Here at Rising Phoenix we are looking to promote a renaissance of practice and study in traditional Chinese martial arts. We believe that real gong fu flourishes when Yin and Yang combine. Yang training should be arduous, with long hours of stance wo...

    I can't speak to the specifics of this book, but I have a few of Erle's videos and picked up some VERY practical applications that I use to this day. Especially for generating power in a very small distance. I've also worked with people that work with what are commonly called "pressure points" but really are just nerve and blood points . There's a ton of obvious BS surrounding that, but I have had some pretty interesting things happen when hit in certain spots . Mainly just dead arm or leg, or dazed . And pretty much any shot to anywhere on the neck is going to get good results .

    "Striking Distance" by Russo is a really good look at SF Chinatown scene that James Yimm Lee came out of and formed the basis for what Bruce went on to create.

  • @NeiJiaQuanBook
    @NeiJiaQuanBook Рік тому

    James Yimm Lee was Bruce's real teacher, much more so than Yip Man. JYL is a really interesting character who had a huge impact on the Kung Fu craze of the 60's-70's. He learned from the masters of SF Chinatown but rejected their classical forms and began creating an innovative, new approach to martial arts in Oakland. Too bad he died so young.

    This is was the first martial arts book I owned. His YMAA lineage is taught at Amato's Goju Ryu in Keansburg NJ & was one of the arts I learned there. Learning Goju Ryu & White Crane together gave me a solid foundation. Many don't know that Goju Ryu, and Uechi Ryu were created in the 20th century due to Jingoism & Nationalism of Japanese empire; the Okinawans had to change the names of the martial arts and make them more Japanese and created new forms in the process to separate them from the Chinese martial arts. This was the same process later done in Korea to create Taekwondo. Later I came to see that some of the forms were just sections of longer forms for instance Goju/Uechi Sanchin and the first row of pictures from Hung Gar Tiger Crane Combination form then Tensho is the next section followed by Naifaunchi before leaving the Crane sets and going into the Tiger sets.

    Learn how to prounance his name properly, to me this book is valuable as I do TWC his system, not good to bring down others. One question do you think your more advanced than William Cheung? The hour long vids of him teaching are all around the world, not just Australia. He learnt more living with Yip Man for a period, different footwork, etc. One of the top fighters in that clan. It's really a bad look to say what you did about One of Yip Man's top students imo.

      Sorry to hear you interpreted my comments about the author as negative, I just didn't feel that this fairly old book was a great resource. Nothing bad to say about the skill of the author. I actually say "he has better books out there." Also I commented that his UA-cam stuff is great including some of the recordings of his seminar. All the best and good luck with your training ☯️ 🙏 👊

    Mark mate Erle taught all Martial artists from all backgrounds have you touched hands with Eli or any of Erle’s advanced teachers ? I trained and learnt from Erle in the late 90’s he would never call himself master, he didn’t play the kung fu game, Also Erle trained and taught everyday people if you never studied with any of his advance students you will never know! Erle was the real shit and he was a everyday bloke who was a musician and loved his family and knew a little bit about the internal world where most will never know. Mark hopefully you will move your ego and actually learn something from Erle. Cheers Sam I can see Erle now sitting down looking at your video and not paying any real attention to you. Cheers more training and less critiquing mate.

      Hi there Sam. Thanks for the feedback. Im sorry you seem to be upset by the video, my intention was to do a balanced tribute to Erle. I'm a big fan of his style and teachings (I studied with some of his top UK students like Paul Brecher and Mark Green) I just find some of his books a little tough to read (but with great info buried inside). Most of the other commenters seemed to feel it was a pleasant and balanced review. All the best with your training mate 🙏 👊 ☯️

      @@MarkStevensonRPKF Good day from Australia. I’m not upset I never said I was upset. Everyone has there way of learning I only use Erle’s books as reference point as the majority of his information is on video also,not everyone can learn off his videos again it depends on the person. Again Erle wasn’t a big shot he wrote every book himself and most of the info at first was for his students who lived abroad that he couldn’t train with everyday , again I’m not a sensitive person saying don’t talk about my teacher blah blah that’s kids game. I just felt like you spoke about a man who dedicated the majority of his life on information that no one else shared in the martial world, before Erle none of the High level Chinese internal Gung fu masters would ever speak on the subjects that Erle wrote about. He once told that us that while studying Bagua Zhang in Hong Kong they didn’t want him teaching other westerners Erle decided to share what he knew any way. Again Eli Montaigue will be moving back to the UK next year go train with him go have some fun 🤩.

    I read this book back in about 2000. I was shocked that he had a realistic idea of how utterly invincible a grappler is against a non grappler (something no one wanted to admit at that time) but then would declare that these fairly simple techniques would utterly disarm a grappler. twenty years later no UFC fighter has declared that grappling was made obsolete with Tai Chi. I still watch his videos- it seems like his teaching had some value but were never used in the cage (which he called a child's playground- Fo the streetz only!)

    • @MarkStevensonRPKF
      @MarkStevensonRPKF 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment. I pretty much agree with what you have said. I never trained with Erle but I have watched a lot of his video material. He has very high level movement skills and also did do freestyle wrestling when he was younger so unlike many martial artists who like to talk about fighting grapplers he had some experience. But (and its a big but), he wasn't in the business of training fighters or full time combat athletes and as you rightly point out he didn't pressure test a lot of this stuff.

    They practice the northern Wu style of taichi. Their master Wang Peisheng was known primarily for his taichi and is universally considered to be one of the best taichi practitioners of his generation. He learned from Yang Yuting, and then Yang Yuting's master, Wang Maozhai. Wang Maozhai was Wu Quanyou's senior disciple, and when Wu Quanyou died, Wang Maozhai taught his son, Wu Jianquan. The guy who most Wu style guys trace back to.

    UNTIL HE CAME ALONG KUNGFU TEACHERS DIDN'T TEACH TO HIS LEVEL. HE'S A BRILLIANT TEACHER THAT TEACHES A LOT (3 HR DVDS). HE HAS SET THE BAR. I WAS THERE WHEN HE BROKE AWAY FROM HIS EARLIER PUBLISHER (UNIQUE) & TOLD US HOW MUCH HE WAS GOING TO SPEND TO DOING HIS OWN BOOKS & VHS WHEN WE WERE ON THE 2ND FLOOR ON HUNTINGTON & THE COST I BELIEVE WAS $500,000 TO START. 🤯WE WERE ALL IN SHOCK & HE WANTED TO GIVE IS HIS ALL. HE IS A TRAILBLAZER UNEQUALED ALMOST A FORCE OF NATURE THAT PUSH OTHER TEACHERS TO TEACH. MY ONLY REGRET WAS THAT I WISH THAT I COULD HAVE STAYED LONGER. HE'S SIMPLE THE BEST SETTING THE BAR & FUKIEN WHITE CRANE WAS HIS ACE IN THE HOLE. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. PERIOD IT WAS POST YAN & THEN THERE IS POST KUNG FU. THE BEST THERE IS. I HOPE THAT THEY ENJOY. 👍
