How I PAINT a Watercolor Pet Portrait Commission: Part 2
Переглядів 28814 днів тому
In the first part video, I discussed how I PREPARE to paint a pet portrait commission, and in this video, I talk about my watercolor painting process start to finish on this adorable pit bull! There are allll kinds of mistakes in this video, so enjoy my blunders! Also, I DID end up making a very thin white mat border for all of these, it just adds a level of fancy that I cannot resist! Thank you for bravely putting it out there for all of us to see! I always see artists making videos of their “sketchbook tours” and they usually are so perfect it kinda demotivates me by feeding the perfectionist inside. Like “I’ll never be able to make it that good and clean on each page”. By showing us the real journey you took you make a real difference! Also your obsession with paper is understandable, it’s just so fun to play with different types and textures! Seeing as you have quite a lot of mounted pieces do you make those yourself as well? And if so could you please share your process? I found your video on stretching to be really easy to understand so I hope you’ll cover mounting as well❤
Thank you so much for your comment and your awesome feedback! I really appreciate knowing that this helps people! As far as mounting goes, I kind of just "wing it" and I am 100% sure I am doing it wrong! I have stopped mounting artworks and instead just sandwich them between a peice of foam core board and a mat border. I could TOTALLY show how I do that as well as make mat borders! Thanks for the video idea!😘
thank you for such a detailed explanation of your process! You've mentioned Da vinci AI app, could you elaborate on hot to use it? Do you make a traceable lineart there?
Thank you! Yes, it’s called DaVinci Eye. (NOT AI😊) It uses your phone’s camera and whatever picture you want to trace so you can trace on any size paper. It has a learning curve, but it’s a game changer. I make traceables for my workshops using my ipad pro and procreate.
@@ashleyhawkeswatercolor thank you! 💜🙏🏻
Wow that is soo amazing!
Thank you friend!🩷
Gorgeous! I noticed you sprayed your watercolors with something. But it didn't look like water. What was it?
Thank you! It was water! The bottle just has a pink ombre coloring:)
Yay. I was finally able to sit down and watched the entire video. I absolutely love your style. ❤. I started water color about 2 years ago. I really want to paint dogs and other animals. I have watched many many UA-cam watercolor artists and tutorials. You are definitely a favorite. Its a ton of work to do what you are doing. I appreciate it so much. 😊
It means SO much to hear you recognize the amount of work this takes, and I am SO happy to do it! I am so thrilled that you and others are benefitting from it and that my teaching style resonates! I appreciate you being here! (and I just shipped off your dot card and paper!🥳)🩷
That eye! It’s amazing
Thank you! Eyes are my favorite!
Right now on my farm we have three little 4 week old orphan kitties. I think I'm going to try to paint them! Great painting and song selection as always :D That eye is :o wow!
OHHHH kittens!! Yes, paint them!! Lots of wet-in-wet for those soft furry babies!!
Very interesting to see 😊 thanks for sharing! I have also kept all my paintings since the start. My first cat was so cross-eyed; I can still laugh about it with my friends 😂 I’m highly critical of myself, so when art fails, I really need to learn how to put it in perspective, see it as a way to learn what not to do and what did work😊 so it’s lovely to see how you’ve grown to such amazing art😍
Also nice to hear you’ve followed skillshare classes as well! Currently switching between 1 class & 1 of my own design😊
I love a good cross-eyed cat now and then! 🤣 Thanks for sharing! I love this beautiful journey we all get to experience when we make art! 🩷
If you scan your paintings, do you think the wax affects the quality of the scan?
No, it won’t! I have had many paintings scanned after waxing and it has always been great!
Congratulations!!
🥳
I have a lot of swatch cards too. It’s kind of embarrassing how I changed my palettes over the years and the amount of palettes I have…
Making palettes is so fun!!
@ashleyhawkeswatercolor I have 3 or 4 travel palettes. 2 big palettes with half pans and a few palettes that have wells... For some people it would be too much but I love them all.
Thank you for sharing, you’re giving me hope for the future! ❤
There's ALWAYS hope!! The journey getting there is the fun part!! Thanks for watching!
Congrats Janie!! 👏 Thanks for the chance at the contest Ashley!
You are so welcome!!
I have piles and piles of what I call my "ugly art." I really liked the circle palette swatches, they were pretty.☺ It would be a fun livestream to watch you improve your "failed" art pieces live. I'm especially interested in the Pollyanna the Goat painting!
Love it!! 😊 Thanks so much!!
If you know how to finish your friend's dog painting, I'd be interested in seeing that.
Great! Thanks for the feedback!! 🩷
Me too! I love to see the revisions you’d make.
Love your style. Soooooo fun. 😊
Thanks so much 😊
I love this so much! Now I'm singing the Monster Mash and craving a Halloween painting session! Puppy's got a great costume!
That is awesome! Dooo it! 👻✨😊
How do I join?
I will send you the zoom link
Beautiful!!!
Thank you so much!!
soooo cute love it!
Thank you! 😊
Can you share with me how you do your lives with your camera, phone and computer?
Of course! I use a webcam called ElGato Facecam that sits on top of my computer screen to show my face. My computer (imac mini) connects my phone as my overhead camera. Then I bring it all together with the program OBS Studio, which is totally free and awesome. Just takes a bit to learn all the whistles and bells. I’m still a newbie myself. You start a stream on UA-cam, then go to OBS Studio and connect it.
Thanks so much! I don’t have any subscriptions yet so I can’t stream, but I am excited to make some videos!
Ashley, please don’t listen to the naysayers! You do not have to edit a single thing and your videos are INVALUABLE!!! Please keep doing what you’re doing! You will be at a million subs before you know it, just being you!!!
Thank you!! 😊
Amazing job I use this wax as well 👍❣
It's so good!
@@ashleyhawkeswatercolor😊You I agree 😊

Thank you friend!!
Thank you so much for this great idea of keeping a notebook with ALL the info about the painting-especialy paint colors. So often I forget things about the painting Ive sold other than a photo I take of the finished project. Would love to know how you made it with the spiral edge. I just received my shipment of the soft watercolor paper you recommend. Can't wait to use it!
You are most welcome! Glad it was helpful! Enjoy the paper!! The spiral edge was made with this kit: a.co/d/gDvKCaS

O I'm in the Netherlands thats so sweet of you but that's going to be way to much but thank you for considering!!!
I love it. Question….you said you will cut it off the board tomorrow…why don’t you pull the tape off, or is it the gummed tape. TIA
Exactly! It is gummed paper tape and has to be cut off:)
Very nice Ashley! I missed the very first but then finished out the live watching you paint. I too watercolor and it was very nice watching someone who actually knows how to watercolor and then to have you share your techniques with us. I do know (as I’m sure you do too) that when it comes right down to it, it’s a matter of instinct and having a good eye. Knowing where to highlight and where to darken. It’s subjective how to ruffle it up or paint it smooth. There are hundreds of little decisions that the artist makes that are instinctual. You have very good instinct and I really enjoyed watching you paint. Nice job! I really enjoyed watching a good watercolor artist!
Thank you so much, I appreciate you being here and taking the time to comment! Your words are very wise! You are absolutely right, it is a matter of instinct, and those instincts develop over time and experience! I see so many folks who deeply WANT to paint but are afraid so they just binge other artists on UA-cam, and while it is a great resource, we have to actually FEEL what it's like to paint to be able to cultivate that intuition!
Please let us know if you find the larger pencil case-it looks perfect for what I need!
I know!! I’m still searching! I’ll bet Temu has it! I don’t use Temu anymore, but you could check!
