Lightning Creek, Clark Fork ID, 850cfs, 12-13-2014
The Pacific Northwest experienced above average temperatures and rain fall for the start of winter this year. Northern Idaho was no exception. During the second week of December Lightning Creek started to rise. It hit a high enough level to run, throw in good timing and call it an early Christmas gift.

North Fork of the St Joe, Avery, Idaho 4 19 14

Went up the North fork of the St. Joe river outside of Avery, Idaho. There was still a bit of snow so we drove in as far as we could and Hiked the last mile to get to "No Sweat", the best rapid on the float. Had a couple of swimmers but no serious injury's and managed to collect all the floating gear.

The Spokane is rising, 11000 cfs isn't huge but it adds a little to the flow and that can be fun. Me and a couple buddys did a quick float after work to break up the work week.

I've kayaked the N.Fork many times. We've even put in a mile or so up Loop Creek. Stories about No Sweat... a friend in 6 man raft trapped in an hole bouncing up and down & spinning like a pony for 10 minutes. We finally got a line to him. ;) Look into the Clearwater, the drive is more remote but there are some good long drops. ~~~
That was crap.
Lol!
Beautiful creek. Always wondered what it was like in there. Very nice.
Is this raftable?
How far from Clark Fork?
good stuff. i hope to make it idaho next summer.
Is that average flows? Seems high and quick for that time of year.
850 cfs is as low as that creek can be kayaked. Really 1200 cfs is best low. It was a strange December. We had a abnormal thaw. had to go for it.
You are the first people I have ever seen running Canyon Creek! It looks like it would be a decent trip. I see people on the North and East end of Wallace running the South Fork of the CDA River during the Spring run off but like I said, never Canyon Creek. Thanks for sharing. If it's okay with you, I would like to share this with others when I do another video about things to do in the Silver Valley (most likely this spring of 2016). Of course I would add link to your channel and give all the credit to you. Was Canyon Creek something you think others would enjoy?
We run the South Fork a lot. Canyon Creek can be a hard one to hit just right. A good water year opens the window for a longer time frame. It's a balls to the walls run. Very continuous class 3-4 water and super fun. I have no problems with you sharing parts or all of the video.
some of the most polluted water in the U.S. is this river
You've never been down south then.
Awesome kayaking video Subbed and LIKED
Looking great Bucky!
We look pretty good out there, if I do say so myself!
When we run this tomorrow you should take and upload a video of the trip, just a suggestion
youve got balls as big as grapefruits. do you have any idea exactly what section or what feature is the name devils toenail? nobody seems to know
The Bowl and Pitcher is at the state park camp ground. There is a foot bridge you can view the river from. If you follow the road down river there will be a pull out on the left, down the bank is the Devils toenail. It has big basalt rocks like the Bowl and pitcher. Both the Devils Toenail and bowl and Pitcher have a bit of drop and whitewater so it make them easy to identify. Oh, by the way, they'er more like the size of peas, but thanks.
ok thanks for the info. it turns out i had taken pictures from up above and had seen those rapids like the second bowl and pitcher before but didnt know people referred to them with a name thanks
What level were you boating these two runs at? I'm considering a VERY late season run @~800cfs. Thoughts?
800 is a pretty low level, but doable. The lowest I've run it is 900. This video is around 1300cfs. have fun.
what flow?
Just posted mine.
You inspired me to start kayaking
Innocent(s) on the Similkameen...
Dude I felt the rush just watching that! Lol sick man
You make me proud to be a Sturgeon right now... Other TI
I can't wait till I start kayaking and go on crazy runs like this!
Oh by the way we also call this run "shit Creek" or just "Shit, or upper shit" so check out those videos as well.
go check out "north idaho white water" on face book to get more beta.
This run starts near Wallace ID and the take out is Osburn ID. The upper part of the video is tricky class 3 water. A swim would suck. boat and paddle would be gone.
Where is the put-in/takeout for this run?
ok I will be new to this, I want to do this when I move. thanks
We'er always looking for new boaters. A lot of us are involved in the Spokane Canoe and Kayak Club. We float every wednesday on the spokane to get people started and get to know new boaters looking for a group of paddlers. look us up and check out "north idaho whitewater boating" on face book.
to Coeur d'Alene
Im moving to Idaho
cool
Nope, no change to speed. Just a fast river. Check out the bad ass in the blue boat thats in front of me through most of it.
I think I've watched this 4 times. I love it. Did you speed it up a little? Much more exciting than my stuff...
At least you didn't swim.
unless you know what to look for, you can't tell that i went through half of the big rapid upside down...
