With a Little Help from My Friends cover
My one-man-band cover of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from my Friends."
The bass line in this song has always been one of my favorites, so when I got a Rickenbacker bass, I had to learn it! Other instruments included my limited edition George Harrison "Rocky" Stratocaster, Pearl drums with Zildjian cymbals, and Yamaha keyboard. Some of Paul's vocals are too high for me, so please be kind!

Here Comes the Sun cover

My one-man-band cover of “Here Comes the Sun” from Abbey Road by The Beatles (1969). "Here Comes the Sun" is the most streamed Beatles song on Spotify with over a billion streams. It’s more difficult to play than it sounds, due mostly to multiple time signature changes in the bridge. John didn’t sing or play on The Beatles’ recording of this song, because he was recuperating from a car crash at...

My one-man-band cover of “The Long and Winding Road” from Let It Be (Naked version) by The Beatles (1969). By now, most people know the backstory of the Get Back recording sessions that resulted in the “Let It Be” album released after The Beatles broke-up. The master tapes were taken over by producer Phil Spector with John Lennon’s approval. Spector added orchestrations and choral parts to this...

My one-man-band cover of “For No One” from Revolver by The Beatles (1966). It’s a simple, but beautiful, sad song about lost love. Credits and rig rundown: Vocals Yamaha CK61 (piano, clavichord and French horn voices) Dean Rhapsody fretless bass Production: Audacity DAW and Xvox Pro processor
Day Tripper cover

My one-man-band cover of “Day Tripper” by The Beatles (1965). It was recorded during the “Rubber Soul” sessions, but not included on the album, as was the practice in those days. Day Tripper features one of the most recognizable guitar riffs in pop music. It’s harder to play than it sounds, as it’s very fast (136 bpm). Credits and rig rundown: Vocals (lead, harmony and backing) PRS semi-hollow ...
When I'm Sixty Four cover

My sister Teri has a special birthday coming up! Can you guess which one? Here’s my one-man-band cover of “When I’m Sixty-Four” from Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles (1967) that she requested for the occasion. I don’t think Teri realized the magnitude of her request. I had to buy B-flat and bass clarinets and tubular bells, and then learn to play them! I don’t know where ...
This is Hardcore cover

My one-man-band cover of “This Is Hardcore” by Jarvis Cocker and Pulp (1998). Pulp was a neo-punk band in the late 90’s, who were very popular in the U.K. and parts of Europe. "This Is Hardcore" was released with a very cool music video, which was ranked the 47th best video of all time by New Music Express in the U.K. The album reached No. 1 in U.K., but only 114 in the U.S. It’s the only “punk...
It Only Has to Happen Once cover

My one-man-band cover of “It Only Has to Happen Once” by Ambitious Lovers (1989). I first heard this song in the erotic film, “Wild Orchid,” directed by Zalman King and starring Mickey Rourke, Carré Otis and Jacqueline Bisset. I ordered the soundtrack recording and to my disappointment, this song was not included. Years later (after the internet gave us access to everything), I found-out the so...
The Other Side of Life cover

My one-man-band cover of “The Other Side of Life” by Japan (1979). The tone and chord progression are very unusual and melancholy, but beautiful. Composer David Sylvian has said the song is about the country of Japan, but I’m not buying that; it’s clearly about a romantic partner. The melody doesn’t follow a discernible pattern; it seems like someone else wrote the music, then Sylvian recorded ...
A Remark You Made cover (bass solo only)

My cover of the fretless bass solo from “A Remark You Made” by Weather Report, featuring Jaco Pastorius (1977). The theme was a classic in the late 70s funky jazz genre. Pastorius was widely regarded as the greatest and most influential fretless bassists of all time. However, he suffered from drug abuse and mental health issues, as well as financial hardships and homelessness. He died in 1987 a...
Walk on the Wild Side cover

My one-man-band cover of “Walk on the Wild Side” by Lou Reed (1972). This song is not really my style, but has one of the best-known bass lines in pop music. Actually, the original version consists of two bass lines - both played by the legendary Herbie Flowers, who died on September 5, 2024. In the original, the lower bass line is played on an upright (acoustic) bass and the higher line is pla...
Jean the Birdman cover

My abridged one-man-band cover of “Jean the Birdman” by David Sylvian, Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn (1993). “Abridged” in that the guitar solo is omitted because I couldn’t figure it out! For those unfamiliar with David Sylvian, he fronted a British synth pop/glam band in the late 70s to early 80s called “Japan,” which also featured Mick Karn on fretless bass. After Japan broke-up, Sylvian and Ka...
Avalon cover

My abridged one-man-band cover of “Avalon” by Roxy Music (1982), my favorite song by them. “Abridged” in that the saxophone and black female vocal solos are omitted because I don’t have a saxophone or black female singer! All vocals performed and instruments played by me. Rig rundown: PRS semi-hollow body (lead and rhythm guitars) Yamaha CK61 (synth strings and brass) Dean Rhapsody 4-string fre...
