    • @vinylanatomy7888
      @vinylanatomy7888 3 місяці тому

      Actually, I upgraded my cartridge before I did the procedure. To explore the higher end cartridge's potential is one of the reason I did the upgrade. If you want to "hear" the differences, I would suggest using headphone (even though I don't like headphone in general) , or record the before and after. Listening with speaker in a distance is harder to find the differences. My current speakers are tower speakers with 6" woofers. I plan on doing video for them since I upgrade recently :)

      @@vinylanatomy7888 My LP 120 USB was probably manufactured in the time frame of 2008 to 2011, kept it in storage and didn't even set it up till around 2020 or so, basically I believe the stylus/cartridge was updated by AT to the VM 95E, think mine is just the Green 95E. I'll be using a couple of vintage pieces of equipment ( Sansui 661 receiver/stereo and Sansui Integrated Amp AU-317 stock phono) and read that if I do NOT get strong enough speakers that is actually a bad thing to do? I'll be using the system in a small bedroom converted to a dedicated music/piano/vinyl listening room. I'm sure before I get the "pre-amp"ripped out I'll get some passive speakers and see how the sound is for me with operation mode to "phono" on the back of the LP-120 USB, along with upgraded cartridge. I'm not into headphones either. Hate to show you my ignorance, but have no idea what a "woofer" does? My guess it has something to do with getting a bigger bass sound? Now with the operational mode set to "line" I'm using 2 small bookshelf speakers from "mouKey" and the sound is not what I expect. thanks and God Bless

      @@brucetowell3432 Here are my answer to your questions 1. "green 95e" My LP120usb also came with the green 95e, it's a really good starting point. You don't need to upgrade it just for the sake of keeping up with the latest. As long as the cartridge is in good condition. 2. "Read that if I do NOT get strong enough speakers that is actually a bad thing to do?" I don't quite get your question here, I assume you meant the speaker can't handle the power from the equipment?? The truth is the other way around... Overpower is never a thing, under power is what will damage your equipment. 3. Before you commit to take the lp120 preamp out, go verify the condition of your vintage gear. Both your 661 receiver and AU-317 has phono preamp built in. Send them to professional cleaning and inspecting on the capacitors to ensure they perform well. Then connect your LP 120 with either one and see how you like the sound. (put lp120 to phono --> connect to 661/317's phono input, so it uses the phono on reciever/amp and not lp120) 4. I mentioned woofer size is just to give you an idea on the size of the speakers. Woofers handle the mid and low frequency and tweeter handles the high. The larger the woofer normally means it pushes more air and can fill a larger room. 5. I'm not sure which Moukey bookshelf speaker you have, but based on my quick research, I do not think the brand produces high quality stereo gear and I'm not surprise by the poor performance. 6. Therefore the key is actually the performance of the phono stage & the amp of your vintage receiver / amp you have. 7. And you need a pair of good passive speakers to go with the gear you have. Cheers!

    Has anyone compared the c-notes to the c-sharp, overnight sensation, and sambas? I've only build an 18" gsg marty so Im brand new to the DIY bookshelf speakers. I'm looking to build a pair but I'm not sure which generally sound the best. Im going for more clarity than bass since I'm already in way overkill with bass. Id love to hear everyone's opinions!

    • @vinylanatomy7888
      @vinylanatomy7888 5 місяців тому

      C-sharp is the powered version of C-note. Basically, it's the same model as C-note. Personally, I like passive speakers more. When I was researching, I did see people comparing Overnight Sensation with C-note. My conclusion of the comparison is that C-note is more refined than Overnight Sensation and can play louder. But don't quote me on that lol Just from glancing at the spec of Samba, my guess will be as follows: Compared to C-note, Samba is slightly harder to drive and might be more revealing on the amplifier than C-note. Samba is larger in size, and probably not suited for a desktop setup. However, the larger size also means it can push more air and satisfy a larger room than the C-note. Surprisingly, Samba doesn't go too much deeper compared to C-Note, but based on the woofer size and other specs, I would say it should sound "thicker" compared to C-note. If you are not looking for bass, I would say C-note is a good option. Its highs are crispy, detailed, and can be slightly sharp on large volumes but not piercing sharp or overly emphasized. The bass is sufficient but nothing crazy, in a larger room you might find it too thin. That's my 2 cents. Cheers.

    I have both the BW607S2 and the KEFQ150. I bought them both on sale. They have lived in an extra bedroom for 2 years now. The are run by a SMSL300 all in one. I can say the BW is warmer and muddier but in a good way. The KEF is brighter and more accurate. Overall I have left the Q150 in the room because it's a small/medium room size and I don't need to turn it up that much. The Q150 is just slightly more pleasing to my ears. I put the BW is the main room which is large. I currently run KEFLS50 in that room. They did an amazing job for their size. Of course they will not be replacing the LS50s. Room is such an important part of the equation. If you can buy any of these speakers at sale price you will not be disappointed. At full retail....hmmmm....kind of maybe I don't know.

    I bought Boxer in August of 2007 after reading several exceptional reviews of them. At that point that was their 4th proper album. The 1 - 2 punch of fake empire and mistaken for strangers - instantly converted me. It was like Nick Cave, Interpol, Radiohead and Wilco all distilled down into some new sonic vibe. There was rally nothing quite like them, and there really still ain’t. Crazy to think you didn’t hear them until 2018… Alligator their 3rd album was the seminal album. That was a turning point where they really nailed what they were going for. High Violet was the finessed, highly produced, sheening perfection of that sound to that point. Sleep Well Beast for me was a favorite also - I feel like Sleep Well Beast was a reimagining of their sound. It’s obviously got way more electronics on it - but also much simpler song structures. the title track, is one of my all time favorite tracks. That feral guitar solo is just so badass over that wild drum beat. So that’s my National take! Haha cool video

      I wasn't in the State until 2012, although I have always been a music lover and physical media supporter but wasn't invested in the music or vinyl record scene back then. The first time I heard the National was at ACL. I was there for M83 and Radiohead, and fell in love with the National that day. I didn't want to review the music (maybe I should lol) because design is my profession whereas music was not. (Man, I barely can play guitar for my 2 years old lol) To me, the way the National redefines rock and Matt's poetic delivery on both the lyric and singing is unique, just like you said: there really is nothing like them. The complex and ambiguous lyrics, the low rumble chanting, and the glooming but elegant melody, all these resonate with me and my aesthetic, where things have a deeper meaning than just poppy. And that's my the National story for you, cheers.

      Don't, the needle is attached with glue and you don't want too much chemical to touch it. The dirty stuff stuck on our needle mostly are dust and dry gunk, apply common sense on how to remove those and you should be fine. Don't over think it, cheers.

    Very good points. Budget should be one of the points also. Your reference Hanpin turntables can be a good option. I would also point out that Hanpin does many different brands like AT, Stanton, Reloop, Pioneer and Technics in China. I'm sure there is more. From these brands AT is the starting point. It does some good TT but are directed to the lower end of the market with all the pre amps and bluetooth build in making these pretty poor overall for an audiophile quality. Stanton, Reloop and Pioneer are jump in price and often more simple and no gimmicks. Directed to professional and home audiophile use. Technics we jump at the price again up to three times more expensive. This doesn't mean it is better. Brand name sells. The point here is that all these TT are influenced by Technics in design. Even Technics itself that stopped making TT's 2010 if I remember right. Rights and blueprints for the Technics were sold to Pioneer. Vinyl revival has launch some new Technics TT's made in Japan also and these are very expensive up to ten times more coin directed to the top end of the market. But lets go back to the Hanpin TT's. Pioneer got the Technics rights 2011. Pioneer used these blueprints to redesign the popular Technics TT's not to copy. Yet for example the Pioneer PLX-1000 is only 1/3rd of the price than Technics SL-1200GR and in quality is lot more. You pay for the name. Depending what is your budget I would recommend the Pioneer PLX-500 or PLX-1000. There is a huge difference in these two TT's but for the price point a good choice.

    Very good video and informative. The ultrasonic cleaner is so good. You wouldn't need to do it often if your records are clean. But it does the best job. The other two methods I think are a bit iffy to be honest now that you showed the ultrasonic cleaning. Those ultrasonic cleaners are maybe $20.

      Adding strength to the cabinet. It reduces resonance and strengthen the 3/8”(or 1/2”) MDF boards. You can also add a board with cutouts in the cabinet to do the same thing.

    It is important to keep the stylus cleaned. If it's dirty while playing a record it will wear out faster. The Last Stylus cleanner combined with the StyLast will prolonged the life of it 10 times.

    Buy a ultrasonic cleaner that is made for cartridges. You never know what happens if the suspension get wet when you use a big ultrasonic cleaner. I use a Audio Technica from the 90ts that works excellent. Moves away everything that has sticked to the stylus. I think the Dynavox HFC-50 works in the same way. You just need normal water on it. It is the implosion of the water bubbles that clean the stylus. Always a risk that the glue that is used for the stylus will get damaged so don't use it more than when it is needed. Never had any problem with that during 30 years use of it.

    Why don't you try CO contact cleaner spray for electrical contacts. It should wash away the rubbish and evaporate dry without residue. No force on the cartridge and won't effect the connections.

      @@vinylanatomy7888electronic contact cleaner is a "street"-term for a wide range of fluids, i use isopropyl alcohol, just a drop on the cleaning brush, works perfectly. Technically, WD-40 is a contact cleaner too, while it cleans perfectly it leaves a thin film of the lubricant which can attract dust more easily, so i would stay away from that...having said that, only apply all of these on the stylus tip only since it will be aggressive towards plastic or rubber parts

    I find that periodic wet cleaning with a non-alcohol stylus cleaner seems to prevent buildup. Also, I use a Degritter on every record I buy.

    Just got the KEF Q150 today, I almost got the Bowers and Wilkins 607 S2. But comparing the two, the KEF sounded better and richer to me, the B&W has a sound I would likely have to get used to (but I did like them). Just no to Klipsch, even the RP-600m II has a sound I just dislike. It does sound good with live concerts, but gets bright. So from best to worst: KEF Q150 (bought on sale $329), B&W 607 S2 (almost $700), Klipsch RP-600m II ($550-650 typically). With the price difference, you can get a better subwoofer, DAC, or amplifier.

      Thank you! On the new vinyl they have a black sticker saying what color it is. If not sure, use discogs.com with the label / catalog number printed on the spin of the sleeve, it will tell you which version and color you are getting. Ex. B0037874-01 = milky clear + glitter B0037873-01 = Targt red+glitter Всего хорошего!
