Premium Atlantic Jazz Reissue Series Most Jazz Collectors Don't Know
In 2019, Warner Music Japan released a fantastic Premium Atlantic Jazz (and some Warner related labels) Reissue Series called - Jazz Analog Premium Collection Series -
Mr. Koki Haniwa who was responsible of the legendary Blue Note Premium Reissue Series by Disk Union produced this series caring every detail for restoring the original sleeve design, label design, fonts, colors and so on. They used the high quality heavy, thick paper for the sleeve beautifully laminated. As for the sound, they used the original MONO master using only analog process. Uniquely enough, the cutting was done at the Warner Music Mastering Lab in Japan and pressing was done at Optimal Media in Gernmany. Wow...I was blown away by the sound quality...especially with the bass sound, it is heavy and sounding! In case you happen to find any title in the series, I do recommend you to get it.

Wow...this sound is just crazy...of course, as I talked in the last video, the pressing quality of these mid 60's Blue Note issues is just fantastic. In addition, these STEREO copies sound is like fire, with over dynamic bass and high. I was just blown away, really... As you ...

Wow...surely sound is out of this world BUT...what I was amazed at also is the pressing quality. Even if the scratches are there, noise issue is not that distinct. The vinyl finishing, label printing, even the sleeve qua...
The Best Sounding Reissue of John Coltrane Giant Steps in Japan

To recap, Shinseido was one of the biggest music shops in Japan and they teamed up with major music companies to reissue jazz titles including this, John Coltrane Giant Steps. They picked up not only the popular titles like Giant Steps but many minor titles on minor jazz labels. They used high quality vinyl and for most o...

Wow...I got a bunch of titles, over 100 titles from The Last Jazz LP Collection Series by King Record just recently. I used to have some titles in the series from time to time but not over 100 titles at the same time. Not Known but Amazing Premium Like Verve Reissues by Polydor Japan

Polydor Japan has been reissuing Verve and Verve related jazz label titles over the decades and their quality is at the top. But this particular series they produced is not that known. They used the remastered tape from the US and used the half-spee...

I love your reviews, keep up the good work🥂
I am lucky enough to own a original stereo pressing of this album great sound and even greater performance
The UA BN pressings from the 70s are very good. With RVG stamp that is. Usually better than the japanese pressings that almost always lack low end and too much emphasis on the mids. It sometimes depends on the title and how many times they used the stampers. Best reissue sound on the Blue notes are the 1970 ones black/boxed blue label (west coast) and classic label 1971 with black printing on labels. They sound very close to the OG pressings. Thanks for a nice channel!
Yeah...if you put the price element here, it is true. Thaks for the great insight!
Great topic, Takashi! I recently heard Michael Fremer talking about this, and I agree with him: UK pressings from the '50s and '60s, and Japanese pressings from the '70s and '80s are the best sounding records I have ever heard. US '50s/'60s would be third place to those in my opinion. I agree, finding great-sounding US pressings from the '70s is totally hit-or-miss. It's not impossible though, and personally I'd rather buy a few copies of a '70s Blue Note for $50-75 trying to find a great sounding copy compared to paying $500+ for an original.
That makes sense! haha.
I have a few japanese pressings they are a different class, 180 gram vinyl doesnt mean you are going to get a flat record .The record companies pressed thinner in the 70s to get a better injection mould l bought a second hand uk pressing recently and it still holds up
I bought the Lp, I bought the compact disc. I will not buy it again. Sorry.
That is sad...you went to one of Shinseido?
Ohiao gosaimasu. Would be interesting to compare to the AP75th Atlantic series
My new copy of the Transformers G1 soundtrack came with an obi strip which I’ve never actually seen on an English language vinyl before, so that’s why I’m here haha
the VIJ series are really good. Lots of titles not originally covered by the SMJ series. But do not think as many VIJ series were pressed when compared to the number of SMJ pressings which are much easier to find.
Thank you! Are they all in Stereo or some Mono ?
Try the monos. Most of the monos have a large sound stage, sometimes better than the stereo releases.
Thankyou ! Can you tell me the year the 5 spot was recorded ?
In 1957, April 12 is the date recorded. Thank you!
@@JazzLoveJapan That was the original 5 Spot at 5 Cooper Sq NYC ! Thanks
The OBI really ruins the sleeves and makes it impossible to see the artwork properly. Completely pointless.
Thanks for your honest comment! I used to think like that. But Obi nowadays, to me looks great. Anyway, I respect your thought as well.
I love the obi it mean status, keep up the great research!
Thanks for sharing!
Hello, nice video, I have the Kenny Clarke Klook's Clique from this series. Discogs says it's 1985 BTW. Excellent album. Also do you have any information on the sourcing of this series. Did they use original or at least copy tapes or was it sourced from digital as many 90's pressings are? Much Thanks, Reid in California
Thanks for your comment! The one you have I believe is from the mid 80's with white Obi. I don't know what kind of master they used but I believe is analog source.
Hello from the city of Boston, Massachusetts here in USA. I’ve watched a lot of your videos but never commented before. I enjoyed learning from this video and I’m glad you were able to spend time with your parents. I hope I can visit your beautiful country someday. I would be interested to know who your parents favorite musicians are. Keep up the great work. I wish you and your family health and happiness 🙏🏻 😊.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, if possible, try come here. The music my parents love...haha! I have not asked them but my mother used to love, a female legend singer called Hibari Misora. She was also singing jazz standard when she was young and great too.
I'm sure many foreigners after watching this video will flock to Toyoma!
If you love nature, that is the place to go. Thanks for your comment!
I am a record and CD collector, and I do not care for the OBI. Except in 1 case, when it had unique artwork. And receiving the single without the OBI made my day a little less great.
Apakah rekaman obi lebih baik dari yang tanpa obi
I agree with you and Mr. Fuji completely. This album is fantastic. Like you say, the energy of the performance is really, really palpable. One of my favourite jazz albums.
Good to hear that! Thanks for sharing!
The TBM recordings are top quality. I have about 15 recordings they all sound excellent!
Yes TBM was a heaven for young talented but not known jazz musicians in the 70's.
Great video. Very informative. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Night Lights is a beautiful album! One of my favorite “Night” time spins! I’ve only heard great things about this reissue!
Good to hear that! Thanks for sharing!
Aha, I see, you have L100A Century!
This surprised me because I at first assumed that because it was a Sonny Rollins album featuring a big band on one side and a small combo on the other, and Leonard Feather was the producer, it was "Sonny Rollins and the Big Brass," made in 1958 for the Metrojazz label (an imprint Feather created in partnership with MGM) and reissued on Verve as "Sonny Rollins Brass/Sonny Rollins Trio" once MGM bought Verve from its founder, Norman Granz, in 1961. It turned out to be a different album altogether, made for Period (a label usually associated with classical music, mostly recorded in Russia or elsewhere in Europe), and though the title is "Sonny Rollins Plays" Rollins isn't on the Thad Jones big-band side at all. And though the Rollins side was recorded the day after his Village Vanguard live recording (for which he brought in bassist Donald Bailey and drummer Pete LaRoca, only to fire them midway through the date and replace them with Wilbur Ware and Elvin Jones, two years before John Coltrane also fired LaRoca and replaced him with Jones), none of the musicians on either version of Rollins' band at the Vanguard appeared here. Instead Rollins' sidemen were Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, Gil Coggins on piano, Wendell Marshall (a veteran of Duke Ellington's band) on bass and Kenny Dennis on drums.
One of my favorite Obi's is the original Steely Dan "Aja" due to how well it blends with the cover art, and how it matches with the album title font. Some others I really like are the original Steely Dan's "Gaucho", Eagles "Hotel California", Boz Scaggs "Silk Degrees", Masayoshi Takanaka "All of Me", and the Blue Note Masterpiece Special Replica 15 series manufactured by King Records in the early 80's.
My favourite obi is on my copy of the first pressing of Miles Davis' Pangaea, released by CBS/Sony in Japan in 1975. It is wide and full of colour with much dramatic Japanese script. Recorded at the very end of Miles' electric period - it's so heavy and dense!
Yeah! Obi, Jacket design, label design and insert, all are perfectly set. by the way that design was done by a legendary Japanese designer Tadanori Yokoo. Yokoo later claimed that he finished all the work in one day!
Toshiba Reissues have such great presentation with amazing printing, gorgeous jacket, and pressing quality was amazing! I do not know why my fellow American collectors bash on Japanese pressings. Original Pressings are great but they aren’t the only great sounding pressings!
Yes, originals are hard to come by and expensive...thank you for sharing!
Yes, these are superb! Some were repressed in early ‘90s also but with obi.
Yes, thank you for sharing!
I prefer these pressings to the US pressed UA "b" series. They sound very good and the pressing is much higher quality! Dan
Thank you for sharing!
The LondonJazz Collector stated in a well known blog that "Modern Toshiba (manufactured after 1994) are not the “legendary quality” of the pressings of its early years. From the mid-90s onwards solid-state equipment and digital production methods took their toll. " Your own video "Careful about these Blue Note Japanese Reissues!" also warns about these reissues (different series-same period). I purchased a large collection of unplayed 1993-9 (mostly 1994) Blue-Note Toshiba/EMI LPs. Here you extoll them as great. Two of three I listened to were excellent and one a little bright, all three had perfect and silent surfaces played in a high end system. Should I listen to each or just sell them as they were supposedly inferior quality and sound compared to the originals and 1970s/1980s Japanese pressings?
I just purchased 73 unused/mint Toshiba/EMI Blue Note jazz LPs dating from 1993 to 1999, mostly around 1994. I've read that they have diminished dynamics and less exciting than originals and the 70s & 80s Toshiba/EMI (Quote from LondonJazzCollector-From the mid-90s onwards solid-state equipment and digital production methods took their toll)." The first three I listened to, Tokyo Blues, The Three Sounds and Search for the New Land have flawless perfect silent pressings. The Tokyo Blues was excellent as was The Three Sounds. The Search for the New Land seemed slightly brighter than my several CD versions. Your prior video indicated that the 1990s era Toshiba/EMI are generally inferior sounding though. Should I keep them or sell them and stick to excellent CD versions (I have a high end system for both analog and digital). Thank you. (P.S. - I can't afford to buy only the original. mint condition Blue Notes in the U.S,).
I'm enjoying your videos. I've got around 250 Blue Notes and a portion of them are Japanese King pressings from this period - they always sound great!
Good to hear that! Thank you for sharing!
just had a listen very nice
Good to hear that! Thank you.
Thanks again for giving us your thoughts. I believe that the Wave Jazz Classics and most Japanese produced music is top notch. It might take a while for all of us to catch on, but once you have tried them, it is hard to go back! Cheers from Oz
Thank you!
I am a HUGE devotee of Sonny Clark. I actually have his name tattooed on my arm. That is how much I love him!❤
Many Prestige that read "electronically remastered" were actually remastered by Rudy Van Gelder in true mono, not stereo, and have "VAN GELDER" in the dead wax (not "RVG" like the original). Blue Note did a good job of only writing "STEREO" when it was true stereo and "Electronically Rechannelled for Stereo" when it was fake stereo.
Thanks for your honesty, always like your quick summations. Cheers from Oz
Thank you!
Please more content like this. Jazz is being Lost slowly over time. Its the original American musical art form
Thank you!
I've looked into this title before but the “electronically remastered” turned me off. Good to know this pressing sounds good. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I thought so too. But it sounds not STEREO, it is like MONO to me, really and has deep sound.
@@JazzLoveJapan Good to know. I'll keep my eye out for a copy. Thanks!
Mani would love to have it hopefully Craft will do something similar.
Acoustic Sounds just repressed some OJCs on heavy vinyl at RTI in early 2000s. They are from original ‘80s OJC stampers.
Thank you for your great info!
This box is an absolute gem. The sound is absolutely stunning! There is no better way to hear the Riverside recordings of Evans than this set. I believe that the individual VIJ releases from this period probably use the same stampers, but I can’t remember for certain. Maybe someone can confirm?
Nice update on this boxset. I appreciate the time you take to make these informational videos.
that is a great set. The Victor music version is better than the Fantasy US pressed version. Both are pretty tough to find. In addition to the Bill Evans and Miles box set, Victor Music Japan also issued the complete Riverside recordings of Thelonious Monk. Another tough set to find.
Blue Note will be releasing Watkins At Large, Byrd's Eye View and Byrd On Beacon Hill this year as part of the Tone Poet Series. These are all cut by Kevin Gray direct from the analog master tapes. All will come with the replica booklets. And, unlike the Disk Union versions, which were cut by Kevin Gray from 24/192 digital, the Tone Poet versions are cut direct from the original analog master tapes.
Thanks for explaining Takashi. Most people in the Western world don't know what these are for, but for some reason, they want them! Cheers
Hey Akashi, these are great videos- no frills just to the point and full respect for your honesty. Signed up for membership. Dig Jazz!
great video. to my knowledge, I don't think Victor Music ever issued the Blue Gene title. The only re-issues I am aware of on "Blue Gene" are the OJC pressing and the Acoustic Sounds 45 RPM 2 disc set. Both are really good sonically but the 45 RPM set is in another league sound quality wise.
Most regular OJCs from the 1980s were cut from the original master tapes using an all-analogue chain. The mastering engineer was Gary Hobish, who signed in the deadwax as “GH”. There has been confusion on the internet with people believing for a long time that “GH” was George Horn, but Gary Hobish himself came forward and said that it was him who did the mastering. The mistake has been corrected on sites like Discogs, but you might still find the wrong info from time to time. The confusion comes from the fact that Gary Hobish worked _AT_ the George Horn studio when doing these masterings, so it’s not entirely unconnected.
Wow, thank you so much for your knowledge. I have learned a new info now about Fantasy pressings!
You can read his comment on this Steve Hoffman thread: Original Jazz Classics (OJC) deadwax info - "...The "GH" that may appear in the deadwax of Fantasy OJC's up to 1986 is me, Gary Hobish. (I did most of the OJCs until then, at which point I left George Horn's Fantasy mastering staff and was replaced by Phil DeLancie). At that time, deadwax inscriptions by the M.E. at Fantasy were not commonly done. Additionally, to the best of my recollection to that time all OJC titles were cut from the original analog masters. (In addition to mastering, I was also the librarian of Fantasy's vault). Apr 23, 2020
