Beautiful scope
This combo machine can do threading
The old Smithys are junk. Hopefully the newer ones have improved.
Don't do anything you can't undo😮.
How about the key in the chuck!
Mike thx for sharing and taking the time to make this video. I loved the mountings that you made. The built in covers are excellent. Longitudinal mounting was ingenious. I was on the fence as to which DRO to buy the Absolutes or the non-absolutes after your comment about the 1 thou accuracy that's good enough for me as well.
NEVER LEAVE CHUCK IN LATHE-NEVER!
Sirs I would like to warn potential buyers of the smithy brand of machine after I got my machine not knowing how a lathe is suppose to run I could never get a smooth finish on my turnings when I finally discovered that clutch mechanisms was wrapped and would vibrate the machine I tried to get Smithy service to help me repair it it is now 1 year later after 15 e-mails and several calls that no one will answer or call you back I have started to warn people of the way this company treats its customers after they already have gotten all the money they think there going to get out of you so if you are planning to purchase one of these machines all I can say is DON'T DO IT
Nice video Mike! Greatly appreciated! I recommend that you consider filming the machining and then do a voice-over later so that your voice can be clearly heard. Nice!
What DRO is that?
Where did you buy the collet system?
FWIW, I bought a collet system from China. They're easily obtainable. I had to make a new tension rod but that was easy with some allthread. One of the best upgrades I've made. The DRO was the absolute best.
Do you have any experience with the smithy 4 jaw chuck?
I had to rebore my mill head and chrome plate the spindle quill to fit snug. Also replaced original bearings with needle bearings. Much better if you don't overload it.
I can't hear you.
I have a 90s vintage 1220 XL I can not for the life of me get the taper cut out of the lathe. I feel like the gear head is out of whack on the bed.
Do you have a source for the change gears other than Smithy or someone 3D printing them?
I'm converting mine to steppers on the lead screws (replacing the Y with a ball screw) as the sacrificial gear hub is all but discontinued. The alternative was to rebuild the entire gearing assembly to accommodate Grizzly gears. They're fairly universal.
Is the tailstock mt2 on that machine
How do I change the direction of turn, clockwise or counterclockwise, on the spindle?
Thanks for sharing! Hey are you still using those old round belts or is there V groove belts available at the local parts store?
Hi Mike, great video, the little attachment for the spring loaded detent handle at 4.49, could you describe what it does or how to make one please. Thanks
How was your machine setup to use as a lathe when you wanted to use it as a lathe. I must always reinstall the chuck and tool post first.
I drilled a stud pattern in a 6 inch spacer on a 6 inch rotary table. Made a 1/2 thick aluminum sacrifice plate with a 2 inch center hole with a step to 2 - 1/2 , 1/4 from the bottom. Made a plate to fit under the sacrifice plate of 2 - 1/2 stepped down to 2 inch with a 1/2 threaded hole. Run a stud from the lower plate up through the spacer and bolted it down with another round plate. Worked great
I have the same exact machine. Your digital readouts are great. Where u live. Im gonna come steal them. 😁. Seriously though. Those are nice. My machine is 15 years old and run hard and put up dirty. Yours is nice and clean.
What a very useful piece of equipment. Thanks for sharing this. ua-cam.com/video/-3gpGTVfPw4/v-deo.html
Well done, a very good solution for a frustrating problem.
Shoot a little wd 40 on the part and it will keep the aluminum from sticking to the tool.
What size vise is that in the video a 4” or a 5” or other?
What kind of DRO are you using on your smithy?
What are the digital indicators I see in this video?
Please make a video on how to setup this. I tried to do dual monitor via hdmi splitter on Xbox 360 but it just duplicates the screen.
You need 3 Xbox 360s and 3 copies of the game
Why do a video and not mention the company?
Can you make a video on your cable connections on how you did this?
You need 3 Xbox 360s and 3 copies of the game
what is the largest scope that you build? I have a roof top installation I am considering I have flat done area that I am building and want to put a telescope of about 60 ft or more
Can knock them out a cheap cnc mill in big numbers
Mike, Love to have some more detail of the x axis carriage stop.
Where did you get the dro’s
Those dros are available on ebay.
Mike, where did you buy your DRO for your smithy?
Hello, name is Mark. If This is still available I could be interested. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place but don't see listing price $. please send all the info if your still wanting to sell. Thanks Mark
i will do this to my clark i have a lot of play in mine also
I see that 2014 is when you posted your video. I assume that is about when you purchased and started to use it new. Was the DRO built in to the machine when you purchased it or did you add it in later (was it an add on)? I want something like this, but access to Stores in my area is a problem. I would like to ask (hope you don't mind) if you would allow me to know the price of your machine in 2014? Have they changed much do you think? I want accuracy and precession and I'm not sure if you're painting a picture for me to look elsewhere? One last point - I see this machine has the overhead mill coming over the chuck. There are some other machines that have the mill in the middle of the carriage - meaning it is movable sideways or not but if fixed, it is farther away from from the chuck for more room to mill. There may be issues with that design too. Well overall, what is your opinion now? I'm going to search for other videos you may have posted to see if there are updates. Thanks.
Nice! Very detailed explanation. I liked this video. Also, nice shop set up.
great tool, every household need one
Good work for sure, couldn't hear a work, though it needs a lot more volume on the voice
Hi, I am from India , recently i have bought Orion xt8 Classic Dobsonian. Couple of days back while using telescope , my 25 mm plossl eyepiece botton metal part accidentally hit primary mirror and small black coat inside of metal part of eyepiece stick to primary mirror. By 25mm eyepiece while watching moon , it look good. But using barlow 2X n 25mm eyepiece to see Jupiter on full zoom , not sure but i think that black coat scratch on primary mirror is shown in eyepiece. Please let me know, What to do: Does it really effect on light gathering. Do i need to clean it , if yes please tell me simple way, as i am first time user. Or it wouldn't effect the view.
I have the grizzly g9729 lathe /mill combo which is almost identical to your machine , in fact the mill heads are exact ! I have the same problem with end play in the quill but all you have to do is use the quill lock just enough so you can still move the spindle down into your work and it will take all the play right out of it ! The set screw is only there so the quill wont turn , use the quill lock , just snug it so you can still move the quill down .
man thts an expensive machine vice did she came with machine or u bought separate?
Someone may have asked this already, but I'm wondering if you've found the lathe features of the Smithy to be adequate (threading, basic turning operations)?
without a equatorial mount how do you keep a deep space field of view with high magnification centered?
These scopes typically have Altitude and Azimuth servo motors (Servo Cat system) that slew to desired locations in the sky and then track at the sidereal rate. They are also outfitted with encoders and a digital setting circle computer (either Nexus or Argo Navis) that once calibrated with the sky will accurately point the scope.
What about magnets?
What size is the quick change tool holder do you have on this machine? Is it an AXA or BXA? Was it difficult to adapt to this machine?
