    How does one punch in/out on a car, when working on multiple cars? Or is the shop setup so I can complete one car fully, then move to the next? Often I'm juggling between multiple racks/cars.

      In today's shop environment, a tech can certainly be working on several cars during the day. It’s not that important that ya know the time to complete each job or operation on a given ticket, but rather the total time on a vehicle. Think about it in the old days at a dealership, they used flat rate time cards to punch in & out on each vehicle. They had to do it if they wanted to get paid for the job. Surprisingly, they did it! With today’s modern software, it’s even easier as they can do it from time their tablet. This system will never be perfect, but the end goal is to see how much of their available time (Total time punched in at the shop) they are actually working on a vehicle. What vehicle in the big scope of things doesn't really matter all that much.

    What's your definition of value vs price? Example?

      Price is what they pay. Value is everything they get. For example, being treated like family, full inspection with consultation on every observation, keeping them informed all along the repair process, a nice gift in their vehicle when they pick it up, follow up call, etc. Auto repair is a commodity until you show them how you are different.

      Pricing is simply what you charge for your service and parts. Margin reflects how well the business is operating. Sure there's a small bit of overlap, because your price affects your margins -- but your fixed expenses, technician efficiency, diagnostic time, advertising costs, and all other facets of running your shop directly affect the margin (aka profit) left over.

      @@maverickshopowners I would say that i make much more on parts.looking at the jobs on the que now> Car in for Exhaust work cost of parts 600.00 sell 1200.00 Labor 2 Hours 300.00 Parts are double all the jobs We did in the last week only 2 where the other way around out of 32

    We have been your customer for years. What we found works the best and proved is a Oil Change package with lots of stuff in it fills the bays quick. We only do this once or twice a year when there is a lull in customers. You are right , our customers are the best to market to..

    The biggest problem I see is the complete lack of business mentality and sense. Without even talking about being a hands off owner you see guys all the time that have been a one man shop 5 years working 14hrs a day 7 days a week and when u ask why they don’t hire someone they almost always say “I don’t think I can afford one” well you can’t look at ur bank account to see what u can afford because ur not efficient u look at how much work you have and how it’s not getting done one tech and you helping out while running the business can get all that work done in less then 40 hours and have time to do more work to grow the business. This is thinking too small and usually these owners are the ones that rent a shop on a side street because it was only 1500 a month rather then the shop 1 mile up the road on a busy street because they don’t understand that the extra 1500 a month in rent for the good location will make you WAY more money I mean just one street traffic customer the entire month can pay the whole 3,000 in rent and then some.

    Ron said that for 99% of shop owners, selling our business is our retirement. I don't believe that this is a desirable position to be in. If the 99% number is accurate, Ron should make an effort to educate shop owners how to prepare for retirement with a more balanced plan. Normally, it is safer not to put all your eggs into one basket.

    I just happen to stumble to your UA-cam video, and you gave me some great insight on things in that end of things. The thing you guys were talking about reminded me of the thing that I read, and understood in the book call Principles by Ray Dalio, if you haven't read yet I do recommend it. Overall, it was a pretty good video.

    Ron, I've been a long-term client since the wagon wheel days. I've given the auto repair shop over to my wife, and I oversee the operation. She has a gift for working with people, something I didn't have. As a result, the shop is doing better than ever, and I don't need to send out marketing. I even did away with coupons on my website. Instead, we developed a system where we identify bottom feeders and weed them out. As for me, I spend my time making UA-cam videos and working on other business opportunities.

    This happened to me today. I was quoted a price on the phone before work was done by one employee. I was then charged an extra hundred dollars by a different employee when I picked the car up. When I went to pay with a card, I was charged an extra 3.5% on top. It was roughly $15 more than the total with tax. I asked why it was $15 more than the total given to me and he said “it’s the credit card processing fee”. I asked, “doesn’t the business owner handle that fee on their end?” He said “no”. I walked away unhappy. Bottom line? If it’s not a fee that YOU as a business are putting into your pocket, then PUT UP A SIGN TO WARN PEOPLE. I would have taken out cash to pay for the actual total if I knew I was going to be gouged another $15 on top of the already inflated bill. It’s bad practice not being honest and up front about a fee that YOU KNOW is going to catch 90% of your customers off-guard.
