I’m not surprised. I spent years working for them in pharmacy and eventually went back to school because I was compounding chemotherapy for any $14 an hour. I moved to Seattle and found the same jobs offering 3 times that in pay. Sure, the cost of living is higher here, but the pay matches it. Until people there leverage their labor power via unions, UPMC will continue to run roughshod over them.

I’ve spent way too much time in the hospital, after a surgery going up to the ward I seen three nurses doing rock, paper, scissors. I asked if that was to see who got stuck with me and they all laughed. Apparently it was to see who could claim me, because I was easy. I’ve never been thrilled to be in the hospital, but that’s no excuse to be a jerk. I just think you should go above and beyond to be nice to the people that are trying to help you.

As an Old Seasoned RN in South Louisiana I can Honestly say I Personally Witnessed the Demise of The Medical Profession, I was once Honored to be a Part of. I watched the Profession go from one of caring to one of Profit. I Witnessed doctors Loosing the Freedom to practice with Evidence Based Care, Compassion treating the patient Not the tests or following The Algorithm Automated for Profit Care. They have to I was Told. New diabetics no longer given education on diet and exercise, just take these meds. No Preventative Care. They Blame Nurses calling it Burnout. They increase patient loads with a high acuity, which forces Nurses to Risk the Life and Care of the Patients. Nurses then walk away feeling responsible. Nursing has Become An Impossible Job. Its Impossible to give good patient care and We walk away feeling bad because our patients are suffering for lack of adequate staff. I went from Hospital to Hospital as They changed. I thought it was me after a while. Nurses can Not do their jobs Respectfully With Compassion and Care. Doctors can no longer practice Evidence Based Care. Now it's for Profit Automated Algorithms. And Dont Vent or Talk about it, That's Not Good. I Retired Early. If I can not give good Compasionate care then I'm staying home. Sad Times for Healthcare.

It’s not about accountability if you have a complaint about your treatment management will be able to locate and hold the staff member responsible. It’s about stalkers. As a health care worker I have had a stalker because I was nice to a client and treated them with respect and like a valued human being. I in no way broke professional boundaries but I looked them in the eye, listened when they talked and treated them with respect. It made me change my whole opinion on personal information disclosure. Healthcare workers are with patients at a time when they are vulnerable sometimes treating them with kindness and respect and be misinterpreted by an individual looking for connection. It is imperative that access to personal information be limited if human courtesy and kindness will be twisted into something it is not. You cannot know who will form an improper connection to you in a time of stress so it is safer for all staff if only one name is used. This does not mean staff are not held accountable for their treatment of patients.

Erica, From a patients perspective in the age of Biden-Harris federally mandated transparency coupled with the fact that Doctors are normally required to display their ID photo with full name and designations it is a valid request. While you disagree, you admit there are far too many practice and prescription errors keeping patients from even considering going to a hospital or doctor’s office not to mention medical charting and records errors which negatively affect both patient history and billing not to mention insurance. Additionally, formal nurse complaints within hospitals, ANA, etc have increased dramatically due to irresponsible, sarcastic, injurious and mendacious behavior. I truly want nurses to feel safe and secure in their professional environment but patients require certitude of staff identity as well. If you’re not confident enough to honor what both doctors and patients must abide by with ever increasing ID security protocols using “just culture” as a justification of incompetence then this is not the job for you. I’ve seen too many people languish, hurt and die in hospitals and hospice to be dissuaded.

Absolutely not! Do NOT claim that I have said things that I've never said! I don't tolerate deflective communication. My confidence is overflowing but my safety should not be dependent on your insecurity and obvious lack of understanding. Hard stop! Nurses are assaulted, permanently disabled, raped and killed AT WORK on a daily basis but you really think your need for constant reassurance is somehow more important. Have a seat and continue hiding behind your anonymous account. You clearly do not comprehend the meaning of just culture. But it sounds good and you think it will give your response some validity. It does not. Stop trying so hard.

@@thenurseerica9094 Patient care and security override any nurse’s ego. You most certainly have admitted and published content discussing nurses who have violated their professional ethics and commitment to beneficence. Wrong, missed and computer overridden med dosages, treating patients poorly, etc are topics you’ve covered and how “just culture” is used as not only a bastardized tool to gloss over errors but a convenient mask for being tired, overworked, distracted even apathetic by mostly sloppy nurses who hurt patients who suffer the consequences. I don’t believe all nurses are like this at all yet you agree there are too many growing patient grievances, ANA complaints, lawsuits, strikes, etc to prove the nursing profession requires drastic reform. Patients deserve better as I know you agree. If your claims of on the job violence were meritorious with standing, where’s the ANA action and additional armed security? In fact you spoke DIRECTLY with Dr. Debbie Hatmaker PHD, RN, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer of the American Nurses Association (ANA) on your joint Nurses Uncorked podcast. What was her verbal and actionable response to your claims? Any new federal or state mandates?? Are you suing the ANA, hospitals, US Department of Health and Human Services, etc??? PS It is you who is hiding your full name because your confidence is clearly not “overflowing”. Don’t inveigh at me because you’re unable to control your emotions either. You need to calm down and be civil. I merely cited valid reasons for my concerns from the patient’s perspective and have been respectful about ID in a professional medical setting.

I know I'm clearly more knowledgeable in this area than you are, Lady. Nurses are different than doctors. I guess that was too complicated for you, Bernice Hernandez. Doctors are with patients for 0.2 seconds. Nurses are with them all day, everyday. We are the ones denying their requests, performing often painful procedures and relaying bad news. Which is why nurses statistically are always at a much greater risk aggression from patients and visitors. And NO, nurses do not always have their full name on their badge. That is factually incorrect. And I am Nurse Erica, thanks for asking.
