Why is Mumbai unlivable? | Real Deal | Zoru Bhathena with Vishal Bhargava | Podcast |
In this episode of the Real Deal, I talk to the high-profile citizen activist of Mumbai - Zoru Bhathena.
He is the perpetual thorn in governing bodies of India’s commercial capital.
Zoru speaks on the pervasive corruption that ensures Mumbai’s roads are built poorly and frequently. He views the suburb of Bandra as being the worst managed in Mumbai. He calls the slum redevelopment policy as one of the biggest scandals in the city. He believes slum redevelopment is not done keeping the slumdweller in mind.
He calls Dharavi Redevelopment a real estate project as government wants to displace people from Dharavi and relocate them elsewhere.
As a big opponent of the Metro Carshed in Aarey, he recounts his experience in dealing with the former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. He refers to the constant gobbling of plots meant for the public that are auctioned by the municipal corporation.
Hear him out.

If Bombay had more concerned citizens like Zoru, expressing views strongly, it will not be Scambay!
Thank god. Now Goa will get its glory back.
Not just Mumbai-- India itself is a basket case. To little, too late.
Don't agree with the point about Slum dwellers. Very few look at SRA as money making opportunity. 90% people really aspire to stay in a building apartment! Especially the young generation. So its a wrong assumption to begin with. I don't think there are many people who have sold their SRA apartment and started living back in slum to get another apartment to sell! People sell all the time, but nobody can do this as a business in single lifetime because slums can take decades to develop. Secondly you said your driver and other servants come from slum, so if they are moved to a building in Dahisar they wont come to do your work. This is not a nice view in my opinion. All people deserve to live in good condition. Just go to Dharavi and see, its unlivable place! Government for sure is making money, but its not of concern to common people, as long as they get a good life. Because Gov will continue making money no matter what. Its their basic function in our country! So common people have the right to be selfish and think for themselves rather than worrying about Governments.
The truth of Mumbai. All Mumbaikars should support him as he is saying the truth.
Rafique merchant is being politically 0:20 correct on the religion issue.... he does nto wnat to upset his gujju marwadi buyers.... he shud go n read the constitution.. u cannot have ur marwadi gujju village mentality in cities... it's discrimination on basis of religion ur eating choices and ur freedom why are maharshtrian then not allowed in these societies. they celebrate the same festivals? 😂
GOA is Heaven ❤
The last line about mimbaikars apathy to their own problem is so true … “apna kya” or “Apun kya karega” is the forever refrain …
I wish he had asked as to why manhole covers on roads not fixed or installed properly without them becoming manholes in 6 months
Satya Meva Jayate, Truth Alone Triumphs, Jai Hind
Actually the buildings around airport tower are older...and residents not getting redevelopment benefit hence require to move it to gorai
Finally Someone said it 😂
Great Podcast..I think unless the common people hits the streets and demand their rights its never going to change..
Navi Mumbai Airport was to come up in 1987 as per CIDCO marketing Dept of that time. Till today it is yet to start after 37 years but builders have been selling their inventory on advertising of the CIDCO & Maharashtra Government.
Amazing podcast.. Expose more!
We need a toll free number asap to atleast record all our grievances.
No city in the world saw any real reduction in traffic due to metro
Extremely insightful podcast. No bullshit
Infra guys from twitter/X - 🤬 Normal public - 😅👍
Avoid Goa
Mumbaikars are fooled by appreciating their so-called "MUMBAI SPIRIT"....its time for them to wake up and take their Mumbai welfare and development back in their hands. Speak up...let these politicians know that we will not take any s***t from them. Jai Hind...Jai Maharashtra...
Lot of things about SRA he said is his view not actual. For one ppl dont need slum dwellers to run their house. This man needs.
Dhakan hein kuch bhi bolta hein. Kaafi meko BS laga.

Its a pity to see your city dying in front of you the gardens you played in as child dirty with many illegal hawkers...throwing garbage around n this all becoz of dishonest officials eho give them license to many n they are increading by the day giving money to these officials so more tge merrier... how other countries stay so clean 😢
You look like u come from a place where you don't even have water in your washroom 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Damn good, finally we can save Goa, thank you tourists - go to other south eastern nations' beaches and save India from the pollution
Zoru is an absolute legend. 95% of the time you can't argue with him coz he debates on facts , not opinion. As an individual, it's no small feat to be able to stand up to the plethora of sarkars and mafias that infest the cesspool that is Mumbai. Really, hats off to this guy for exposing all the issues of Mumbai since decades.
S R A ko makdi ka jala banaya he salo tak project pura nahi hota he 3 generation aa jati he per ghar nahi milta or sale nahi kar sakte. Best bus time se chalaye to her koi bus use karega.

vishal .. have you left Reliance🤔
If possible one should move to Dubai, Singapore and other better cities/ countries.
true the future of all cities which are hotspots of the development is same sadly
Mumbai is a gone case now and nothing can be done to due corruption, vote bank.
I wish every Mumbaikar who has the power to improve our city sees this podcast. Ofcourse it'll be a marathon task.
FABULOUS ABSOLUTELY TRUTHFUL CONDITION OF OUR #MUMBAI The most corrupt BMC & Government (read adani) hope Mumbikars wake up & take action OR get ready to migrate out of this mess of city. BANDRA suburbs + BMC H-WEST ward is the WORST part of #Mumbai
Zoru is a selfless hero. More power to him. The BMC and the builder lobby have destroyed the city. No two ways about it. They are pillaging.
It was really an eye-opener
Excellent Podcast. Wish we mumbaikars could do something rather than just watch and complain 🙂
99.99% of Mumbaikars living life of being scammed and drug themselves with hate politics and pollution.
Great to see someone speaking and standing up. Kudos 👏
very nice bathuta bhai
I am an Architect, I have lived in a slum in Mumbai. Almost everyone wants redevelopment but not for better quality of life. Most of the people living there don't have the same ideas of quality of life and aesthetics as we have. They quite like the flexibility of the space, the autonomy of making changes to their individual units, the community. Many that I have studied have committees and function almost like housing societies. Also, its not just free housing really, a lot of these slum dwellers are second dwellers - have bought these houses paying almost 1/3rd the price of the apartments because the apartments are unaffordable to lower middle class Mumbaikars. All they want the redevelopment for is capital appreciation. Everyday conversations are "Price value of my house will increase after redevelopment" Converting these horizontal slums to vertical slums makes a profit for everyone, the slum dweller, the developer, and the local politicians. Sadly, nothing changes for the city.
