The Early Church Rejected Preterism: The Big Problem for Preterists
Preterism believes that much of what the Bible prophesies about the coming of Christ was fulfilled in AD 70. But what did early Christians believe about the second coming? In this video, we analyze the Didache, one of the earliest Christian documents we have outside of Scripture. We discuss the Didache's teachings about the end times and how this is significant evidence against the preterist position.

Preterism and Revelation 11: What Does the Temple Reveal?
Переглядів 1,3 тис.14 днів тому
Does the mention of the temple in Revelation 11 prove that the Book of Revelation was written before AD 70? Preterists often point to the temple as key evidence for their view, claiming it supports a pre-AD 70 dating of Revelation. In this video, we examine the four main interpretations of the temple in Revelation 11, explore what it reveals about the timing of the book, and evaluate whether th...

Did a Mean Innkeeper Turn Away Mary and Joseph?

When most people think of that first Christmas many years ago, they often picture a mean innkeeper turning Mary and Joseph away because there was no room at his inn. While this is a common part of the Christmas story, the evidence doesn't actually support the existence of an innkeeper-or even an inn at all. Why do We Capitalize English Pronouns When Referring to God? And Other Questions
The Church age never ends - Ephesians 3:21; Isaiah 9:7; Isaiah 65:15-24; 66:21-24; Revelation 14:6; 21:1, 24-27; 22:2,14-15,17. Please note in these passages sin, death, corpses, marriage and childbirth, and the church and the Gospel never cease to exist. That should not be possible if Christ is supposed to bodily return and bodily resurrect us after a New Heaven and New Earth is created. Heaven and earth represents both Herod's Temple, it is a microcosm of the real heaven and real earth where God meets man, and also the Mosaic Covenant - Deuteronomy 32:1; Isaiah 51:16; Matthew 5:17-18. 2 Peter 3:10 The Greek word used for elements is stoicheion it simply means rudiments of religion. It is also used in these following verses: Galatians 4:3,9; Colossians 2:8; Hebrews 5:12. Christians are convinced Christ is going to vaporize the whole earth with fire despite the fact He promised never again to destroy the human race: Genesis 8:21. But this isn't the only promise God gave in His word: Psalms 72:7,17; 78:69; 89:35-37; 93:1; 96:10; 104:5; 148:4-6; and Ecclesiastes 1:4. No, Peter was writing about the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple. The “day of the Lord” was an oft repeated occurrence in the Old Testament and never involved a physical appearance of Yahweh. However, what was visible was the utter devastation left by His judgment. With the New Testament anticipation of Jesus’ “Day of the Lord” we are told he would come in the “glory of the Father” (Matt. 16:27-28; Lk. 9:26; John 17:5). Jesus came invisibly in judgment just as his Father had, but that which was visible was the utter ruin of Israel, the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, the heart of the Jewish State (John 5:19-23). These events sealed the fulfillment of all prophecy and ushered in the fullness of the spiritual Kingdom of God. Please note the use of Hebraic apocalyptic hyperbolic language through-out and cloud reference in #2. 1. Yahweh used the Assyrians to Defeat Israel, 721 BC. Day of the LORD: “Woe to you that desire the day of the LORD!..[It] is darkness and not light…” Amos 5:18f Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “For behold the LORD is coming forth out of his place, and will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains will be molten under him and the valleys will be cleft like wax before the fire …” Micah 1:3-4 2. Yahweh used Sargon of Assyria to Defeat Egypt, circa 712 BC. Day of the LORD: “Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud and shall come to Egypt…” Isaiah 19:1 Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “…the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence, and the heart of the Egyptians will melt in its midst.” Is. 19:1 (see ch. 19-20) 3. Yahweh used Nebuchadnezzar to Defeat Pharaoh at Carchemish, 605 BC. Day of the LORD: “…Day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance…” Jer. 46:10 Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “For they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as wood cutters. They shall cut down her forest, says Yahweh, though it can't be searched; because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.” Jer. 46:22-23 4. Yahweh used the Babylonians to Defeat Jerusalem, 586 BC. Day of the LORD: “For thus says the LORD, “The whole land shall be a desolation.” Jer. 4:27 Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “…the heavens had no light, the mountains were quaking and all the hills moved back and forth…there was no man, and all the birds of the sky had fled…the earth shall mourn and the heavens above be black…" Jer. 4:23-29 5. Yahweh used the Babylonians to Defeat Edom, 583 BC. Day of the LORD: “For the LORD has a day of vengeance…” Is. 34:8 Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “All the host of sky shall be dissolved, and the sky shall roll up like a scroll. All their hosts shall fall…the Lord has a sword. It is sated with blood, it is gorged with fat….Its streams will be turned into pitch, its dust into sulfur, and its land will become burning pitch.” Isaiah 34:4,5,9 6. Yahweh used the Medes to Defeat Babylon, 539 BC. Day of the LORD: “Behold the day the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger to make the earth a desolation." Isaiah 13:9 Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “…The stars of the sky and its constellations will not give their light. The sun will be darkened in its going forth, and the moon will not cause its light to shine. I will make people more rare than fine gold… Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place in the wrath of Yahweh of Armies, and in the day of his fierce anger…” Isaiah 13:10-13 7. The Son of Man used the Romans to Defeat Israel AD 67-70. Day of the LORD: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night…you* are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief.” I These. 5:2-4. (see also I Cor. 1:8) Figurative Hyperbolic Description: “The sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from the heaven, … they shall see the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of the heaven, with power and much glory….” Matt. 24:29f * Paul was writing to first century believers (circa AD 52) some of whom would witness this event. Note: Day of the Lord=Coming of the Lord=Coming of the Son of Man= coming in clouds=the day of Christ=the second coming=that day One of the strongest examples that the Day of the Lord entails a judgment upon a nation and not a cosmic ending catastrophic event is found in the whole chapter of Ezekiel 13, it is found in verse 5. Compare this with Joel 2:28-32 (Acts 2:16-17; Romans 11:5; Hebrews 1:1-2, 9:26) In fact, Daniel 12:1-3,6-7 provides us the time of the resurrection its in verse 7.

We're listening! Let us know what is problematic with what was said.
@@thebiblesojourner is God, the author of confusion? Dispensationalism is literally that. Something conjured up to help your presupposition. my problem is your theology, Makes Jesus a liar.
@@thebiblesojournerI apologize for being rude. I was told the way i am starting to understand scripture was dangerous and heretical the last time i asked questions. I used to believe exactly what you teach. But i never stop trying to gain a better understanding of the bible. constantly praying and asking God to reveal his truth. I'm not saying i have it all figured out. That being said i think pre-millennial dispensationalism is easily refuted. My problem when i was new to Christianity, i was letting teachers and pastors lead me to believe what they believed. Always reading the Bible with pre-suppositions.
@ No problems at all! I'm thankful for your attitude and humility that you've expressed. We may disagree, but we can certainly have some profitable conversations and discussions. I often find the main issue regarding dispensationalism (and premillennialism in general) revolves around one's presuppositions about how the text has meaning. If the biblical text is read in light of the human author's intent, then one would naturally arrive at premillennial theology. Do you think that's a correct assessment? Or where do you think the main presupposition is?
seminary education at it's finest 🤦♂️
Thankful for the opportunity to learn Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic! Where did you learn the original languages if not seminary?
@ What does that matter when you have to use all your hermeneutical gymnastics to make things fit your presuppositions. The idea that you have to be fluent in Hebrew and Greek to understand, the Bible just isn't true. Leave all interpretation to the "educated" Because us peons are too stupid to understand?
The laws, statutes , and judgments written in Exodus,Leviticus,Numbers and Deuteronomy are still in effect today. Matthew 5:17 “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” This is our Lord and Savior setting up his government for his people Israel. Nowhere does the bible reference Israel as a place. The reference is only to the people God named Israel thru Jacob his chosen people. The person Trump picked for Secretary of Treasury is a homosexual. Bio Scott Kenneth Homer Bessent /ˈbɛsənt/ BESS-ənt; born August 1962) is an American investor and hedge fund manager. Leviticus 26:21 “And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.” 1 Samuel 12:22 “For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.” 1 Kings 6:13 “And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not forsake my people Israel.” Israel is not a place. Israel is a people. Sh! We built the Cathedrals of Europe. The letters written in the New Testament, were written to the twelve tribes abroad.
I like your thought here. Also, something else occurred to me while listening: "One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple." Might this have bearing on the subject?
I remember in Junior High School (Yes, Middle School was called that at one time!) a teacher giving us students a test at the beginning of class and told us 'just once' that we needed to read all the directions/instructions before proceeding with the test. The directions/instructions were a couple of paragraphs long and the test was only 10 - 15 questions total, the first one or two being quite easy, so probably two-thirds of the class skipped the directions/instructions and proceeded with the questions. After few fairly easy ones, one of the questions had us stand by our desk and shout something silly out loud before proceeding to the next question. Out of the 10 - 15 questions a few of the questions had students do very silly things out loud and/or in front of the class while the other questions were fairly benign. However, the students that read to the end of the directions/instructions also read that we were to 'disregard' all previous directions/instructions, place our names at the top of the sheet, and go immediately to the last question, which essentially told us to look at what the others were doing, but not to interfere. Now, applying that to Dispensational versus Non-Dispensational systems, those who would take the teachers words and act faithfully upon them would (and did) end the test within 10 seconds after completely reading the directions/instructions. Those who disregarded the literalness of the teacher's instructions went through all the questions and at the end of the test felt very embarassed indeed when they learned that they had been fooled. Maybe the Non-Dispensational Hermeneutic folks will feel embarassed after death/rapture as they learn that they didn't "frontload" their Bible reading and understanding by simply following the rules laid out by our Teacher!
New Tribes Mission is now Ethnos360. I attended and graduated from their Bible Institute in Waukesha, WI several decades ago. The Lord led me elsewhere for service; there was no issue with NTM/Ethnos360.
As a full preterist I thank God I don't have to argue too and fro as you do. Jesus Christ and the apostles taught that He would return before that generation passed. You seem to ignore this fact. The early date of Revelation is confirmation that it would soon take place..... simple.
to and fro
There is no future temple as Heb 10v25-26 tells us that if you sin by rejecting our gathering in Christ, the heavenly temple, there remains no sacrifice for you. If there is no sacrifice outside of Christ then there is no temple after Christ as the temple is a house of sacrifice according to Solomon 2 Chro 7v12. Not only that, the temple is also sanctified by sacrifice 1 Kings 8v63. Since there is no sacrifice outside of Christ a physical temple is impossible. BTW Christ is the third temple. We are IN Christ, IN the Lord, IN jesus are statements found all over the NT. We are in him because he is our temple.
People have been getting saved for hundreds of years based on those translations, yet here this guy comes and says they haven't been translated right.
🤣 I mean, I was just saying one word could be better translated in one specific verse. What’s your take on Deuteronomy 4.29? Side with LSB/CSB or some of the others?
Great video! What’s interesting about Irenaeus is our generation is the *only one* to disagree with his account of the Apostle John being banished by Domitian. No early century witnesses questioned Irenaes until *1,600 years LATER* by Johann Wettstein in 1752. That means they all knew it was under Emperor Domitian so nobody contested it. This detail comes from Pastor Andy Woods whom has done extensive research on the dating of Revelation and the false teaching of Replacement Theology. Also What’s interesting about the seven churches in Rev 2-3 is Jesus chose them specifically because they represent unique problems that would characterize all churches at all times- even today we have a little of all of them. Maybe instead of representing different kinds of churches, they represent different kinds of Christians 🤔 Because there were much larger churches at that time He didn’t choose like the Church of Rome and the Church of Colossi.
One point in favor of a literal understanding of the 1,000 years for His Millennial Kingdom is that "One day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day" and (as those of us who hold to a young Creation believe), it has been almost 6,000 years (or almost 6 "Days") since the Beginning of Creation, so the final "1,000yr/1-Day" is the "Day of the Lord".
Rev must be pre AD70. 1. John addresses those IN the tribulation of which he (John) is a partner. Leading up to the catastrafic events of AD70 2. If post AD70, Rev would have included something of the events of AD70 as they are pivotal whether you are Preterist or not.
Ernest L Martin once wrote "The Bible does not teach monotheism but it does teach mono Yahwahism"
14:02 "...our theology must be exegetical before it can be systematic". AMEN!
A forgotten truth!
Who talks about Revelation being written in the reign of Domitian? Late dates advocates always lie about this so give me the quote of I know you won't, because you can't. I am sure you will quotes some guys who got their information from a mistranslation Irenaeus's work, but you won't Irenaeus or Clement of Alexandria claiming this. Irenaeus supports the early date and I can easy show it. In fact i have a short video coming out in couple weeks that does just that. People need to start actually reading the works late date advocates like to cite, they will be left wondering why they have been lied to.
Look at the first video in this series. That’s where I cite the sources. You are free to disagree with the sources but you can’t seriously argue there are no sources that list Domitian as the emperor when John wrote. I’ve actually never heard anyone argue that before so you would be the first 😃
@@thebiblesojourner Late-date advocates often misrepresent sources to support their claims. For example, they assert that Clement of Alexandria said John was banished under Domitian, but this is false. Here's what Clement wrote: "For when, on the tyrant's death, he returned to Ephesus from the isle of Patmos, he went away, being invited, to the contiguous territories of the nations, here to appoint bishops, there to set in order whole Churches, there to ordain such as were marked out by the Spirit." (Who is the Rich Man that Shall Be Saved? Section 42) Clement does not name Domitian. The word "tyrant" could just as easily refer to Nero. Unlike Domitian, Nero’s persecution of Christians is well-documented. Clement also believed inspiration ended under Nero: "For the teaching of our Lord at His advent, beginning with Augustus and Tiberius, was completed in the middle of the times of Tiberius. And that of the apostles, embracing the ministry of Paul, ends with Nero." (Miscellanies 7:17) Additionally, Clement affirmed that John wrote Revelation: "And although here upon earth he be not honoured with the chief seat, he will sit down on the four-and-twenty thrones, judging the people, as John says in the Apocalypse." (Miscellanies 6:13) These points show that Clement linked the apostolic age, including John’s writings, to Nero’s reign, not Domitian’s. The late-date argument depends heavily on Irenaeus, but even his statement is ambiguous and may refer to the vision being seen under Domitian, not Revelation’s composition. Not only is Irenaeus ambiguous at best, this it what he said earlier in that same work: "Such, then, being the state of the case, and this number being found in all the most approved and ancient copies, and those men who saw John face to face bearing their testimony to it, reason teaches us that the number of the name of the beast, according to the reckoning of the Greeks, will contain the number six hundred and sixty-six (666)." Against Heresies (Book 5, Chapter 30, Section 1) This also gets admitted by late date advocates who don’t want to try and explain how Irenaeus could have said the Revelation was seen not that long ago, after he said there were good and ancient copies. Furthermore, the evidence for widespread Christian persecution under Domitian is weak compared to the well-documented persecution under Nero, particularly after the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64. Clement does not support a Domitian exile or a late date for Revelation. Instead, his writings align with an early date during Nero's reign. The late-date argument is built on shaky ground and easily disproved. You won't find anyone saying John was exiled under Domitian, except some later then Irenaeus, and there source is the improper translation of Irenaeus 's work.
Appreciate the video! I'd love to have you on to address misconceptions about premillennialism. I roll with a mostly reformed crowd but love hearing how people approach these issues. 😊
There is a mistake in the authors building blocks of logic. And please do take this in the most constructive tone, because I thorougly align w the understanding of Israel that the creator of this YT Channel espouses. But as to the founding of the nation and its Christian roots, the interviewee overlooked that the document creating a more perfect union of the 13 colonies, adopted all the language of the charters/constitutions of those states by clear affirmation of US Const Art 6 Para 1. And that adopted language, was overwhelming and resoundingly clear. As I will show below: When we remember that US Const Art 6 Para 1 affirms that all prior engagements (constitutions, treatise, contracts et al) that the 13 colonies of the federation had consented to, were binding on the new contract called the US Constitution; then it becomes clear that the framers of the US were agreeing to accept in as part of itself, the very clear and distinct declarations of Christianity which the colonies had bound themselves to. The US Const is therefore not devoid of Christianity, no, far from it. Rather Christianity was so profoundly proclaimed by the 13 Colonies that the federal union assumed it went without saying (again, affirmed by US 6/1). Here is just one example, from South Carolina original Const Art 38: XXXVIII. That all persons and religious societies who acknowledge that there is one God, and a future state of rewards and punishments, and that God is publicly to be worshipped, shall be freely tolerated. The Christian Protestant religion shall be deemed, and is hereby constituted and declared to be, the established religion of this State. That all denominations of Christian Protestants in this State, demeaning themselves peaceably and faithfully, shall enjoy equal religious and civil privileges. To accomplish this desirable purpose without injury to the religious property of those societies of Christians which are by law already incorporated for the purpose of religious worship, and to put it fully into the power of every other society of Christian Protestants, either already formed or hereafter to be formed, to obtain the like incorporation, it is hereby constituted, appointed, and declared that the respective societies of the Church of England that are already formed in this State for the purpose of religious worship shall still continue incorporate and hold the religious property now in their possession. The poor shall be supported, and elections managed in the accustomed manner, until laws shall be provided to adjust those matters in the most equitable way.
What is didache? It's not the Bible!!!
Correct! So not valuable as inspired text of Scripture. Even so, it is helpful testimony as to what the early church believed.
Interestingly enough, it seems like the Septuagint translates it the same way you do.
Always great to get some help from the Greek!
Clear, concise teaching with no spin. I like it.
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching.
Peter meant the end of that age, not the end of the world.
What did Peter mean by saying the end of all things is at hand. If it really meant AT HAND, he must have lied to them if he believes what you do.
Everything in the Revelation is already written in the old covenant. That's how we understand prophecy and Revelation.
It would help to get a clear picture of eschatology if you would use the real Bible, the KJB.
I enjoy the kjv. It was my first Bible. I prefer to read Greek and Hebrew however.
It's not a reign of Christ on earth, it's the reign of saints WITH Christ on earth, which happened in the first century.
That doesn’t sound so glorious….
"where in the Bible is that taught" Daniel 12
Hello, He has "raised us up" to sit in heavenly places in Christ.
Psalms 147:19-20, Joel 2:27, Romans 9:1-5.
"For the Son of Man will come in His Father’s glory with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to what he has done. Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” Matthew 16:28 False teaching is the same as LYING or worse, calling JESUS a liar and then trying to twist scripture and reinterpret clearly written phrases to kick the can on fulfilled prophesy down the road.
Jesus didn’t return in 70AD, he returned on Pentecost. Acts 2:1-21 Day of Pentecost, the word Pentecost means 50 days after the Passover, Jesus returned and he has been here ever since then.) Colossians 1:27 To them God would make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (The Holy Spirit is Jesus.) John 16:16 After a short time you won’t see me. Then after another short time you will see me again. ( Acts 1:3 After Jesus arose from the dead he spent 40 days on earth, then he left in a cloud, but he came back in just 10 days or less.) When Jesus returned at Pentecost he was in spirit form, and we the believers became his body, the body of Christ, this is why we will be raptured out of here, because Jesus is going to leave earth, to go to get his body right before the start of the Tribulation, and he is not going to leave us alone here on earth without his spirit to guide us. This is when we will be Raptured up to meet Jesus in the clouds.
I am among the Plymouth Brethren and I certainly would not say that dispensationalism was invented by JND. Afterall, the word appears 4 times in the letters of Paul. Oikonomia is translated dispensation. We get the word economy from it. It very literally means "house management". A synonym would be "administration" just like the administration of Joe Biden which will end next week. 😁
it seems like both pre-trib and preterists are attracted to those positions because both of these positions offer an escape from the persecution of the anti-christ and the mark of the beast. Pre-trib says "we don't need to worry because we'll be raptured before the AC comes", preterists can say "we don't have to worry about it because it already happened and we just have to wait the final white throne judgement". The middle ground, which is in my assessment the correct view, pre-wrath. But people don't like it because it says we will have to face the mark of the beast and the tribulation, if we're alive at that time.
I think you are certainly correct that this is often a reason that some people hold their position. I do also know many preterists and pre-tribbers hold their position simply because they are convinced that is what Scripture teaches. So, not always an interpretation of "convenience"--but you are right, it does happen.
How di you get amill or postmill without partial preterism?
Interpreting many of the “preterist passages” as idealistic or allegorical. It doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s an option.
Act 1:9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. Act 1:10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Act 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Preterist cannot get past this section of scripture. Eye witnesses tell us exactly how He returns. He will descend from heaven with the clouds just as He ascended. Preterists have no such eye witnesses that describe this return. Peace, PTT
People should worry more about making out of this world than when it will happen.
Being obedient to the clear commands in Scripture should certainly be a priority.
Satan is not involved with the nations now. Christ is now King of the nations.
You should view my video on Satan as the god of this world. You might appreciate that.
The swine went headlong into the abyss.
Satan was bound by at the temptation in the wilderness. Jesus Christ and his disciples then spoiled his goods for 40 years He was then released, deceived the nations, 66-70 ad. the end came.
The early church can't reject something they clearly spoke of. Preterism is baked all over the place in the new testament. You have to jump through gymnastic hoops to make it say other things than what were intended. Might want to study preterism a bit more, especially in context with what the Bible says.
I'm always on the lookout for what others thing are the best resources. What do you suggest I read and study? Always looking to increase my understanding. But at this point, I've not really ever read a new understanding of preterism. Seems to be recycled arguments usually.
You know, full futurism denies Jesus as messiah and full preterism denies that he is the full savior of this world. All Christians are partial preterists in the general sense. It’s just a matter of finding the right degree of preterism. 😅
I would agree that the argument is weak which says the early church would have been preterist because that is the only way a person at that time would have read these texts. In my view, it’s not a matter of whether a reader was ancient, but how familiar they were with the Old Testament. The more Greek, the less likely they would understand Jesus’ teaching regarding the fall of the temple in AD 70 as both a confirmation sign that he was ruling in heaven (and really had resurrected) as well as a sign that he was coming again at the end of the kingdom age that the end of the temple had begun in full force. The thing that convinced me is Jesus says that not one stone would be left of that temple, and that this would happen in his generation. And it would happen to the disciples who were going to be persecuted during an era where they were still keeping sabbath and in Jerusalem. The only reason to resist this reading is because of the darkening of the sun passage and the coming on the clouds passage. But once one is familiar with the OT usage of Yahweh riding the clouds in judgment (without being seen with the eye, but with the prophetic understanding of what the events on earth signified) then these objections fall away. I understand wanting more confirmation for events in Revelation, but once the OT unlocks the Olivet discourse with Isaiah 13 and 19….And once Daniel 11:36-12:13 is seen to parallel the events of the Roman era in AD 66-70.5 and Daniel 9:26-27, then there is no real reason to turn back for the Olivet Discourse. The writers of the Didache could have been wrong, or it could have been written before AD 70. In my view, the first resurrection was bodily and it was for the martyred Apostles and for the OT prophets. They were taken from the grave to heaven direct. They are shining like lights (as Dan 12:3 says), leading us to the second resurrection. They will come with Christ at his return. It’s really not much different from us having been “left behind” in the Pretrib rapture view. It’s just that it’s everybody who survived AD 70 that’s been left, and it’s been a couple thousand years for the great commission to be completed and Israel to get their act together. Then Jesus will return at the end of the current kingdom era to begin the eternal kingdom when death shall be no more (1 Cor. 15:25). The early gentile church can’t be expected to have understood 100% what is so easy to misunderstand. But I get it, eschatology is the final interpretive difficulty. It requires both good systematic theology and good history. It’s the final mystery. It’s not supposed to be easy, but God remains faithful. That is our hope.
Always appreciate your thoughts! I actually have a video coming out in a week or two on that section of the Olivet discourse. Would love your take on that too. The only issue that I am not sure exactly what to do with is the slow inclusion of Gentiles into the church. It seems that since Jews were the majority of the church during the formidable time of the church, wouldn't Gentiles be instructed and discipled by their Jewish mentors on the connections? That's a tough one for me, because I'm not exactly sure. It does look like the early church did have some continuity with the hermeneutics of the apostles in the Antiochene school. So perhaps that did get impressed on the Gentile hearers sometimes? Good thoughts.
I appreciate the approach. I would possibly argue why does it have to be an either-or situation. We have a number of examples in scripture where Jesus tells the hearer that HE will come on them if they don't do something. One example is the book of Revelation where the local church is told that if they do not do the works of the Lord, He will come on them. This being a judgement position. Is it possible that the coming of the Lord in Matthew 24 is not the same as the coming of the Lord in Thessalonians? I believe the problem is we see all these coming as a single event and try to place them in the same box.
Well that’s a very good point. We do get in trouble sometimes when we assume passages are talking about the same thing. Point well made.
Don’t say bishop. Say overseer. Better say elder because oversight is part of the work that an elder does along with pastoral and teaching work.
The Bible uses all three: overseer, elder, and pastor. I view them as all interchangeable, but I certainly prefer overseer to bishop (simply because the connotations in other denominations).
@@thebiblesojourner, my go to passage for a succinct definition of assembly leadership is in Acts 20 where Paul calls the "elders" of Ephesus to him in Miletus and he tells them to "shepherd" the flock of God over which the Holy Spirit has made them "overseers". All three in one.
It is only recently that we can see things happen on the other side of the world in real time... Preterism is the STUPIDEST eschatology theory of all of them... the RCC adopted it perhaps they knew they were the WHORE of BABYLON or perhaps they thought they would be accused of it, the destruction of Jerusalem is a blip on the radar of world events, the true ending of this world as we know it will be far reaching and felt on every continent and not just the mediteranian.
have you heard about this new group of preterist, the "satan's little season" people? They have to say that revelation was written before 70 AD as well. They say that everything in revelation happened, the wrath of God was poured out, the 1000 year reign of Christ happened as the Byzantine empire which lasted for 1000 years, and now we are living in "satan's little season" where Satan was loosed from the bottomless pit after the 1000 year reign. Also, they say the resurrected saints are now in the "camp of the saints" somewhere in the North pole. Given that they say that history was completely falsified, how do you debunk this position when they can simply say everything was a lie?
Is this a real thing? I have not heard of it. But if it is as you say, then it is likely impossible to reason with this position.
I may be a little slow but i dont see how if u bekeieve rhay we r in satans short season how that takes away from looking forward to christ coming cause theres gonna be a day for final judgement and when the new heaven and new earrh will arrive.
I might be misunderstanding the question but I think saying Jesus already came in 70 AD and can’t return for hundreds of thousands of years is what detracts from looking ahead to Christs return.
I love your videos! Keep it up!
Really appreciate the encouragement! Blessings to you!
That is not true at all. A simple google search will show that Origen, Clement of Alexandra, Tertullian, Julius Africanus, Eusebius, Athanasius, Augustine, and Cyril of Alexandra, among others all believed in the fulfilment of Daniel's 70 weeks, Matthew 24, and most of Revelation in the events of 70AD. Irenaeus and Hypollytus were the only two that believed in a still future fulfilment of Daniel, and their views were strongly rejected by Jerome. The aforementioned fathers did believe that the events of 70AD were the fulfilment of those scriptures, and they did still await the return of Jesus in accordance with the creeds that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead.
The eschatological views of the early Church Fathers were complex. While some, such as Eusebius, Augustine, and others, did interpret certain events-like the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70-as a fulfillment of prophecies in Daniel, Matthew 24, or Revelation, they did not necessarily hold uniformly “preterist” perspectives in the modern sense. Furthermore, their writings often blend partial fulfillments with an expectation of a future, final judgment and return of Christ, consistent with the creeds. The modern interpretation that ALL of Matthew 24 was fulfilled in AD 70 was essentially unheard of in the early church. Moreover, the claim that only Irenaeus and Hippolytus believed in a still future fulfillment of Daniel, or that Jerome “strongly rejected” their views, is simply wrong.
@@thebiblesojourner Exactly! While I agree that FP is wrong, I do believe that these early church fathers were correct to apply the events of 70AD to Daniel's 70 weeks, Matthew 24, and Revelation. This is something that premillennialists refuse to accept. Further, these early fathers held to an amillennial view that adheres to the creeds that Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead. However, concerning your comment about Jerome: St. Jerome specifically pointed out in his Commentaries In Daniel that the number of years in their system did not coincide with the historical events they purported to cover. He wrote, “If by any chance those of future generations should not see these predictions of his (Irenaeus) fulfilled at the time he (Irenaeus) set, then they will be forced to seek for some other solution and to convict the teacher himself (Irenaeus) of erroneous interpretation”. That is a pretty strong rebuke.
The problem Achilles heal for preterism is there had already been a precedent in Scripture for promises made that were very near yet went unfulfilled. What were they out of Egypt, an hour's walk from Jericho, the PROMISED Land? And yet, just like in Acts, due to lack of faith, only the tiny two, Caleb and Joshua, are allowed entrance. Not even Moses. The rest made to wander how many years in the wilderness till death did they part? The same number as that between His death and the destruction of their temple: 40. Abraham was promised all this land. He never saw it and his descendants had to go through 400 years of slavery first, and then most weren't allowed entrance. He had performed enough miracles that they SHOULD have believed He was their Messiah. The promises He the Baptist and His disciples made were CONDITIONAL promises. Somewhat akin to the distinction between God's will and His intention. He willed that Pharoah let His people go but He had a hidden secret intention: to glorify Himself. Thus did God harden Pharoah's heart. Similarly, He intends that all EVENTUALLY come to a realization of the truth. In the meantime, however,....From then on He spoke to them only in parables so they would NOT understand. God simply had has other plans. Secret ones, hidden. Therefore they could NOT believe, John 12:39. A big clue lies in the meaning of the name Paul: PAUse. The Jews have been put on hold for some 2000 years now. For God to demonstrate His love, His transcedent grace, for other nations.
