It was Paul Stanley that would smash the marauders not Ace…

They absolutely are thinner. Tributes also had thinner backs.

Great video guys. I remember the balsa wood being used in some of the 94 models. I made a ton of Studios and Classics back in 93 - 94. I always heard from players though it dulled the sustain. Idk. What do you think?

I never "gig-tested" one of the Studio or Custom Lites, but I did get to gig-test a protoype Les Paul that had an insane figured Redwood top. It was stunning, but the wood was so soft that it killed the attack. The beginning of each note had no snap to it. it was like a rubber band. I can see how balsa wood would have had a similar effect.

If these guys can’t remember anything, just ask Joe Bonamassa… he’ll tell them what they ate for lunch in 1976 and who supplied the toilet paper in the bathroom.😂🤣🤷🏼‍♂️

I’ve got a 1970 white LP Custom. It’s a pancake body with volute. It weighs just over 9lbs and it’s a fantastic guitar.😊

I knew a few people there, but I was often so busy I didn't have much time to socialize with anyone. I was by myself for 10 months in solid bodies while the crew went to training. I wrote an email describing some of my experiences from November 93 till August 94. I can't remember the fella's name that was in charge of solid body machining when I got there. I remember one younger guy whose name was Troy but the others I'm still in the dark. I only worked with them a few weeks before they left and a couple weeks after they got back. I think the engineer was named Matt and he came from England? It's been 30+ years. I do remember New Years Day 1994 because Henry woke me up in the parking lot. That was rough. I partied with Johnny Neal the night before and my head was hurting like Hell. Henry told me I had to show up that morning to make one guitar. The first guitar of the Centennial year that ended up in a case at the employee entrance. I had hoped it would be a cool guitar like a 57 Black Beauty, but Henry wanted a Les Paul double cut. I thought that and the Nighthawks were the ugliest guitars they had me make. But what did I know, I was a machinist, not a guitar player. I always wondered what happened to that guitar. It was black and I signed it in gold along with everyone else. When they had me sign it, it had no signatures on it and I slapped my John Hancock on it and they said whoa everyone else is going to be signing this too. Not my problem. I already signed it. I met a lot of bands while working there and everyone was cool but I almost got fired for telling Ted Nugent to get away from the machine when he came through because it was running wide open and he stepped around the safety shield which could have gotten him killed. I had to do an emergency shutdown and I told him he was stupid for doing that. Henry didn't like that but I felt it was my responsibility since I knew the danger he was putting himself in. I met BB King and got his autograph on one of the pick guards and helped Chris Robinson up off the floor when he fell face first stoned or drunk out of his gord, maybe both, idk...

Best guitar I had was my 79 custom in natural finish with maple fretboard. It cost $729.00 with case new in 79 . Wonderful low action and slim neck profile . It was a flawless guitar manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan per the serial number . Sold it in 2003 huge mistake . I can tell you the new early 90's Customs I tried at the local shop were not as good . The necks were fairly fat and the actions were high . They played terrible . I replaced my custom with a 2001 Black 68 reissue . Nice playing custom but not as good as that 79 .

I have the same guitar but a '78. Sounds great but weighs a ton, and the low frets aren't my favorite. Probably going to be up on Reverb before long as it just sits in it's case lately.

In the late 70s I was a young kid. My neighbor friend's father worked for an advertising firm in Chicago. He did advertising artwork and design for Gibson for several years during the Norlin era. He designed and did artwork on Gibson "swag". He would regularly bring us kids things like t-shirts, beach towels, playing cards, zippos, stocking hats, baseball caps, bumper stickers, posters, belt buckles, medallions, you name it. I think most of these items were test runs, most of which never made it to the production stage. Unfortunately, I was too young to realize how rare and valuable these things would/could become. The only piece I still have is a pewter medallion. It came on a cheap silver necklace, which broke and went missing decades ago. The medallion had a sunrise Gibson logo on the front and the back side said Guitars of quality, prestige, and innovation. It hangs on the end of a pull chain on my studio ceiling fan. It's one of my most prized possessions. Has anyone ever seen one of these? I did a couple internet searches years ago. Nothing. I've never seen another one of these medallions. A few yrs ago I saw one of the belt buckles on ebay.

I seem to have evaded the Norlin era having bought my first Les Paul Standard in 1986 and inherited my dads 68 Goldtop. I have played some Norlin era Les Pauls but they were OK.
