How to align your router’s antennas if it utilizes beamforming technology
If your router utilizes beamforming technology (as most newer routers do), it makes your life a whole lot easier when it comes to configuring your router’s antennas.
This is due to the fact that with beamforming, your router will automatically “steer” the WiFi signals that it broadcasts to the devices it is communicating with. In other words, you don’t have to do any of the manual “aiming” of your WiFi signals with the antennas of a non-beamforming router.
So what does this mean for your beamforming router’s antennas?
You should leave them vertically aligned (i.e. straight up and down). This will make it easier for your router to perform the background calculations necessary to determine the location of the devices that are communicating with it.
If you need further convincing, these instructions will likely be included in the Quick Setup Guide that comes with your router.
See? It really is that easy.
Cheers to router technology innovation!

What about shielded vs unshielded? Someone said this might matter but shielded might actually be worse if neither end is grounded?
I have that link speed of 100Mbps but here is the catch. When I connect it via ethernet port from router to my pc it gives me around 100Mbps (Not more than 100) but when I connect it with Dial-Up from direct my Uno to my pc it just goes up to 600Mbps. Why this happen? Is there any solution?
*laughs in concrete *
It increased when I chose Auto Negotiation instead of 2.5 Gbpe
This person is talking sanctimonious boring claptrap
Manual said for beaming to work keep antenna straight up. And my testing confirmed that any other positions actually worsen speed. The need to be perfectly aligned and parallel with eachother. If you need a signal in a basement, better use repeater (wired or moca)
I came across this when I was looking for something else. The information here seems a bit dated. I pay for 1.5Gb/s and typically test at about 1.8Gb/s, which is fine for the PC with the 2.5Gig card in it wired to the 10G port on the modem, but my local router is 1 gigabit, and I was wondering if there was something that could be done about it other than getting a much more expensive router.
If your router is only rated for 1 Gbps, I’m surprised you are experiencing speeds faster than 1 Gbps in your network. Your router would serve as a bottleneck in this situation and the maximum speeds you should see are 1 Gbps. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about this unless you replace your router, but at the same time I would be surprised if you need more than 1 Gbps of bandwidth in your home network. You should have more than enough bandwidth for anything you want to do on the internet. I hope this helps!
@@network-from-home The router and the modem are 2 different and seperate devices. The modem is capable of incredible speeds and has a 10Gb/s ethernet plug, and 4 1Gb/s plugs. The router simply has 5 1Gb/s plugs (connections). The network thustly is 1Gb/s except for the 1 desktop system which has a 2.5Gb/s card, which is wired to the modem's 10Gb/s port. The modem to the ISP is usually getting 1.7 to 1.8 Gb/s - faster than my router (wired - not wireless, and not part of the modem)
I used to get 900mbps on ethernet cable to my ps5 and now it won’t see over 75mbps, nothings changed it just suddenly stopped giving me the same speed. Any ideas?
No, my antennas are grey, is that a problem? Please advice.
I'm an electrical engineer and I had the same thought. I know of 2 bands that common wi-fi uses, and usually each frequency has a different antenna. So maybe the low band, which is better at penetrating walls is the one you'd angle to another floor, and the high band is vertical (in this guy's router anyway). But, like you said, these antennas are rarely marked. I guess one needs to devote 1/2 day to try various configurations and see which one works best. At least until you turn on your microwave oven! Wait a minute... wasn't all this tech supposed to make our lives easier and more productive? Pfftttt!
HELP!!!! What if the information on the sticker of my modem is not allowing me to enter? I'm already connected to the wi fi, but I want to set up a guest wifi, but I can't log in into the modem settings after I enter to IP to my explorer, it continues saying is the incorrect name or password!
These antennas are here most for aesthetics. In this particular router, those antennas are connected to the 5ghz transceiver. The wavelength is the bare minimum, and the antenna length for this kind of wavelength is millimeters long and eradiates like a little spotlight. But what about this big plastic piece? It's just plastic. It doesn't matter what the antenna position of this kind of router is.
Where have you been all my wifi😭
😂😂very clever
Same here, I had each antenna pointing in all sort of different angles 😆 (Asus RT-AX3000 Router) Great video! Thank you, your fan and subscriber from Sydney, Australia.
That’s a great approach! Thank you for following the channel all the way from down under!
Awesome video, but could have been told everything within a short video.
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. I have been working to make my videos more concise, so hopefully my more recent videos are more useful to you!
Antenna signal direction as described in the video is important, but probably less important than the polarization when using WiFi indoors. This is because you also have to take into account the polarization of the receiving antenna which will be widely affected by the indoor transmissions because of reflections and diffraction effects. This is what you referred to when you explained how the radio signal is emitted from the antenna. If your receiving antenna has a horizontal orientation and the transmitting antenna is vertically oriented then the coupling between the transmit and receive antenna is not very good (and vice versa). This is further complicated because of the many reflections indoors. Generally reflections and diffractions indoors do not change the vertical or horizontal polarization of a radio signal. A good rule of thumb is to arrange the antennas in a diagonal orientation so the antenna will produce a radio signal with a good horizontal and vertical polarization. That way the antenna on your device whether oriented vertically or horizontally will get a better signal. So you'll get a better signal whether you use your phone sitting up or lying down. Most notebook computers a vertical antenna embedded in the screen and most people will not use their notebook screen at a vertical angle. This is why you get a better reception with old TVs with rabbit ear antennas when you try to adjust the angle of the "rabbit ears" in a diagonal manner and then turn them around to look for the best signal. Actually, in the US, television signals are transmitted in a horizontal orientation that's why the old outdoor TV antennas were oriented in a horizontal orientation. But when the TV signal enters a house, the signals get diffracted, refracted and reflected so they are almost never horizontal when the signal gets indoors. The TV signals acquire a vertical and horizontal orientation and so the best adjustments for a TV antenna usually happen when the antenna is arranged in a diagonal angle to catch the best of both worlds. Arranging your WiFi antenna in a diagonal direction will give you the best intermediate signal level for most devices you will connect to the WiFi router. Of course this is just a rule of thumb and actual fiddling with the antenna angles can increase or decrease signals for specific devices, especially if the device does not move around much, like your PS2. Final note, arranging your antenna to look downwards at an angle aimed at the basement will probably not help much unless you only have wooden floors. WiFi signals don't do well going through concrete. You would be better off leaving the basement door open or putting the router close to the basement door.
I need your help asap please 😆🤪🤪🤪🙆♂️🙏 So, I bought the adaptor, plugged it in, instantly connected, and didn't even ask my permission lmao. Today, the ping was very high, and I thought it was weird, so I opened the network connections and disabled it, and enabled the Wi fi one. Now, the Wired connection doesn't even appear! I tried everything my humble ignorance knows, restart every wire and device, but nothing worked. Now I am stuck with wi fi. What to do?! 🙏
HELPED!!! Thank you!
That’s great news! I’m glad this video was helpful for you
Is it ironic that I lost my wi-fi I signal in the middle of this video?
The router that goes from the tower has 4 vertical ones. But my router picking up that signal has 3 horizontal ones.
I am using a router in my garage to pick up a signal from my aunt's router 2 doors over.... Because of the trees, I can't get a good signal or even put in a tower for that matter.
The same bla bla bla, you Made thing More a Messi. You want to be in tv😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 mean nothing
My wired connection gives me about 20% of the WiFi speed, almost certainly because of the powerline adaptors and use of my electric cables transport that I use. Zoom calls occasionally stutter and the speed of moving big movie files are affected from this. The fix - connect my router with a single cat5e or cat6 ethernet cable to the main computer. It has a 2.5G connection.
Connecting your computer to your router with an Ethernet cable should definitely improve the reliability of your connection!
All 3 should be at different positions no point having them the exact same
I totally agree!
Why aren't there just all in one devices
They do make modem and router combination devices, however with these devices you have much less opportunity to customize your settings and home network
You do realise that you are monetized for 8 minute videos now rather than ten? Ffs
Cool so i while the WPS is active, anyone that see your network, they can easily connect to your network, especially if you are in a large apartment building, my advice, never use this function. and or check all the devises connected to your network after using this backdoor!! Or USE the PIN
I agree! I don’t use WPS because I just connect to my WiFi networks with the password for the WiFi network. Thank you for sharing this!
Not to mention, if you don't have many devices connected, does it really make sense to have a router to begin with? Because a normal ISP-supplied modem can support a good set of devices quite well. It seems like the only real benefit that a new router might have, realistically, is to improve your WIFI coverage and connectivity, as well as perhaps improving device battery life with new, more efficient WIFI tech. Let's face it, routers have better antennas than modems, but if your modem is crap to begin with, what good is that going to do? Also, many ISP's say "up to" in their speed listings, so oftentimes the speeds you get might be much different depending on the area you live (i.e, a high-traffic neighbourhood will slow down the areas speeds). So again, oftentimes it doesn't even make sense to buy a high end router, unless you have a lot of connected devices that need more, stronger antennas, or are interested in new WIFI tech. I think every single person needs to watch this video.
Thank you very much, I agree with you: not many people are aware of what their internet speed truly means. When you rent a device from your ISP, it is usually a modem and router combination device that performs both modem and router functionality. The downside of these devices is they usually charge you more than $10 per month to rent the equipment. If you buy your own modem and router, you can save some money in the long run (and you’ll be able to do a lot more to customize your home network)!
Get to the point, I fall asleep
Antennas or antennae?
Great information bro.
Thank you very much! I’m glad you found the video useful
if you grew up in the early years of TV and radio with antennas then you would have probably move them around to get a better picture or sound. Same principle with the router antennas but with different signals. This video gave us mere mortals some clue as what to tinker around for better reception. Some comments are far too advance for the regular folks.
Thank you very much for the support. You absolutely nailed the intent of this video: it is meant to help the everyday internet user without diving too deeply into the technical details
This guy likes to talk !
Lot of talk a lot but say nothing in ten minutes
Amazing. This whole video could be done in 60 seconds. Waste of time.
Great job...thank you.
You’re welcome! I’m glad you found this video useful
Useful to talk about backup of files. I had Western Digital NAS Cloud HD. WD decommissioned the cloud capability due to obsolete firmware after about 7 years, and it died as a NAS HD in about 10. Cost me $1,100 to retrieve the files, about 50,000. I’m still taking too much risk by not backing up to the Cloud like Apple or MS.
Oh wow, that’s really expensive (and a pain in the butt). At least you have multiple other options for backing up your files (:
Ethernet is useful if you regularly need 100-1,000 MPs speed, like moving big files constantly like video content creation or network storage. For most work, wifi at speeds over 30 Mps is adequate. HD video streaming minimum is 7-10 Mps.
I agree with you here. Also, if you’re online gaming it’s helpful to use an Ethernet cable because it reduces the ping of your connection
Just use an avm router and youre ok had the same, no need to exactly check antennas
Why is everyone in such a big hurry. The man is informative. Slow down and smell the roses !
Thank you for the support!
If we have a problem with the internet connection remaining stable will this help? Our wifi speed is fine, the problem is maintaining connection during online gaming.
If you have problems with your WiFi connection, an Ethernet cable will definitely provide a better connection. Ethernet cable connections to the internet are more stable and reliable than WiFi connections to the internet. I hope this helps!
So my old router had 2 antennas, 1 for 2.4 and 1 for 5 ghz. Guess moving 1 antenna would reduce or increase that 1 band in a certain area of the house.
NOTE: This video provides instructions for configuring your router's antennas if you have a non-beamforming router. If you have a router that supports beamforming, I made a separate video detailing how to configure your router's antennas: ua-cam.com/video/mah6R8BBUYI/v-deo.html
I haven't use WPS since Day 1 , 802.11b days
Honestly I don’t use it either, so I’m with you there!
2x speed than its good
Thank you for the feedback
just what I needed. Thanks
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the video useful
What about reflectors (metal foil etc) behind the antennas? Does that strengthen the signal and range?
