    @izzybelleXD Gifted and talented is a commonly used term in education. The fact is, the majority of kids aren't gifted and talented in that sense. It's important to identify G and T kids, so they can be challenged and extended as much as their classmates. Recognising the special needs of any student isn't degrading to their peers, it's a necessary part of quality education.

    In NSW public schools teachers use a wide range of strategies. Home-readers allow parents to share time with their child while reinforcing the learning that takes place in class. These videos include several strategies, from using the pictures for finding context and learning a vocabulary of sight words to sounding out. Different methods work for different children, and sounding out can be very helpful when, even as adults, we come across complex and unfamiliar words. VickyN@School A to Z

    I don't think this is all based on contemporary research. Sounding out is only used rarely by effective readers. Why would you encourage sounding out in our young readers when only 50% of English in phonetically decodable?
