Jack Babington - Interview March 2023
We recently met with local autistic photographer Jack Babington, someone we also support at AWM, to discuss how autism affects him and how his photography helps with his anxiety. Jack discusses his personal experiences of education, family life and employment along with his own diagnosis.
Jack is an inspiring individual who has overcome many barriers to be where he is today and we are so pleased he could take some time to speak with us this Autism Acceptance Week.
We hope he inspires you too to get out and do the things you enjoy!

Arriving at the airport and Departures - PART 2
❤❤❤❤
Is this up to date for 2023
Could I opt to be searched by a female if needed? As I've seen videos of how some of them frisk you. I'd much rather strip off, rather than being felt up by a male. As I'm going away soon, I'm going to make sure all clothes I wear contain zero metal, so doubtful I'd get searched, it's just incase I forget something due to being overwhelmed with stuff.
I have autism abd everything dcares me wbd airports are the eorse
I have autism and this video is really helpful to me and especially because I’ll be going to Istanbul in July and returning in September so I’ll rewatch this video when I get to this airport in 1/2 months time 6:53 I don’t really mind the lighting and smells and people in the tax & duty-free shopping area so I’ll just walk straight through to the departure lounge
Bit of interaction with Alan woulda been nice...otherwise awesome...Alan being Alan ❤
im so so anxiety about security
ρяσмσѕм 🎊
I recently went through a journey where OCS and Emirates both let me down as disabled traveller in the airport I couldn’t find the ocs desk so I went to the que at Emirates walking with a stick I was forced to stand and que no emirates staff or OCS staff offered help t So I had to struggle with my suitcase alone I definitely won’t travel through Birmingham airport again after this experience which sent my Anxiety through the roof hence the airline refused me for flight with no support even though I had booked Asistance with Emirates which I never got I was abandoned and told I cannot fly today with no help. Now a week later I have Covid which I believe I got from the airport due to nobody keeping and social distance.
I have autism and I don’t like the planes with loads noise Andy I normally scream very very loud because I hate loud planes
Well , this problem is more or less solved for now. Just don’t fly 😝😝
A fantastic interview

I wish people in positions of power would better understand that just because we've lived decades, have careers, have families, and ... make eye contact ... would understand that all those outward successes does not mean we don't need and benefit from information, support, and community.
A fantastic, amusing, informative insight. Everybody is different in one way or another. Everybody needs an Alan Gardner in their life.
Great interview 👍😊
Really loved this presentation and his perspective - especially the generalization to 'people' and how most things work with ANYONE. The hands-on suggested support strategies were great - respectful, accepting, and caring yet scientifically supported. Would love to see videos of this good practice in action to learn much more.
Birmingham Airport isn't to blame but the trend where every airport now is designed for you to be forced through duty free. Shame we all can't by pass through the special door, those of us who have no care in buying duty free. It's like an assault course.
The days before coronavirus was so stressful krona virus is actually a blessing
Dr. Odin has done it again for me and my family. My son who has Autism was cured totally after 14 days after he finished taking the herbal cure medicines which Doctor Odin has prepared for him. I never believed there is cure for Autism and never believed herbs can cure it. Today am a living testimonies and witness and I can boldly stand anyway and testify about the marvelous work of Doctor Odin. People are out there discriminating all the traditional doctors and saying there is no cure for Autism. In life, whatever drodintemple3523@gmail.com or whatsap +393511788587 are doing, you have to apply faith and focus on what you are getting in return. Write her on her email and wait for her response, Dr drodintemple3523@gmail.com or whatsap +393511788587,thanks for taking your time to read everything...

a very good video my grandson aged 7 has autism and very unsure about flying but watching this video it has reasured him and said it was one of the best videos he has seen
Hi I got autism to nervous flying not been on a plane since I was a kid this video helped me
Yeah it helped me too!
We weren’t sure if we were going this year, hopefully we are going this Thursday Edit: Saturday
Wow! I don't have autism but this is a fantastic video! Seriously! Who knew? It is extremely important that people with autism do have a video explaining processes simply and easily since travelling by air (particularly nowadays) can be very stressful for people who don't even have autism - which begs the question "WHY IS IT MORE HELPFUL TO VIEW A VIDEO RECORDED FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE AUTISM"? Basically, because it isn't rushed and goes through the process of all the stressful things that you have to pass through before you get on a flight and even includes the process of arriving back at Birmingham International. Believe it or not, you don't need to have autism to find that you feel extremely stressed and anxious and confused at an airport. It would be helpful if all airports around the world recorded videos similar to this video for autistic passengers for ALL PASSENGERS. Quite frankly, unless you travel regularly, any type of travel (not necessarily by air) can be very stressful and every airport is different rather than the same. Quelle surprise!
Well actually, do you think you might be autistic yourself? Most people would not find it that strsssful or confusing. I’ve been to many airports. The only one I found stressful was Frankfurt and that was due to a short transfer time Most people will simply ask for help and directions but autistic people are paralysed with shyness and really find it difficult to interact with people. But I agree the video is very useful. You will find many UA-camrs actually do videos of airports explaining the checking in and out process. You can also go online and check the maps . My biggest tip would be that Any stress is removed by arriving 3 hours before departure . I always do this I really don’t mind sitting at the airports I actually enjoy it. I get myself a lounge pass , or if not just watch the planes go by. If it isn’t possible to arrive 3 hours before always arrive at least 2 hours before last check in as you never know how long the security check in lines will be ! I cannot tell you how many times this has saved me from missing my flight or being stressed.
Whilst I wont be needing OCS staff, I'm flying long haul on my own next week (bricking it..) and this walkthru has proved invaluable to me. Thanks for posting.
Thx for this vid and I am nervous to go there!!!! I love west midlands

Once you are in the Airport it is pretty straightforward.
AWM is amazing they have supported us so much with fighting to get a diagnosis for our son who was diagnosed fully 2 weeks ago with ASD. Fantastic video and the song made me cry xx
AWM are beautiful people. My mum used to work there but unfortunately left in 2014
Liars about checking at the assistance desk told me to check myself in
ive been calling the help desk for 2 days never answer
this is such a fantastic tool for kids with conditions or just anxiety of new situations...well-done for making life easier
My heart is so warm watching this, knowing that it could help so many. I don't have Autism but having not used an airport as an adult independently before (flown as a kid lots of times) I kinda have a better idea now.
This presentation has been very helpful as I deal with challenging behaviour from my a family member. Highly recommended
