I was taking a JR train from Shinjuku Station to Shimoyoshida and hiked Arakurayama Sengen Park to Chureito Pagoda to see Mount Fuji. If you are unable to get a bus ticket on the day you want to go taking the train is another option.

I went in November and you don’t need a local guide. The maps are very good after you passed the entrance.
