Spencer Spit in the San Juan Islands
Spencer Spit is a nice sate park in the San Juan Islands and is a favorite destination for many boaters. With its long beaches, it is a lovely spot to get out and play on the beach.

The tall ship Lady Washington is a replica of the brig that was the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of America and explored Puget Sound. She tours the West coast giving rides, providing sailing adventures, and training volunteers who want to learn about sailing a tall ship.

Came to this island a long time ago. The locals were divided into 3 sects and I had a hard time figuring out which one I should join. I got stuck there for some time, and had to find a boat to get off after some guy drank some soup in front of me.

I wonder why the scuppers are so large aft ,seems it would allow the following seas right in the cockpit

Nice lines but coming Heights very low. Could fill with water in rough weather. Be safer if increased to avoid plus give more headroom.

They fail to mention that most of the strong prevailing winds are from the NE and that this bay is not a good anchorage in the winter. The roads around Blind Bay are not suitable for your dogs to "relieve themselves" and there is no walking room on the road's shoulder. Overall tourism and boaters are discouraged from coming ashore except to the store and ferry landing area.

Accurate info. I grew up on this bay and I've seen too many boats stuck on the unmarked rocks. The public roads are a great place to walk as traffic is light on Shaw, be respectful of private property. There are parks and preserves where you can explore.

...the boat's a whole lot less tender and nervous than she used to be. and I love the sprit sail. it's every bit as good to wind as my Bermuda sloop and that sprit sail is better off the wind, than the Bermuda sail. I love your schooner. if I had the money, i'd love to have one like it.

  • @666devilknight

wood makes the boat live. that's an awesome way to put it. a lot of people who sail Bermuda rigged boats decry the abilities of the four sided sail, but they are really wrong. keel type, hull shape, and sail design work together to create the sailing qualities of a boat. I have a 20' Bermuda sloop and a 10' dinghy with a boomed sprit sail and a shallow (6" deep ) full keel. she sails to wind as close as any laser. not only does the shallow keel perform as good as the dagger board used to, but...

To the best of my fairly reliable knowledge, this schooner was not built in Port Townsend, but in Nanaimo BC, by shipwright Jonathan Knowles for his own use. She was 9 years in the building (he had a day job in the boat yard!), and she was, and remains, a splendid product of the traditional shipwright's art. She was sold first to a Seattle resident, then moved on to SF.

Hi there! I know this is a pretty old video but I know this boat and was wondering if you would be willing to share any more information on her, her history, or Jonathan Knowles! I’m considering inviting Tiger to be part of my family but would like to know more.
