de Havilland Mosquito at Warbirds Over Wanaka - 30th and 31st March 2024
Attendees at Warbirds Over Wanaka 2024 were fortunate to see the ex-RNZAF de Havilland (DH98) Mosquito NZ2308 which had just completed a fifteen-year restoration in Auckland. The American owners generously agreed to allow the aircraft to fly at the airshow before being dismantled and shipped to its new home in the US.

If you go here, you can see a nice flight p-47. UA-cam "team mustang"
What about the Fury 1 powered by the Sabre 7 ?) 3000, plus HP
The wright engine does not sound as good as the original Centaurus.
Too bad you can’t hear the Fury over the geezer.
Thanks Ray, you’ve captured the dynamism of the Mossie in this video. I believe the Mossie to be the best multi-role aircraft to come out of WW2, but then I’m biased. Pity it's leaving our backyard. Well done and I look forward to your next venture.
How does the engine cool when so tightly cowled.
That's quite the spinner. Happy to see these flying still (with any engine + prop combo) ❤
The 'original' Fury was the fastest piston engined fighter...ever
Thank you Ray. Wonderful video showing what I consider the best WW2 fight/bomber produced. I had the priviledge of 2-3 fly over my house many years ago here in Wellington. Beautiful machines.
Good to see the Mossie in the Southern Hemisphere. Understandably the owner from USA to wants see it go it's new home. Hopefully it might come back in the future. I met a retired RAAF Wing - Commander (Retired). He flew a Hurricane, a number of different versions of Spitfires, Mustangs, Kittyhawkes and the Mosquito. He said the Mossie was in his expericne the far and best all round aircraft produced by the Allies.
A well-structured and professionally presented video Ray, well done! 👍
The Hawker Sea Fury had a 5 bladed propeller not a 4. due to the 4's diameter being too large for carrier work. The Hawker Tempest had the 4 bladed prop.
Depends on the engine
Why the hell was the cherry picker there? Bloody amateurs. That’s bloody dangerous.
The Yak-110 is in Australia now?
Nope, just for Airshow
Beautiful aircraft 👍🏻
Fantastic aircraft, but I personally think that the original Bristol engine sounds so much better.
What a great aircraft.
No mention of this particular airframe’s history as “Sawbones” a Reno racer for many years. But cool to see her flying again. I could be wrong but that spinner is very distinctive.
Hi Thomas, Check out the link in the video’s description for an article about the history of this particular aircraft. Cheers, Ray
Why do they always play screaming music every time there is an air craft start-up or display. I go to air Shows to see and HEAR the bloody aircraft not ya shit music. Really! I want to hear those iconic big radials and smell their fumes and to be immersed in the aircraft not music. TURN it OFF Please.
i remember back in 2002 i was on holiday in lord howe Island and there was a sea fury flying around..dont know why but it was an awesome sight.. to me the loveliest of the prop fighters
Dump that annoying background music.
Thank you! Love how she climbs like a homesick angel.
That's a beautiful warbird.
Piston powered perfection.
pity it hasnt got the original bristol centaur engine :(
It's a Centaurus not Centaur
Still a shame not to have it
@@DeepseaSteve But IF it takes an American engine to fly it soooo be it !!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 yeah I get the availability but original is good too
Why oh why do they need to play trashy music at Air shows like this and far too loud ?
Exactly!
And commentators continuously spouting away as well !
Please ditch the music a air shows. We wanna hear the planes.
amazing airshow video
Nice.very lucky 🇬🇧
Worried about the commentator (public address) using the word "aircrafts" as the plural. The plural of "aircraft" is "aircraft".
One of my pet hates !
👍
Beautiful aircraft and restoration! We had a Ford Tri-motor the "Tin Goose" flying passengers to and from the Lake Erie Islands and it is currently under a restoration effort. Hope to fly o it one day!
Call me an old fuddy-duddy if you like but I always think that a Sea Fury with a 4-blade prop just looks wrong.
Same here, I know there is a shortage of available Centaurus engines versus air worthy Airframes but the four bladed prop and American engine replacement just looks and sounds wrong on such a beautiful aircraft ,.... exactly the same as the mk2 Lancaster with four Bristol Hercules engines - just plain wrong . but both pale into insignificance when compared with a Buchon HE 1112 - a BF 109 with a flaming MERLIN !!! and buchon made hundreds of them after the war..............I know in 1969 there werent that many air worthy 109's. but because of that aircraft and that other gem the Casa c2.111 - a merlin engined HE111.....I cringe at watching the Battle of Britain movie.....thank god there were enough Merlins still about .....imagine what an abortion a mk 1 Spitfire would have looked with a DB 601 or a Jumo in it !
zebop Well you can be aon old fuddy-duddy but the plane is flying, IF the original over engineered, complicated piece of crap was any good it would still be in the plane ! !
@@wilburfinnigan2142 I'm sure its easier to keep an R-2800 running compared to a Centaurus and I agree that its nice to keep flying things actually flyable. I just wonder how hard it would be to fit a 5-blad prop onto an R-2800 and get the looks right.
Sea fury always had 4 bladed prop
@@zebop917 The problem is the USA prop shafts on its engines are not the same as the Brits, who just have to be back assward, Their engines were left hand, American engines turn to the right, so 5 blade won't work plus the Brits engines have a different sized prop shaft and splines. so they have to use the American 4 bladed prop on the American engine !! !
1:20 in, the original engine was a Bristol CentauRUS not a Centaur......go hang your head in shame, lol !! but no seriously I absolutely loved the vid, there's not nearly enough coverage of such a lovely Aircraft, btw a quick rule of thumb to determine which particular engine is in a specific aircraft, although there can be exceptions sometimes, is the Centaurus ALWAYS has a five bladed prop the American Engine is usually a four blader. For my money the centaurus wins hand down for engine sound, the engine note is smoother yet fussier than the American engines and to my mind sounds far more business like with a lovely subdued hum/whistle from its supercharger as it passes overhead. As on this particular example the trainer version with its double length canopy detracts from the aircrafts business like look - take a look at the standard fighter version to see what I mean.
Thanks for the extra info. A friend already pointed out my error with the engine name. I didn’t want to delete and repost the video, so I put a Correction in the Description. Cheers, Ray
username....you may not like the fact it has a 4 bladed prop and an AMERICAN engine but it is FLYING !!!! Something it cannot do with its original over engined complicated piece of junk engine, if they were any good it would still be in the plane !!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 You might like to know that the smaller brother of the Bristol Centaurus - the Bristol Herculese - was in routine service up to 1985, in the French Nord Noratlas. So maybe those Bristol sleeve-valve radials were not quite the pieces of junk you call them.
@@dafyddllewellyn6636 Over engineered, overly complicated and expensive to overhaul and maintain, like I said IF they were any good they wood still be in the planes !!
@@wilburfinnigan2142 The main reason, I suspect, is that nobody is making 145 octane fuel these days. And learn to spell . . .
I don't remember the Connie with favor. March 1970 they were used as awacs ,one developed problems and crashed on top of us. Luckily we only lost an F4 and no personnel but it was a scramble getting the rest of our planes away from the fire. Sadly the personnel on board weren't so lucky.
That was a NAVY Constellation that stalled and crashed on landing at Da Nang. The #3 engine was shut down, but that shouldn't have had any bearing on the landing... I have 2500 hours on USAF EC-121's, and probably 25-30 "3 engine landings".
😃Wow! STUNNING!👍
These beauties back in their hey days would fly passengers from Sydney to London. (!)

Hi there did the Kawasaki C2 did air display over the weekend on 4th and 5th March
Hi Jason. No, it didn't fly this year.
A Hudson! Amazing.
Awesome footage. Thanks for sharing
I am very privileged to have flown in a Super Connie in 1966, my first and best ever as a passenger.
A BF109 with a Merlin?????? That's like putting a Chevy engine in a Ford
The Spanish versions developed during and after ww2 had Merlin’s fitted to them.
My thoughts exactly mate, sacrilege.
I watched a couple texans got into the nelson airport the other day
Enjoyed the video thanks
hey
Lots of stuff ive never seen or heard of, nice video

I know this video is older but does anyone know if the Yak 3 was repaired and still flying today?

Yep it’s been restored to airworthy condition.
